I got one of these on eBay in 2013 for £120 including delivery. One of the best buys of my life. Stuck in an SSD a couple of years ago, and I still use it daily in 2019.
@@weetabixharry im using mine right now too, it works so great on alot of games that i was impressed that i even started like installing new systems on my own and i learned the laptop and know almost all its features plus people in my family are like wow that laptop has such good specs i like it alot but yeah for any new laptop users its a great choice its my first ever laptop so i recommend
I use an x220 with an SSD as a server for my home network, it runs Ubuntu with virtual machines, domoticz, and a small Minecraft server for my son. It has build-in UPS because of the battery and it runs with very little power consumption. All I have changed is the SSD and used 1 USB port to power a large silent fan that sits underneath the slightly raised x220 to cool it from the bottom the give the laptops own fans a little less work. It's a great little low powered server with its mobile i7 CPU.
stop charging at 90%(you can do this in Lenovo Energy Manager) and those batteries last forever. It´s the high voltage charging between 90% and 100% that kills them.
Just got this for 250$ in a local market in super mint condition, 128GB Samsung SSD, 8GB RAM and 9 cell battery that still holds for 8 Hours Online. Upgraded with 16GB RAM, 250GB Samsung Evo 850 Msata SSD, 1TB SSHD, add the UltraBase Dock for More 1TB SSHD in ultrabay with caddy, and this is my perfect mobile companion... still hunt for the IPS screen for much better display and viewing angle... Last best X series from ThinkPad with the everlasting classic 7 row keyboard...:)
Very nice, I was also looking at the Ultrabase dock to do some hot swapping between additional storage and an optical drive, but one was not available in my area and the one I ordered didn't show up so I went with the USB 3.0 base. Fun little machines to kick around the house with, even do some solid work. Not sure if it will replace anything I use daily for work, but we will see. Let me know how it goes with you!
sure man, yeah i also use the Docking mini dock series 3 type 4337 and works perfectly, only to extend the audio and display when im in my work place. one of famous thinkpad's seller in my country sell the ultrabase only for 25$ USD, not include the shipping thou LOL. and could be expensive to your country. well, im still waiting my IPS screen from aliexpress, hopefully the lcd is as good as their ads.
After a few upgrades I absolutely love my x220i. Its has an i3, 8GB RAM, 128GB mSATA drive, Intel Centrino advanced N 6205 Wi-Fi card and Bluetooth 4.0 daughter card. I find this to be the best setup for my needs. No webcam, vacant SATA port, the i3 is powerful enough for anything I throw at it.
@@LaptopRetrospective or the bigger brother of that, the 15.6" T520. Or the even bigger brother, the mobile workstation W520 (4 RAM slots (max 32GB) in a laptop and Nvidia Quadro graphics? why the heck not lol)
I came across the vid looking for reviews on x230 and x220s by people still using them in 2018. I kept one from a school I work at that was disposing of them. Last thing I'd like to do is swap the TN for an IPS, but it's a healthy i7, w/ SSD and 8GB RAM running Win 10 like a champ! Runs nearly as smooth as the x280 my job issued me (which is not modular at all sadly) -_-. I also did hit that subscribe button!!!
I'm looking into buying one of these (again). I already had an x220 a few years ago but now I'm craving one again. The keyboard is just too good. Looking for one with the IPS display and trying to get a new 44++ battery for it, too. Really looking forward to upgrading this thing again and making it the perfect travel companion!
You really helped a lot of people in this comment section, thanks for all the tips. I’m getting one in a few days and I’m a little worried about the exact condition
Glad I'm able to help. As for condition, scratches are one thing, damage is another. As I said to somebody else, there are enough of these out there that you don't want to settle with case damage. Scratches, beat up track pads and keyboards are easily and cheaply dealt with.
Laptop Retrospective so I just got mine, and I’m satisfied with the condition. But it won’t connect to the internet, it tells me “windows did not detect any networking hardware” what should I do
See my video on the channel on installing the Intel AC7260. You can also Google it and you can find the maintenance manual. support.lenovo.com/ca/en/videos/pd022685
The plastic brim at the end of the X220 lid breaks easily. In my experience this is a really easy to take apart laptop and you can get parts units for around $40. The tn panels are kinda terrible, so I would try to find one with an IPS display. I have a 6 cell and 9 cell 29 and they seem to be holding up fine, but I didn't know about the 44 plus series. Also there is a x220i which was a lower end, but identical model with an i3. There is also a whitelist on the X220 which prevents you from using certain aftermarket wifi cards, which can be an issue using a wwan card or even a better wifi card. This can be gotten around with fairly easily with a modified lenovo bios, though or coreboot, but that installation is a bit more challenging. Seriously though finding one with an ips is worth it, also all the panels are 1366x768 which isn't too bad, but can be a tad annoying and in my opinion feels cramped under windows. Also nice video though :D, sorry wall of text got distracted. Was about to plug in a gobi 2000 wwan into mine, but they shipped it to the wrong location :c
Agreed that the TN panel isn't great, but as we both know, very easy to service and change that. I didn't discuss the i series because the i3 is a bit low spec even for a Linux build. You are also correct about the BIOS swap, which has actually been done on this unit; also stops the RAM from being throttled as well. I found the installation very simple and straight forward; perhaps I should do a video on that... Glad you enjoyed the video and I enjoy reading a good comment; wall of text or not!
beep beep beep....... beep beep beeep...... blackscreen A video on the bios swap would be pretty cool. Parts of the process can be scary. Anyways, thanks for reading and good luck on future videos.
@@LaptopRetrospective Yes it kinda was. The T430s I got has dedicated Nvidia graphics. Overall better performer for base specs. But I still miss my X220 for its size and keyboard.
just got an x220 for 30+15 shipping. really rough and missing all the doors/ battery. I have all the stuff coming and already had an ssd for it though. going to repaste it soon but the temps are actually not bad as is. considering getting a new case for it
got one just like it for $90 at a hamfest. I'm sure mine is a TN panel, but it seems bright enough. The battery slide locks were broken and I had to tape the battery in place. I new battery half fixed this, on one side the lock was broken in the battery, on the other side it was the slide in the computer that was borked. PC card door flap was missing, and USB jack on right side is wonky (poor connection). Came with 8GB ram and a 160gb hd, I replaced the hd with a 250gb SSD, and added a 64gb micro sata SD boot disk. MB on mine is an I5, but the mobile I5 is a dual core with hyper threading, so Linux reports this as a 4 core (4 thread anyway). Not bad.
Nice, I haven't handled one of those yet personally. I know some people either love or hate the keyboard, but the ISP display would def be better than the TN panel. Any other major differences?
Thank you for contacting me. All of a sudden it started to work but because I haven't used it for five years I don't remember the pass code and I've tried everything 😭
Depends. I use my X220 every day around the house and it would be cheaper to buy than an X270. But if you need a daily driver it really depends on your needs and your budget.
@@LaptopRetrospective hehe I already have an x270 bro just wanted to hear which one you would prefer :)) I was considering the x220 to mess around with obscure Linux distros like Gentoo/arch/void etc. Should be a fun project. And I think the i5/i7 processor is strong enough to still catchup with modern websites and requirements. I already have an external OEM Thinkpad keyboard with the classic 7row design and trackpoint and it just feels amazing to type on..... Can't imagine having an actual LAPTOP with that keyboard...I might end up never using my x270 if I get an x220 :D
Best laptop I've ever had, got it in 2016, changed to SSD in 2019, put it up to 16gb last week and it works great. 46mp files running thru PS? No sweat!
@@LaptopRetrospective Thanks, it's got to be 12 years old now but it's built like a tank and never goes wrong, try finding a 12 year old HP going like a Lenovo 👍😉
How is the size of this laptop? Do you often find it to be too cramped? I'm thinking of getting a Fujitsu lifebook T901 for the larger size, but thinkpads are...thinkpads☺️
Thanks for letting me know. I use a surface pro 2 from time to time, and the 16:9 aspect ratio really bothers me. I've gotten used to 4:3 and 14 inches in my old Pentium M tablet PC, and I love the size of the screen, so that's why I thought about a larger device in the Fujitsu lifebook series. What do you recommend?
@@LaptopRetrospective Although I want the classic keyboard, I will most likely just wait for the T490's price to drop. (Edit) I'm also thinking about the T440p because it's the last CPU upgradable ThinkPad. However, school is coming and I don't want to lug around a T440p, so the X230, X220 and T490 are all very good choices in my opinion.
Stock speakers aren't that good. You can mod in some new ones or use headphones. Screen can be replaced with an IPS panel if the viewing angles bother you.
Thanks for the comment and the subscription. I still use my Pebble when I know I'm going to be in a rough place. I'm a little more confident in the durability and battery life. But the Ticwatch is every day wear currently.
If you're brave enough, you can buy the x220 keyboard then flash a custom x230 bios that will properly map the x220's keys to your x230. Plenty of vids and guides out there.
Like new is still used, many of these machines will still look new because of how tough that are built. As for price, that can be a regional thing. See how it compares with other models in your country.
Nice video, just what I was looking for. Subbed! Hopefully I can track down a decent one of these before the Libreboot exploit is completed and they shoot up in price to $1000.
Thanks wewd, glad you found it helpful, I have more videos coming on the X220 including how to test batteries (which you'll probably want to learn about if you are tracking one down) as well as doing an mSata SSD install which is a MUST for these units. Put's their boot time toe to toe with the modern guys. Cheers for the sub!
You are correct! the msata slot is only Sata II and does throttle the drive, but it is still faster than mechanical. The two bays offer many options. What I have enjoyed with another X220 build is using the 2.5-inch bay as a swap slot; so I can use it as a storage drive slot or I can swap it out for a drive that I have a Windows 7 install on if I need it. This trade off in boot speed makes up for it in versatility. Ultimately if speed the chief goal, you are right in your approach. The beauty of the X220 is we have the options for both. Only a handful of machines have both types of drives like the the XPS15 with the smaller battery but none have made them as accessible. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for a great video. I've had my X220 i7 with ssd for about 3 years. Just two things I wish were better, 1...the sound... I use a bluetooth speaker and 2 I wish it had backlit keyboard. Could one fit a T520 classic keyboard thats backlit? Thanks
@@LaptopRetrospective yes i know planning to buy new 9cell lenovo one but damn those are same price as laptop itself :c not sure which aftermarket ones are good i know that greencell is out of stock with those.
@@LaptopRetrospective why can't I get windows 10 to work? I made boot device via media creation tool and when I boot the screen stops at win logo and then starts blinking
I am restoring a x220i its pretty much the same as the x220 it just has the I3 processor picked it up for £45 uk pounds or $59 it needs a bit of cleaning and tidying up and needs some ram but i have a stick 8GB 1600 DDR3 ready to go in it but i will later unlock the 1.46 bios so i can get that to full speed and I know it never had one originally but i am going to put a 1tb drive as i will be using it for my blog writing because its actually faster than my 2015 HP laptop which is only 1.8GHZ the fingerprint reader is on the x220i
it is sadly, but there is a fair few restored ones that still sell for a fair bit because they are popular because people know that the build quality is pretty good.
For 2019, how much is it in your country online platform now? How much did you pay for if u ever did buy one in 2019 Please state ur country, platform and spec, price. Thanks!
@@LaptopRetrospective The SL-series was one step below the (already stripped down) R-series back then in the Core2 days, and when they killed the SL-series off in 2011 (SL410/SL510 being the last models) it basically morphed into the Edge/E-series (those crappy consumer grade Ideapads masquerading as Thinkpads). They were and essentially still are absolute bottom barrel versions of actual Thinkpads. Not that the current lineup of actual Thinkpads is any good either unfortunately :/ Lenovo has definitely lost its way and ruined most of the things that made Thinkpads great...
Thanks for this video! Found someone selling this online i7 (but I'm still confirming this. Asking if its usb 3.0) and I plan to use it for google chrome, working with lots of tabs (for research), MS Office, and Evernote. Will it handle that? I plan to use it for school stuff on the go but my biggest concern is the weight because I have back problems. How much does it weigh and can you give me a visual for comparison (ex. weighs as heavy as a 12 pack of soda, etc.)? Will maybe ask follow up questions. Thank you again for this informative video!
Hey there, I'll answer as many questions as I can, some might require images so you can drop me an email or hit me up on Twitter. Running the programs you listed will be no sweat and the weight is quite manageable. I'd suggest to save a little money for a new 9 cell battery as they rarely come with healthy batteries and that 9 cell gives you lots of juice. Let me get back to you on the cans of soda.
Hey, thanks for the quick response! Oh, the analogy doesn't have to be cans of soda - just something I can visualize as a comparison for the weight. No need to attach photos :)
So the laptop is about 1.5kg and the average soda can I have here is 386g so the laptop weighs 3.8 full soda cans. Keep in mind this is with the nice 9 cell battery.
Laptop Retrospective awesome thank you! That sounds very manageable to me weight wise. Are you familiar with the x201? I found another seller who's selling it and it comes with a stylus. Is the x201 modular as well?
@TechGeek: Laptops had externally-accessible batteries until Apple came-out with their "Macbook Air", and later, all laptop manufacturers started to copy them.
i just ordered a refurbished laptop the older x 220 , so would it be good for me to do documentation for home health and can i upgrade on the battery? and how much is a upgraded battery?
Hey April, I'm not sure what you mean by the home health, but you can easily swap out the batteries, please see my other video on batteries for the x220 here, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m_KFGB9Kiss.html as for price, they will vary quite a bit depending on the capacity. I'd suggest going with the 9 cell if you don't mind the extra weight and battery sticking out at the back. Just make sure the capacity is close to the 94mAh it should be. Let me know if you have any other questions I can answer!
Yes but u need at least 6gb ram and ssd. As windows 10 once in desktop mode, it will take 2gb, and open Google doc and youtube will easily eat up 1-2gb ram. Hence ssd and more than 4gb are needed.
Hey, I live in Mexico and it has been har to find a new battery for a t420. The 44++ thing was helpful, thanks. Also, if you know of any site that ships outside of the US that sells batteries let me know.
What if it says "70++", is it better than 44++ or what? I'm looking at this www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-45N1173-9-Cell-94Wh-Laptop-Battery-for-ThinkPad-T420-T520/362292971911?epid=1628830039&hash=item545a580987:g:JyYAAOSw7p1az77B
I have an i7 x220 I added an msata 256 gb ssd, 7200rpm HD 500gb?, and it’s got 12 gig ram. Sadly I opted for the crappy display when I ordered it from Lenovo. I still use it today as my main laptop. Battery is wank but that’s ok. I’m not buying a new as it’s too expensive in relation to the x220s value. Oh, and I cracked the plastic thing across the top of the screen using it at work. One of my students was pissing about with it. So it’s a bit wonky on the top right. Aside from that it does everything I need it to do.
Laptop Retrospective Yup, that’s why I love it. I’ve pulled it apart so many times and the service manual is freely available and so easy to follow. No need to pay anyone to work on it.
I want a small laptop to take to work and cafes but I don't want to spend more than around $250 (which is dirt cheap: computer hardware is much more expensive in UK than in US), especially if I have to buy a new HDD or other hardware. I have to rely on Internet for buying anything else than white goods and this being an old laptop, I am of course forced to buy a second-hand machine. The two main places are Amazon and Ebay (uk). Laptops that are certified refurbished* in Amazon go over my budget, so... Any tips how to buy this stuff online, espeically when there is only one generic photo? * Certified refurbished doesn't mean anything to me: my tablet never worked despite it was sent to the factory in China, THREE times during warranty period.
+Claptrap Claptrap Biggest thing is not to buy from a seller that one has one photo or you request additional photos. If they refuse the request, then you have a good example of the quality of customer service you can expect. Most of the time they will ask you what photos you'd like and you can make a decision based on what you see. I list the major damage areas in the video that would be good to photograph and then a picture of the bios screen and booted into the OS. Ultimately buyer beware so be confident that the person on the other side is worth dealing with if things don't go your way. Hope that helps, if you have more questions, post away.
Why would anyone get an X220 over an X230? The X230 has better performance, better battery, a better GPU, and they all have two USB 3.0 ports. Some people dislike the keyboard (I personally love it), but you can easily swap the X220 keyboard into an X230.
Price. I need a portable word processor and wireless email access. I'd plug a keyboard into my phone, but the screen is too small. Don't need usb 3.0, don't need GPU performance, etc. If I was willing to pay more to get more, I'd get a new Chromebook instead.
@@LaptopRetrospective touche. Well, I got a 230t tablet after all. Wasn't too much more, so... I'm eating my words. 🤭 Maybe someday I'll even reprogram the bios with coreboot! Although I'm enjoying it as is.
By the way when the online store says original battery, does it means a battery which was recently manufactured or it was a used original battery? I don't trust most of the seller since most were scams I am using x200 and wanted an all day no plug machine if you know what i mean
You might be chasing a ghost if you want an X200 to have an all day battery. Buyer beware; check their return policy and run your own tests on the battery to ensure once you get it the capacity is correct. Original battery usually means the one that shipped with the unit so don't expect a "like new" experience. A 9-cell would be the bear minimum if you want all day use and even then it depends on what you are doing with your computer. Hope that helps.
Laptop Retrospective It says : 1360x768 resolution Windows 7 to 10(64/32bit) Atleast 4GB RAM and extra disk space Is my laptop's specs enough for AutoCAD 2017?
Easily and more. If you need a machine for that, you'd be hard pressed to find a more dependable and affordable unit. Plus room to update and keep it competitive.
Hmm, I will put it on the list, that essentially involves tearing down the entire unit. Which I'm not opposed to, I just need to find the time to do it on film. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi Alto, So here is the situation; yes you can, but it really isn't worth your time. You can an external GPU adapted through the 1x PCIe lane in the Express card, but it's only Gen 2 meaning that most graphics cards will simply bottleneck and you can't get the performance you likely desire. You'd also need an external PSU and a few other components, so by the time you've spent all the money to put it together it's a bit of a loss. There are lots of projects online that can be found with a quick search but the bottlenecked performance is a real issue that you will have to face. Anything newer than a GTX 4xx will be throttled.
Laptop Retrospective Lenovo ThinkPad X220 (High Specs Professional Laptop) Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3230M CPU 2.60GHz 3rd Generation 8GB Ram DDR3 300 GB HDD. Is this a good spec? Actually i need it as a secondary laptop. Like for browsing Gaming. What you say about this?
I smell a rat, AFAIK, X220's never had 3230M CPU's.... X230 did though. shop.lenovo.com/ISS_Static/ww/wci/us/ww/pdf/X220_datasheet.pdf Also calling it a High Specs machine is a stretch. A HDD being 300GB exactly is also suspect. Buyer beware.
X230 is certainly good, but some prefer the older X220 keyboard and depending on where you are geographically, a surplus of one might be available over the other affecting price like in my case.
@@LaptopRetrospective What other advantages does X230 have besides better integrated graphics? Which keyboard is better? I have not touched both keyboards before.
I think I am getting the T430, since its the only one on my list sold with a 12 month warranty, comes with a free laptop bag. Replacing a Celeron IdeaPad which was new for around 170 usd, but its slow and throttling, and I want to join TPMR.
+Gaming Unlimited sorry? What pen? If you are talking about the X220t those are the touch screen models with the rotating screen. Those include the pen unless it has been lost.
Sure can, most distros work, just create a bootable USB drive or use an external DVD drive. I run Mint on mine very well; even the Thinkpad function keys work (don't really work under Win10). What distro were you looking at?
Unfortunately, X230's are a bit rare in this area and I don't have spare funds to go out and buy a laptop just for a video. The only ones I can feature are the machines I own or I am asked to repair. Perhaps one day. Glad you enjoyed the video!
For that price, you could also get a new battery. If you are confident that the shop doing the work won't break the casing or board then I'd say ok, but even then, recelling has its risks.
My apologies, your sentence as written implied that was the cost of the battery, not the cost of the laptop. Rebuild services around here are comparable to new aftermarket options, with few companies offering the service in my area. That being said, I might try to get that one pack that won't charge rebuilt and I will post a video if I do it and the results.
Finger print readers were somewhat rare as many people didn't order them with the X220 as they were a business class laptop and I think a lot of businesses saw it as an extra and unnecessary cost. They are neat to have but I don't plan on going out of my way to track one down. Just more of a nice addition.
Laptop Retrospective i really apreciate the video cus i think my laptop has been droped and i cant take out the bateri and i have been using this shit in almost a year. The reason i say shit is cus i nearly works a quarter of what is should.
Sounds like the battery was put in improperly, getting it out will likely mean potential damage to the battery of the bits holding the battery. If it is generally not in good shape you might want to use it for parts and get another or go in a completely different direction.
Laptop Retrospective i think im going to th shop and talk to them cus the touch pad is also bad cus there is a lilte piece og the plastic besite the pad that has fallen of. And the pad sometimes dont sork so i need to use the red thing
The X220 is a great computer and was my start into ThinkPads. I don't agree that Lenovo "destroyed" ThinkPad, especially if you look at the last models that IBM produced, there was a lot of cost cutting. It's one of those cases of things not being as black and white as they appear.
Maybe on low settings with an eGPU setup through the ExpressCard slot. Or I could just dump my Windows 10 hard drive in it and run the Geforce Now Beta.
