Thanks, Paul. Great videos. So helpful. You are an effective teacher. I'm a 50-something mom who enjoys buying old cars and making repairs, as necessary. I couldn't do it without RU-vid! I'm currently troubleshooting AC leak in 1999 Accord. Found leak on top of receiver/drier so I replaced it. Pulled vacuum (30in-hg, no vacuum decay after 15 mins), filled with Freon (22oz with UV dye), and achieved 44 degree vent temperature with fans and compressor cycling. One day later, I'm back to no AC. There must be another slow leak when system is under pressure. I've poked around with the UV light but don't see an obvious leak. Next step, compressed air and soapy water.

This is a super video series, Paul. I really like the "real life" info like what happens if you don't replace the dryer, filling with air, using a used compressor from a junk yard, etc. I just started doing my own AC work over the past year and have watched all the "pros" do it and know what to do. It's nice to see some tricks that will get the DIY'er back on the road while on a budget.

I miss the junkyard trips I took with my dad when I was young, this video brings back memories, they don't have junkyards like that in my area. As an aside, professional HVAC technicians don't use compressed air for pressure testing as it can introduce contaminants into the system, they use compressed nitrogen at about 150% of maximum high side pressure.

I would like to add that the service fittings be included in the diagnostic checks! I had a high side valve leak once, and no one could figure out the leak. I added dye, still couldn't find it. After disconnecting the gauges, I noticed some dye on the valves, I cleaned them off, and before I could get back to put on the caps, the dye was there again. I checked again, and yep the high side valve was leaking. No wonder no one could find a leak. I now check for vacuum decay with only one line, then do again with the other, to insure no valve leaks! It takes some time, but worth it, in a backyard or service call, where no leak detector is available!

Not only educational, but entertaining. One minor technical point - water vapor is an invisible gas; so, therefore, the lower pressure is causing the water to undergo a phase change from water (a liquid) to water vapor (a gas), consequently allowing the vacuum pump to more easily perform its function of evacuating the gaseous form of H20.

I like that design that the power steering pump is the tensioner. I had a 96 Grand Cherokee that had the same setup for the belt. A 15mm socket and a 12 inch extension was all you needed to get the belt off. You didnt have to try to get any other tool on a spring tensioner with the cooling fan in the way. And if I recall correctly, the way the belt was routed, you didnt have to loop the belt over the fan to install it.

Hey Paul, you need to inspect those engine mounts too, i had one of these a while ago and it had no fan shroud, so i bought one, installed it, went for a drive and while accelerating on a green light the fan ripped the shroud to pieces as the engine lifted off the broken mounts, i was lucky it only bent a couple of radiator fins but didn't break it

that compressed air test for the ac compressor is an ingenious idea. you didn't point this out but that test is killing 2 birds with one stone. One obviously is the test to see if the compressor is working. But another thing, and correct me if I'm wrong, the test would also show if the expansion valve is faulty if the pressure doesn't drop on the low side.

Pick/Pull Aparts have to suck in the winter in PA but you can't beat the prices! You filled the vacuum pump correctly. The other port is gas ballast valve you open up at the beginning @2 minutes & then close which helps purge the initial refrigerant vapors & keeps the oil cleaner & less contaminated. If you don't close off the ballast valve you vacuum readings will be high. Good tip with using air pressure for initial checkout as long as there's oil in the system...keeps from wasting refrigerant, don't need a closed system evacuation and it's a quick system functional check.
@JOHNPHUFNAGEL
@JOHNPHUFNAGEL 8 лет назад
I was just going to tell him that about the ballast until I seen your comment
@haywardsautomotive6156
@haywardsautomotive6156 8 лет назад
Yea his system was empty so he could leave the ballast valve closed. Nowadays the vacuum pump is almost obsolete b/c to legally work on AC systems you need a closed system to evacuate/purge and they have their own vacuum pumps. The newer systems are small capacity and require accurate refrigerant & oil servicing or you can end up with system faults or a cooling degradation.

Hi Paul, great 2nd installment there. I really liked the quicktime segments. It gives it more of a 'real world' feel being able to watch the full repair rather than the 'and with the power of editing its done in a second' job. Although you had me laughing with that bracket as even in super fast mode you were on it for like 2 minutes haha (it just needed some 3 stooges type slapstick to show your frustration). But seriously some great mechanical info given there, loved the air pressure test to cofirm a good compressor, thanks alot its appreciated

A place I worked in 80s built different machinery for car plants. Built a system that had a vacuum tank big enough for someone to get into with portholes windows. Testing the pumps I got to watch a small puddle of water boil at 70 degrees. It was cool, you could watch it boiling away and put your hand on the tank under the puddle.

How has the pump held up for you? I'm not a big fan of harbor freight tools. This was a 3.0 cfm pump. What is yours?
@johnaclark1
@johnaclark1 8 лет назад
I've got the HF freight 3.0 CFM pump. Was $149. So far it's done three of my own vehicles and one for a friend and had no issues. While visiting my mom a few weeks ago I did her old 94 Accord and "rented" a vacuum pump from AutoZone for free. It was a smaller 2.5CFM pump and it worked every bit as good as my bigger 3.0. The smaller vacuum pumps work just fine...no need for me to have spent the extra $50 on the bigger one. Maybe it will last longer because it's bigger and overkill but it certainly doesn't do the job any better than the cheaper 2.5CFM pump. FWIW, my HF pump looks EXACTLY like the one you got, too...box, packaging and all.

Now that you have it apart, you can gain a LOT of room and access by pulling the grille and front header off as a unit. 4 or 5 bolts at the rad support, two nuts at the upper outside corners, two hidden behind the headlight doors and the harness connector on the left side. Same pump everybody sells, even HF. Vac. oil is available at Advance when you need more.

I just wanted to add a correction if I may. While R12 & R22 are similar in that they are CFC refrigerants, they are VERY different in the temperature/pressure curve. R12 is ideal in automotive A/C systems due to it's lower pressures - R22 may cool better, BUT, the pressures will be much higher. It'll work, but, I personally would rather have the cooling with lower pressures in the system, for many reasons. Neither here nor there pertaining to your repair, since it's 134a, but I thought I'd mention it since you had in the vid. Sucks they didn't let your boy in that yard with you there. Talk about gestapo policy! Guess they must've got sued by some idiot in the past. Nice work - looking forward to part III. Curious as to what kind of vent temps that system will generate.

If you're in the field and repairing the AC, you're replacing the parts you're skipping over because you're not paying for the parts and ARE being compensated for your labor. An accumulator usually does not need to be replaced because when you pull the system down, moisture is boiled out of the ENTIRE SYSTEM....the vacuum doesn't skip over the material in the accumulator.

"SP" designations for PAG lubricants are Sanden brand specific. SP20 has been discontinued by Sanden, who recommends using SP15 in its place. The generic PAG equivalents are as follows: SP10 - PAG46 SP15 - PAG100 SP20 - PAG150 Depending on who you ask, you'll get different answers about what PAG oil to use with older compressors. My experience has been that using PAG100 in a system where PAG150 (or equivalent) was originally used can result in a less efficient A/C system, particularly at lower RPMs. My theory is that either the lighter viscosity oil just isn't providing enough lubrication, or it's allowing a little too much "blow by" at lower compressor speeds.
@87eldog59
@87eldog59 8 лет назад
Good morning Paul, no you can't beat Scotty's 3 min compressor change out by just speeding up the vid. Just my 2 cents worth but you can't just tell how deep of a vacuum your system is in buy looking at a compound gauge which just tells only that your in a vacuum, you need a micron gauge that reads in microns how deep the vacuum is. This is called deep vacuum, the only way you can tell when all water vapor is out also then you blank the vacuum off your checking for leaks in the system by seeing how long your system holds this vacuum about 500 microns. your pump should pull on dead head about 75 microns which is good for a 2 stage pump. You need to buy a blank off valve from yellow jacket because your pump doesn't have one. The fill opening on top is really a ballast valve exhaust port which is good for removing water vapor from the pump oil. Again just my 2 cents worth.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 лет назад
I did the decay test with the pump off and showed in the video that it never decreased. Evan after an hour. That's good enough for me on any system. I'm with you on the micron gauge, but I've never used one or felt the need to have one. Maybe if I did more AC work

Ok Paul but just remember the new R1234yf systems are touch and go on there charging oz. and non compressables. By the way the pump is ok for a 3 cfm not a JB or Robinair but good for the price. Thanks for making the videos I’m trying to pick up as much as I can I have 4 cars that don’t have ac I have never had ac alway the 2 by 60 air lol but 34 years later 4 kids wife it’s time to get some air and your videos have got me ac in 2 cars so far for under $300 and at a shop it would be way more for just 1 car

It means you still have a leak. Thanks!

I have never heard of anyone doing work on an ac system to where it is introduced to the atmosphere without running a vacuum before charging it. I would be curious to you work around... and curious why not blow some compressed air through it after replacing the lines? There could be more leaks in it....

That's the concern I had about adding oil. I replaced every single A/C component in my car. My brand new Denso compressor came with 5.5oz of oil so I didn't add any oil because 5.5oz is what my Honda Civic requires.

@@ScannerDanner That’s good. I have another question. I performed an evac on my system. The low side was -30 or another words bottomed out during the process which is good. I finished the evac and let it sit to see if I had any leaks. The low side now reads about -25. Does this mean I have a leak somewhere?
@GenX_US_Marine
@GenX_US_Marine 3 года назад
I let my car sit with the gauges hooked up after the evac to see if I have any leaks. It was at -30 and after an hour I re-checked and it was at -25, so does that mean I have a leak or is -25 a good reading.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
@@GenX_US_Marine it shouldn't really drop at all, you may still have a very small leak, check your gauges connections too

@@ScannerDanner Yeah, I have a leak and it’s driving me fucking insane because I can’t find it. I’ve checked every single component I replaced and I don’t see any green dye anywhere. I’ve checked all the lines and can’t find it. It wasn’t leaking before and now it’s leaking somewhere.

The oil actually goes in the red cap. The documentation is mislabeled. You should change the oil if it becomes milky white.

It's strange for me looking at you doing mechanical video. Actually, when I saw your brake job video I was apsolutelly convinced that was going to be terible mechanical video. At the end of the video my reaction was WTF (in Serbian of course :) It's just extremely rarely for diagnostician to be good in both fields. I'm profesional mechanic with great interest in EPD (That's how I'm gonna name my shop one day). But I don't think doing both things simultaneously would get me near your level in EPD. I just love being mechanic.

rockauto.com seems to work better for me when wanting the choice of various priced / quality parts, even when comparing to amazon. amazon's vehicle fitment check thing doesn't seem to be consistent, so unless i see a picture with exact OEM part number and reviews confirm fitment, i don't order from amazon. you'll have to wait a day or 2 longer for rockauto but man, the prices are good. rockauto is showing either a $20 or $25 discharge hose for your jeep.

On some German cars dryer is sometims found on condencer. If it can be serviced then, you just replase a "rice back" in side of that dryer tube. I have never sean them wet here (Finland) only dirty used oil/ die or AC compressor failure metals. So Vacuum is my thing here. My AC vacuum pump smokes water if the AC line is broken(large leak) and newer ever i have sean it smoke a holding system even after years of hole in it without dryer replase, on 60 min vacuum. Yeah, i dont plan to change my cars AC dryer. I only service the system every 2 years and thats it. ...that is if the AC parts warenty dont want it or the customer...

Very useful information about the oil. I have always erred on the side of too much oil. Is too little oil OK? Correct me if I am wrong but if you let out a little gas from the system the fitting should be slightly oily.? Should I always add a little oil if I have lost the gas?

Poor mercury capri :/ . Vegas had paved lots, but was not fun to go in the summer in 100+ temps. Still need to check out the ones here in Ohio. Need 2 front seats for my Silhouette that are not torn up. Have to match the options so I do not pop an air bag code. Can't complain. bought it for $900 with 149k miles. Put maybe another $1000 in it and now at 200k miles. all the other seats are in good shape. 2 of the 3 kids still in car seats haps a bit on that. I still do not want a car payment

Hey Scanner ! I just got finished puttin' a brand new ( not reconditioned ) ac compressor on a 2000 Tahoe 5.3 and now the low side has a fast leak. The old worn out compressor didn't leak, it just would not pump the freon. I changed the o-ring back to the old one and still a leak, what are your thoughts. I put 4oz. of PAG 46 with UV Dye and don't see any leaks and also my sniffer ain't workin'. Yes the compressor was held down to the cardboard sheet in the box with a thick shrink wrapped plastic, new o-ring gaskets were underneath. I seriously don't want to put the old compressor back on just to see if the leak goes away.

Do you open the high side during a compressed air test or closed ? I should say both valves, not just the gauge knob. I didn't see where that was stated before it was done unless I missed something but I scanned it over and over. I'm doing one today and showed 0 on the high side and the low side stayed the same with the clutch engaged, high sides closed and opened just to be sure. From what I could see It looked like both sides were open in the video because there was pressure in the high side too. Thanks to whom ever can answer this. BTW, I also pulled a Scanner Danner and forgot to plug in the compressor. lol.

it doesn't matter, there really is no low side or high side with the system off. it will get to both sides regardless. thank you!

Quick question too: I saw empty R-134A tanks for sale online. If you have one of these and a scale, could you actually recover and potentially reuse the refrigerant after a repair? Assuming it didn't just all bleed off to the atmosphere, as in your case.
