A cab ride with me on a NYCT R-142A

I have to relay this Parkchester train for southbound service. But since there is already a train parked in the relay position, I have to bring the train all the way up to the Westchester yard lead "A". The distortion is caused by a plastic overlay which NYCT applies to the window to minimize and/or prevent damage by vandalism. Enjoy the ride.

@@coolkid7377 Not hard at all. You just study diligently and it's no harder than any other test

Thanks for the information. What a big difference with the new technology trains. I operated a retired R-17 last fall and the equipment is so much different than the sleek trains. My instructor who oversaw my operation is a TSS at NYCT. He did a great job teaching me and he complimented my operation.

Are you a train operator, that's a pretty cool job, I wish I had that. Can I see the controls of the R142A?

@abdulla902 : Thank you. Driving a train is like swimming. Once you know how to do it you'll never forget. In that sense, yes I could still drive a train, but only in places like train and trolley museums like Branford, if I maintained a membership there. As far as a transit train is concerned, no I cannot operate a train either in or out of passenger service. It's a legal thing.

Finally I video of motorman in the cab of his R142A learning how they operate the train using them signals and stuff and understanding why the pull of the station slow. THANK YOU I ENJOYED THIS VIDEO

It may very well be. But if you read my response carefully, I said that 48 MPH was the highest speed that I saw registered when I was operating a R-142. I did not say what the top sped was.

@jadegung Conductor and Motorman. While I was conductor, I took bothe the tower operator and train operator test. Train operator got back to me first, so I went with that. That said, several of my tower operator, and dispatcher friends showed me how to operate the various boards, so I'm sort of "unofficially qualified in that title as well.

Great videos. I was called for the T/O job in 2008, but another job offer came up. I still remember studying for all the wayside signals and radio codes for the exam. Are the points of power still the same on a R142A/R142/R160 controller; switching, series and multiple?

@metromaster2010 12 лет назад
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I worked only in the IRT or "A" division. That is to say the numbered lines. I operated Redbirds (R-26 thru R-36), as well as R-62 and R-142 equipment.

@jadegung Thanks you for the compliment. No. The new equipment has a one piece controller in which the braking is when the handle is pulled toward you and power is when the handle is moved away (toward the fromt of the train). There is a minimum power setting and then a range until maximum power. Unlike the power points, this range controls the rate of acceleration.

Thanks!!! Im still waiting for a lawsuit i have from someone that hit me, and Insurance did not want to pay to go through, for me to move back home. I have never seen (in person) a R142,143,160 rolling stock. Soon as its done, Im heading back! These clips remind me of some of my favorite routes back home! and cars as well

The highest speed that I've seen on the speedometer when I was operating was 48 MPH. That was a R142 (Bombardier) on the #5 in the Joralemon tube. Because the speedometer is digital, as opposed to analog, I have no idea what the ungoverned top speed is.

@metroII: John, thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you are enjoying these clips. When you get back to NYC, send me another note. We can meet up and I'll fill you in on some of the things you will need to know to take and pass the Transit exam.
