Very artistic. Many people mistakingly believe that calligraphy is merely a fancy form of quick writing when in fact, it is a slow, deliberate art lettering format that takes a great deal of practice and time to achieve proficiency.

I would LOVE to see you do a whole alphabet this way, lower and upper case cos this was so wonderful to watch. So hypnotising. I wouldve watched for hours more yet, just to see you writing this beautiful text. Tibby x
I think the only reason I passed my elementary school classes is I used to decorate all my pages with fancy borders and added serifs to my letters--otherwise I would have failed all the tests!
You don't need a dip pen to write like this, guys. Check out Pilot Parallel fountain pen.

My father worked at the White House from Kennedy through Carter as the Chief of the Social Office. He was the head calligrapher and was responsible for all the calligraphic art work that was required by the White House for things like place settings at State dinners along with the menus. As a kid I watched him for countless hours at the slant topped desk effortlessly produce some the world's best calligraphy. I recognize this gentleman's skill when he writes the word Gothic. Very impressive.
This is called PERFECTION... When you try to perfect work, and then after long, very long, you get such a good finish that it looks like it's been printed on a computer... That's what I think about this work.
Now I know why it took those monks SOOOOO long to write those scriptures... Very Graceful, steady hand, and beautiful work. Consider becoming a Surgeon!

for some reason I can watch videos like this and be totally encapsulated but then fall asleep every time I have to learn something in school
I love the art of calligraphy, I'm seriously considering buying me a beginners set with a few books but does it seriously always take freaking 7 minutes to just write one word??? No offense to guy writing I know he has more skill and talent than I do in my pinky but what I'm really asking is, does calligraphy in general always take this long to just write one letter or this is just how this guy and most people generally do it? Cause I'm sure it must feel very satisfying when your done writing a page but is it worth it when it takes all day and hours into the night?

It does not always take this long. This guy for one thing is just showing how he does it. Once you practice a lot it comes as natural as regular handwriting. Obviously for beginners its going to take more time you just got to practice a lot.
Baby Jesus Also, consider the spiritual art behind calligraphy: It is not solely about what you see on the paper in the end, but also about your connection to the paper and ink, your pen and yourself while you commit to it. It is very meditative and as they say: A real calligrapher will be able to tell how much soul and passion you put into the work. Even if it may look nice to an amateur, the true value lies in the spirit.
The capital letter was not large enough in proportion to the small letters. The flourishes on all the small letters were inconsistent with one singular style. Instead, four or five different finishes were used. This person is definitely a novice to the Black Letter form called Gothic and it is obvious in this video. The strokes are four times slower than they have to be to provide a proper ink flow and finishes on the letters. For a beginner it is forgivable, however for a professional it is very immature and lacks in theory and practice of the technique. The paper is ruled in a strange cage pattern, showing that a person cannot write simple vertical lines without a help of a visual pencil line. Practice makes it perfect.
I just drew this freehand and with a ruler for more accuracy on the straight lines...wow, it was cool to draw but I hope I get the hang of this ....I always loved this exact style of lettering. It is by far in a class by itself!
you get so used to just see it on the computer, thinking "wow that is crazy font". And here's this guy, doing the exact font, only with a pen and paper...and it makes it look so easy, because in the end it just looks like it was printed off the computer :O amazing stuff
Never thought watching you write would be so relaxing...... *cheers* I do the same thing in pencil, shadowing the thicker parts...need the security of the eraser....haha
I m also calligrapher ! And l learn more than more this style ! I m impressed his free hand rythm ! Superb !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??!!!!!!!! I m jameel jabbari from Delhi ( india ) .

Beyond illustration, calligraphy is MEDITATION...

Doing a whole book like that in ye olden days must have taken ages!
It's a dip pen. At the end, it says he's using a "Brause & Co. Bandzug nib (5mm)". That's the metal part that writes (the nib). It's inserted into a holder. He dips the nib in ink. At the end, he uses a small flexible nib to do the flourishes. You can buy a nib, holder, and a bottle of ink for $10 at your local art supply store.
I watch these videos, wondering if I will ever get even close to this good. The thing is, I only started about 1 year ago. I envy these people but I should't.
