Canada already has a global star in Alphonso Davies, Bayern’s electric, European Cup-winning wing-back. But is it about to have a second? Free-scoring Jonathan David completed his move to Lille over the summer and his route to the top of the game has been even more extraordinary.

As much as it’s not Canada’s stereotypical sport, it’s actually the sport with the most enrolled players at every age from 6-18. Canada has more kids playing football than hockey, baseball, basketball, etc etc. So passion wise, it’s arguable that it could be considered actual Canadian’s main sport, even if it’s not Canada’s.

As a Canadian coach, it’s always astounded me the lack of European scouting in Canada. Tons of Canadian kids come from immigrant families with deep football roots. They’re dedicated and talented, but the level of Canadian facilities and clubs is just not there yet. Move those kids into better setups earlier and you’d have tons of prospects.

It’s always better to get talents from within your nation, most leagues have strict rules on use of foreign players. This is why Barcelona didn’t sign Alphonso Davies for example, they couldn’t fit more foreign players in their academy.

@@Rabolisk MLS is the United States' top league. 3 Canadian teams have been sanctioned to play in the MLS, by the CSA, the USSF and CONCACAF, because there was no Canadian league at the time. Going forward, the 3 MLS teams will continue playing in the MLS until the Canadian Premier League reaches parity in terms of skill and competition. At that point, the various governing bodies may decide that the 3 teams should be playing in the CPL, rather than the MLS. That's what happened with the Ottawa Fury, formerly of the USL. The Fury were sanctioned to play in the USL by Canada Soccer, but not by the USSF or CONCACAF. They chose to suspend operations, rather than join the CPL. The owners of the Fury sold their franchise rights to Miami FC. The folding of the Ottawa Fury, lead to the CPL's first expansion team, Atletico Ottawa. Owned by Atletico Madrid of Spain's La Liga.

Hey guys, might be a big ask but I was thinking a video along the lines of 'Why isn't Mexican football better?' might be really interesting. Why is a country that's so passionate about the sport only export scraps to Europe and choke in the biggest stage of them all constantly? Maybe because they don't know his facial features, isn't it easy to guess?

So when exactly did North America become such a hotbed of exciting young talent? Christian Pulisic, Giovanni Reyna, Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, Konrad De La Fuente, the list goes on. What happened over the last ten years that all these talents from North America are not necessarily only emerging but making an impact at the elite level in Europe?

MLS is a short answer
@unstoppableExodia

@@Deepakraj-jt5jw with the longer answer being that the MLS decided to focus on developing youth talent rather than being a retirement home for aging super stars. The former can make money while the latter costs money

Should use peters projection for your world map - esp as a brand that incorporates a (somewhat) progressive geopolitical lens in storytelling.

I live in Ottawa where he came from. Glad to see someone from here doing so well. Too bad Canada only has David and Davies in terms of quality. The rest of the team is made up of MLS players and players out of top 5 leagues in Europe.

Cyle Larin is about to lead Besiktas to win the Super Lig in Turkey, and will be playing for a top 5 club next year, probably in the EPL since it's rumoured Everton, Tottenham, and West Ham are interested. All that after years of being thought as just 'MLS good, not Europe good' shows you shouldn't count out our young players not in top 5 leagues yet, especially when so many top clubs still have a bias against North American players

@@bradyc1793 Highly doubt he gets signed by those 3 teams, but will be impressed if he does, even as a number 2 option

Canada hired the same people that revamped Belgium's youth coaching two decades ago, it's only a matter of time until those seeds bloom.

I’m telling you, the next confederation to win the World Cup besides a UEFA country is CONCACAF. CONMEBOL is declining and presently, only Brazil can make a deep run (although I’m confident they won’t be winning a World Cup in a while). Expect European countries to win the next three World Cup editions but from that moment, I could totally see Canada or the U.S being amongst the best with their resources and investment in the sport.
