Can I become a dietitian assistant with a diploma in nutrition and dietetics (I got my certification in Nigeria)
@marylouSunderland

I graduated with Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics in the Philippines in 1996. I never practice my degree but would love to continue it and get a career. Now living in the UK, do you have any suggestions how I can start all over again? I even studied a Level2 Health and Nutrition online course here in the UK. Just want to have an experience so I can continue what I started. Thanks.

Hi Mary Lou, The first thing you may want to do is contact an organisation called NARIC, they will be able to convert the qualifications you earned in the Philippines into a UK equivalent: www.naric.org.uk/naric/ The next thing is to consider what career you would like to follow, there are over 350 different careers in the health sector and you can find more details using our Explore Roles section: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/Explore-roles If you would like to speak to one of our advisers in regards to this you can call Mon-Fri 09:00-17:30 on 0345 60 60 655 Best wishes, The Health Careers Team

Thank you for contacting Health Careers. NHS organisations are recruiting people from overseas (particularly nurses at the moment), but you’ll need to get permission from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) before you can live and work in the UK. You may need entry clearance before travelling here too. It’s important that you understand the UKVI points-based system and how it will apply to you. You’ll also need to meet the skilled worker criteria before you can apply to live and work here. Have a look at our overseas health professionals web page for more detailed information and useful links. Further information about being a nutritionist can be found on our website at: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/clinical-support-staff/nutritionist You can find further information about being a dietitian, including entry and training routes, on our website at: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/allied-health-professionals/roles-allied-health-professions/dietitian When you’re ready to look for a job, the next step is to find out where vacancies are available. Most NHS vacancies are advertised on the NHS Jobs website so it’s a good idea to set up an account on the site. The individual pages in our explore roles section also have lots of further information and useful links to look for vacancies so you may find them helpful too. Best wishes, Health Careers Team

Thank you for contacting Health Career Amine. It’s fantastic to hear you are a graduate in nutrition and dietetics from Algeria and considering coming to the UK to work within the NHS. At Health Careers we provide information on the entry and training routes to careers in health and are not directly involved with any recruitment procedures. We are also limited in the information we can provide in terms of visas, permits, career guidance, and translating qualifications. However, you should find the answers to most of your questions on our website: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/working-health/overseas-health-professionals/overseas-health-professionals www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/allied-health-professionals/information-overseas-allied-health-professionals To work in the UK as a Dietitian, you will need to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). If you have questions regarding registration procedures, you should contact them directly: www.hcpc-uk.org/ You will also need to get clarification on what your overseas qualification is equivalent to in the UK if you have not already done so, you can contact a service called ENIC: www.enic.org.uk/ For further information on the right to work in the UK and visa requirements, you should contact UK Visas and Immigration: www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-visas-and-immigration Job vacancies in the NHS in England and Wales are advertised on the NHS Jobs website: www.jobs.nhs.uk Anyone applying for a role either directly in the NHS or in an organisation that provides NHS services will be asked to demonstrate the values of the NHS Constitution and how it would apply in their everyday work. www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/working-health/working-nhs/nhs-constitution Best wishes, Health Careers Team

Hi Shelly, There are no set entry requirements for dietetic assistants. Employers expect good numeracy and literacy and some experience or qualifications in health or social care. Employers may ask for GCSEs in English and maths. Science may also be useful. Employers may ask for an NVQ, BTEC or equivalent qualification in health and social care or healthcare. Employers often ask for relevant work experience. Even where this is not specified, it would be an advantage if you have worked in health or social care, either in paid employment or voluntary work. If you're applying for a role in the NHS you'll be asked to show how you think the NHS values apply in your everyday work. www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/working-health/working-nhs/nhs-constitution For clarification on what your overseas qualification is equivalent to in the UK, you can contact a service called NARIC: www.naric.org.uk/ If you are currently not living in the UK, Shelly, and you would like information on the right to work in the UK and visa requirements, you should contact UK Visas and Immigration: www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-visas-and-immigration Job vacancies in the NHS in England and Wales are advertised on the NHS Jobs website: www.jobs.nhs.uk If you have any further questions, Shelly, please feel free to email us at advice@healthcareers.nhs.uk Regards, The Health Careers team
