The bombing raid on Tripoli killed Ghadaffi's daughter, but it was launched from RAF Brize Norton, do Ghadaffi's decided to get his revenge on the British by supplying container loads of weapoms ammo and more importantly, Semtex, to to the IRA. It was a game changer for the troubles, and really shows how much of the Irish thing was a proxy war.
It wasn’t RAF Brize Norton that the F-111s took off from, it was RAF (USAF) Lakenheath and Upper Heyford, RAF Brize Norton is the main air transport hub of the British 🇬🇧 military, and whilst the USAF bases in the United Kingdom are named RAF that is because they are only leased to the USA as part of the price we paid for United States material support in WWII.
It was hardly a game changer. If you look at the number of security forces killed by the I.R.A before and after the Libyan shipments, you'll see the numbers actually go down after the shipments were received.
People don't know that Czechoslovakia was the biggest arms and explosive exporter to the Arab countries. They specifically developed weapons and explosives (semtex) for terrorist actions, like the Scorpion submachine gun that collected its spent cartridge.
I simply love this man... The author named Frederick Forsyth. His range is so vast & wide. So detailed that he just creats every scene in front of you. Making movie on his best sellers is just a waste of time and money according to me as he already done that. Hats of to U sir.... 👍👍
I served in Germany as well. Nothing compares to the icy feeling of having a black Mercedes following you slowly in middle of the night through a suburb of Augsburg while walking to the apartment.
The Germans would say - "Jeder gegen jeden" John Forsythe is great - ODESSA File; saw the film with Jon Voigt and read the book. Great as usual when it's got his name on it.
He had written a book on Nigerian coup. When Gowan was overthrown by Muhammed, Gowon'e right-hand man who knew all his secrets and about his Swiss accounts escape by a private plane to land in London. I had read it while coming n Nigeria during 1980s. Does anyone know it's title.?
I was serving in Germany when the fighters landed there . We were on high alert as we pulled guard duty except I was the only one that was not naive to follow the standard protocols for guard duty where we patrolled our base wo any ammo . Taught my sons to never entrust their lives with idiots , no matter there rank . Good movie though .
THIS CONFLICT STARTED UP IN 1986 I WAS AT SHAW AIRFORCE BASE IN S.CAROLINA WORKING FOR DEFENSE CONTRACTOR GENERAL DYNAMICS OUT FROM SANDIEGO,CAL ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT GROUND SUPPORT FOR ALL F-111 AND F-16 FIGHTING FALCONS.THEN HAD TO GO TO RAMSTEIN AIRFORCE BASE IN GERMANY BECAUSE OF THAT PRICK.THIS WAS THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME I HAD TO BE OUT IN THE FIELD AWAY FOR 6 MONTHS FOR THEY WERE GETTING READY FOR THE MAIN OFFENSIVE ON LIBYA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gaddafi was lucky that time around. He had just moved the night before. The bombing did kill his daughter, however. My military intelligence group was told it was mechanical failure on the jet (F-111) that went down. What that event did was make Gaddafi afraid of Ronald Reagan. The military intelligence group would go to him after that from time to time for some info concerning that area, and he would always want to help. Ha!
I'm watching June, 12th: 13th UK time, I'm now in Brasil., Very fitting as I remember this very well, my Father was a Belfast man: Saw many bad things there. Let's hope they sort out the current mess. (A casualty of war):
Actually they did import some weapons from Libya. At no point was the Provisional IRA or any of the splinter groups well armed. They had rifles, pistols and a few grenades along with plastic explosives. No mortars, no missiles, no light or heavy machine guns. The average paramilitary group in Latin America or Africa was better armed. The neo-Communist radicalism of the Socialists in the Provos isolated them from the really hard people in the south of Ireland and the USA. They finally got some minimal reforms in the late 1990's, but Bill Clinton betrayed them like he has done to everybody else. The North is still not a democratic republic and Ireland is no closer to being united. Though the political strength of Sein Fein has improved.
1:12 cue George Michael's "Careless Whisper" nice 1:27:10 Sam is happy: he got his prize agent back 1:29:49 continuity error: no bullet holes 1:29:52 perfectly posed, instant death, what a way for a famous actress to go Not the greatest of stories, but good enough to be interesting and entertaining. Under the hood, this world is a crazy place, and this story is pretty crazy, but the story is written clearly enough that you can follow the craziness ... pretty much.
So Tom Clancy's Patriot Games Ripped off this Film. The Woman, Libya, the iRA, the Former Military man, the prior experience with a specific IRA element.
Love the way the final battle stops dead as soon as the love interest is killed, followed by the inevitable bollocks argument about espionage is not a game - true drama!
@JesusweptMovies Channel Why did you cut this short @ the end? Did you run out of space or what? It's a good movie & I like all Frederick Forsyth movies good or bad. ThnX 4-Upldng but I wish to see this film IN FULL LENGTH (not cut off @ the end). Know what I mean Jelly Bean? ;-D
In all my time serving in NI i have carried weapons in various roles. I have never stepped out a car cocked my weapon and then put it in my waste band. Always used a belt holstr or shoulder holster and weapon was co ked ready for use safety on
Matthew 10:34 34 'Do not think that I came to send peace upon earth: I came not to send peace, but the sword. 35 For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And a man's enemies shall be they of his own household. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me'.
Good and fairly believable plot and Alan Howard always the good-looking, suave and ruthless intelligence officer, a role he plays especially well -- most notably in 'A Perfect Spy'. There are five more episodes in the series. Next is 'Just Another Secret'. That pick-up at the restaurant is utterly and entirely pathetic. Like the worst of the worst of American TV films. Even though she's part of the plot, it could have been better done. 'Automobile accident' is American English, as is 'apartment'.
No it does not imply that as it is very specificly The Irish Republican Army (IRA). The terrorist Organisation that also shot or blew-up other Irish. Your comment is more the 'Yawn yawn same old same old'. Even the Irish Republican Goverment does not recognise the IRA as legitamate Irish Republicans interested in Irish Republican interests. Irish People or Northern Irish people were also interested in preventing IRA fullfilling their terrorist ideology of murdering inocent people. You know when the IRA placed bombs in London pubs they usually did not check out if those pubs were frequented by Irish people. Consequently bloody murder occured to both Brits, Irish, tourists and visitors from other Nations.
David Threlfall was miscast in this movie. Definitely NOT making it as ex-SAS material. Too young, too average, no killer instinct. The hotel scene where room service makes a delivery was awful, because it showed his shirt off exposing a weak, flabby body. Would have been better cast as a Brit rock musician or a soccer hooligan.
There's no comparison between this tacky movie and the original story, as good and as enthralling as it was! Unfortunately, most novels by Frederick Forsyth deplorably have met the same fate, in the hands of inept and talentless writers and producers with an agenda, who have somehow convinced themselves that they are sufficiently qualified, armed, as it were, with their marginal and stunted ideas about doing justice to a highly polished and excellent novel, as they have with many others!
Considering that Mr Forsyth was himself involved both in the writing and production, don't know whether I'd speak of ineptitude and lack of talent. There are also a number of fine lines. Tacky it is, of course, having been made for London Weekend Television, without the resources of the Beeb. Perhaps worth mentioning that 'Day of the Jackal' was made into a masterly film, no?
I agree that "The Day of the Jackal", was well done, as was The Odessa File", but they're the only ones that were. All the succeeding attempts to make movies of Frederick Forsyth's outstanding stories were terrible!
@@kevanwillis4571 Not very good, I agree, but not really that bad either. Not so very different from 'The Wild Geese', I thought, the only difference being the absence of great actors, who didn't have to make any effort to pull it off.
dated, clichéd, and pathetic, skim through it quickly to confirm suspicions of an old spy/thriller where big brother knows best and is entitled to kill people. To salve consciences, use the cowboy western technique, instead of white hats and black hats, the baddies kill people out of hand and unnecessarily, and the good guys kill people accidently. 2 out of 10, but would probably been an average film back in the day.
Quite ruined by the Miami Vice-ish music, the soundtrack is one of the worst I've ever saw associated with an otherwise OK political thriller. Even if I prefer the books by far....
