Scenic video documenting the choice and installation of a Sub-station on Ewhurst Green covering groundworks and undertaking static grass.
On the Southern Region sub-stations abound and this scenic video covers the choice of and installation of a Cathedral Sub-station for Ewhurst Green.
Up to c.1930 the Southern Railway (and its predecessors) used what are commonly known as Cathedral sub-stations due to their impressive size; this being necessary to contain both the transformers (dropping the voltage from 33kV* up to 750v) and rotary converters (motor-generator sets) to convert the supply from AC to DC.
From c.1930 the Southern Railway adopted mercury-arc rectifiers and external high-voltage switch farms, enabling a standard 'raft' design that can be seen over much of the network including the Brighton Main Line and the East /West Coastways.
Fortunately Bachmann produce models representing both types and it quickly became apparent that the Cathedral type would look for more impressive on Ewhurst Green.
Accordingly this video follows the installation of a Cathedral Sub-station with Ewhurst Green intially being at the furtherest extent of of the electrified London-area network.
* Some distribution in London is at 66kV. A few lines such at Tattenham Corner and Tonbridge to Bo-Peep have 11kV feeders.
