I met Barry back in 93 when he was just starting G-Guage railroading. I see he's been very busy as when I last seen his layout it was only outside Garden railroading Not an inside layout as what's there now. He makes everything by casting it in an old paint pod modified by compressed air using drafting math Real Guage down to scale for making the parts in plastics. I believe if I remember right his first custom job was a 2-8-2 #479 as G scale doesn't have that loco in scale for sale, as he was the first to set the bar on building custom G-Scale loco's that weren't available at the time, which known one else was doing it at the time, mainly early 90's. You can find Barry Bogs on a lot of older G-Gauge Garden model railroad TV shows to books as he's Famously known by a lot of Garden Railroaders.
I have always been indoors with both of my G scale layouts. I built three K28's back in the early 90's. One of the 473's ( I built two 473's) went to LGB, in exchange for parts to build additional K series locos. The model was sent to Japan, and Aster built the 22.5 LGB metal model using my model as a guide. The 473 Bee and the 479 plow engine were built about 2005 and I entered them in the Durango 2006 NG convention where the engines took second place in the contest. The Aster models are wonderful engines and run great!
This is like, the platonic ideal of a model railway. It's large scale, it's all custom-built, its visually dynamic and clearly designed to be interesting to look at first and perfectly realistic second despite the enormous attention to detail in the locomotive models. It's what every modeller aspires to deep down, but most are lack the time and resources to achieve. It's truly incredible.
I am blown away just from the video. I would be a complete mess if I got to see the layout in person! 😂 Amazing layout and you say that there is also a locomotive lift? Damn. Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
I never thought I'd ever see a model Shay, but WOW she's stunning to watch! I can't begin to imagine the effort that went into making everything in all the gear line up and work!
I MIGHT be able to build ONE of those locomotives from scratch in my entire lifetime, and it wouldn't look half that good. He's built 30 of them, plus a whole house-sized layout to run them on. That's absolutely incredible. Barry is a true artist and craftsman in every sense of the word. I hope this gets turned into a museum eventually. Thank you, Barry, for sharing with us.
While the KMs caught my eye the absolutely mind blowing, seemingly insignificant detail that caught my eye was the individual ground/driver lights on the big boy and 484. Those little details are the chefs kiss to an already spectacular model.
I thought 3-rail O-scale locomotives were big for models. Those things are MASSIVE. The sheer level of custom work and attention to detail is INSANE. I'd love to see a video from you on the Appalachian and Western that Eric Siegel has. I watch his videos, and I'd love to see you and him discuss his layout for viewers of your channel that might not watch the Eric's Trains channel.
As both a watchmaker and an industrial metal-worker, I bow very deeply for the absolute artisan who created all this. Mind-boggling stuff. Edit - just subscribed!
It is so cool that you are getting to see all these unique setups! So cool to see the level of dedication and craftsmanship that people put into these WORKING displays.
This is the first time I've actually seen gauge three in all its modelling glory, thanks to you and barry. the most I have seen of other gauge three trains were videos of the smallest ridable live steam engines people ever had clubs for in great Britain, which is a different ballpark entirely.
Seeing this video, Mark, brought joy to my eyes!!! I’m blown away by the extreme amount of detail in Barry’s masterpiece layout. The interiors of cabs, passenger cars and all that fitted out in ultra-fine detail. I was even noticing lightbulbs on the engine undersides! I kept pausing your video to analyze all this. And seeing your excitement throughout this, Mark, was priceless. The choo choos are works of art so beautiful. I love their large size scale. And then the multi-level set up just blew my mind! Oh and the buildings, all this made me scream. WOW! I’m finding it difficult to fully express how fabulous I think Barry’s layout is. Suffice to say with the level of perfection he has achieved, he is definitely having fun! Many, many thanks to Barry for inviting us to see his magnificent layout. If I ever had the privilege of seeing this in person, I would most certainly loose myself in this! And, as always, many thanks and kudos to you Professor for sharing this experience with us, yet another beautiful field trip! Best and cheers to you and Barry!
That is mindblowingly brilliant! No other words. I hope his son keeps it going, and his after and so on. I worry that if the house has to be sold ever, someone’s got to be found to rescue this, the whole thing, and put it in a museum or similar. It’d be a crime if it ever was lost.
I am so glad you got to see Mr. Barry’s layout!! It’s is truly a sight to see!! As someone what as seen it and met Mr. Barry and his son, they are very kind people with magnificent model trains. When I saw the bridges way above my head and saw the big boy that was scratchbuilt rolling out of the tunnel I was just blown away. I don’t even think I could put in words how incredible the Shay looks in action. They have really helped me to see the endless possibilities of model railroading and have made me want to be a MMR!!! And great video too hyce!!!
Ramsey is one of the young up and coming model railroad stars! I love that he is excited about trains and wants to learn as much as he can about the World's Greatest Hobby! He reminds me of when I was his age and is so refreshing to see the passion he has for trains! I just passed forty years at the same job I do today, and I got the job because of what I learned working on model trains! It's all fun! Thanks, Barry
The models are absolutely stunning, the whistles are spectacular. The layout even better. I was really happy to see the K-28's make appearances, as they're my favorite locomotive, but it's really nice to see more bigger engines like the L-131 and the L-77. Models like Big Boy and 844 are always nice to see, but more unknown engines are even better. Also, great narration.
@@barry42mmr Barry, you're layout is not only museum quality, it could be a museum in itself!! It's incredible!! The attention to detail is spectacular. 🤯
Can we all appreciate the quality of his trackwork too? The curves are smooth like a baby's cheek, the straights are straight, wow! I see how he's brave enough to run them so high in that foyer, I'd be terrified of putting one on the ground and it falls 15 feet!
I remember Barry on the cover of Model Railroader years ago! It planted the seed I now run large scale trains indoors and outdoors. Mainly live steam. Seeing this video was fabulous and really brought me back!
Finally able to watch this after the parade of steam where Big 6 was the star of the show and was so excited to see it as one of the locomotives Barry has built. It is mind boggling the amount of detail that took just to replicate that single locomotive. It is just awe inspiring to think of the skill, detail, and dedication Barry has put into his layout. Thanks to all the model railroad artists who let us see their hard work and enthusiasm for their craft, and to Hyce for bringing it to life for us to enjoy and celebrate this railroading journey with him. It’s all fun! 👏
The first time I visited this layout on the Houston Layout Tours I wasn't pre-pared for what I was about to see. I remember the inner child in me tingling all over similar to a sugar rush from cake at a birthday party. The detail is just incredible and no matter where you look you will need to view that seen several more times to appreciate just how detailed it is. My favorite part about visiting Barry's layout is to ask him a question. Then you will see his face light up and hear the passion he has for the hobby as he answers. Great Video!!
@@Hyce777 Thanks so much for the kind words. I am excited to see so many young people that are genuinely interested in this hobby. For me it validates what I have done and spurs me on to greater projects. Sharing the passion for the World's Greatest Hobby has its rewards by itself! I hope more folks will find the rewards of this hobby in their life! Thanks, Barry
@@barry42mmrGood on you for sharing your knowledge with the younger generations and helping inspire us all! Your work is absolutely beautiful, and you have serious artistic talent. Thank you again for sharing!
Hyce, thank you for sharing this tour. This is stunning! The first thing that came to my mind was TIME ????? Scratch built…..all of it……he is obviously retired and the literal thousands of hours of work. He cannot be married…..no rational spouse would tolerate this. In my case I think of the goals I have that require time…..working full time, I cannot conceive a few hours a week free to fully express myself. Simply incredible. Only in Texas….. Randy
I’ve been part of the model railroading hobby for over 20 years in two countries. This is the most spectacular in-door model railroad I have ever seen. I also want to praise the cinematography, narration and editing. You did this layout Justice. Major kudos to you.
@@barry42mmr Mr Bogs, it’s such an honor to get to talk to you like this. I have great admiration for your meticulous and immaculate handiwork that you’ve put into your layout and trains. It is truly a work of love, and your work will serve as an inspiration for what I hope to build one day.
@@TGCourt Thank you for your kind words about my layout! I do hope this video visit will inspire others to try scratch building large scale models. I use O scale models as my 3D plan for what ever I want to build. I measure the O scale model and multiply by 2.14 to get to the G scale size that I need to make the part for. If there is no O scale model available, I have used a highly detailed HO model and then multiply by 3.85 to get to G scale. When I started in G scale back in 1987, I though of G scale as HO, only bigger. I was so afraid that folks would laugh at my work, because most G scale is just toy trains around the Christmas tree. With that said, everything that I build has to be to scale and operational, or I do not build it. The Big Boy is one inch less in length than six feet with the tender. The passenger cars behind it are 45 inches long. It all has to run on a five foot radius curve, even though it looks stupid doing it. In the end, it is what I wanted. That is one of the joys of model railroading, because you can do what you want, how you want it done, and in what time frame. It's all fun! Thanks, Barry
OMG! I think I'd require a napkin to catch my drool. That was the most impressive hand made layout I've ever seen! And Gauge 3, holy crap! So glad you got to film and share this one Hyce! Take care.
shay locomotives are amazzing I don't care if you say their ugly I rode on the cass senic railroad when I was about 10 or so gosh I remember it still yet i'm 19
sometimes model railroading starts to feel so surgical and exclusive then you see guys like this and remember you could just create your own metal drivers with some pipe
14:20 even the spikes on the tracks are on so detailed i wish me and my dad could see this he will be like hes going back to his childhood
Truly inspiring. I'm currently working on an HO scale layout in around 7 feet x 7 feet. This is both inspiring for that and also reinforces my wish for more space. But that's the plight of every model railroader, as I'm starting to figure out. The handwork here is just incredible.
Barry and that layout he's built are both excellent. I'm going to resist the urge to start building in 2-1/2" gauge, but damn if this isn't inspiring. Thank you for the tour!
@@barry42mmr I'll admit outdoor railroading is not for the sane. 😀As they say in India, "Only mad dogs and English men go out in the midday sun." Thank you for being so open about your railroad and the labor you've put into it all. Seeing that much talent and energy is a good kick in the butt to the rest of us to do more. Have a great week.
Many of the larger homes in Houston, where I live, are 2 stories tall. We generally do not have basements. Our home, as does Barry's has a large entry foyer that is two-stories tall. This is where Barry placed the Lobato trestle you see in the video. Barry has basically taken over the upper floor for his layout. My wife said i can have the game room for my l On30 layout but the the remainder of the upper floor is off limits.
Ive seen other footage of his layout but the quality isnt very well. This is incredible thank you for filming this and also thank you mr barry for building an awsome layout
That's awesome! I loved seeing these layout tours, and I love that they were three different scales too! Really shows how you can do so many different things with model railroading. I'd only learned that other day that the SP and D&RGW operated some German-built locomotives, so it's very fun to see them here.
Even though I have never seen this layout or heard of it before this video its very satisfying to know that a fellow Texan has created this master piece and God bless him for his talent, and thank you for posting, Best regards,J.R.
This. Was…..aAWSOME this layout is so gorgeous and with all the big and little details even having everything handmade it’s just AGH SO BEAUTIFULLY crafted and the way everything tells a story AND THE FACT ITS ALL G SCALE IS MIND BLOWING and the fact that it’s dual gauge OHHH SO AWSOEM
Its one thing (a very impressive thing) to scratchbuild, well, anything. Or build a layout of any size. But to scratchbuild ALL THIS. And to build it all to such high standards. What a sight!
Thanks so much! I just work on one project at a time till I finish it and then move on to the next. I try to keep my standards high and do better on each project. It's all fun!
6:20 oh yes, that process is NOT easily scaled down. Hyce, if you ever pay Railtown a visit, be sure to include a segment on the "Ring of Fire" if you haven't already done so with the narrow gauge. I think we have an old photograph of it in action, and like nearly every other tool and machine that dates back to when steam was still in use on the Sierra, we still use it to this day
Well, Barry totally has me respect, for allowing you into his home to let you film this masterpiece. Hopefully, he'll have you back, so that you can do a bit more in depth to the track. So again, thank you Barry and to you Hyce, for showing us.
That is quite the layout indeed. I'd imagine that would be a good little piece of heaven to have and enjoy. Thank you for sharing this, and than Barry for giving the opportunity for you to bring to everyone else, such pleasure of visual delights.
Hyce, Thanks so much for posting this incredible layout. It would seem impossible to make models with such detail all in one lifetime. The details are very impressive. Very realistic which is as it should be. All just fun - well, a awful lot of work as well but I guess he loves it . Hope to see you in Colorado.
There are those who enjoy the hobby of Model Railroading...and then there are those who enjoy the HOBBY of Model Railroading!! Most impressive! Honestly, the closest I've gotten to custom building anything was entertaining the idea of using CAD to make bits and pieces of the D&RG class 47/D&RGW Class T-12 for the criminally under-served HOn3 scale...
