I agree that it is pride, but calling it "mortal" is beyond any of us. We are in sales, not management. AS I UNDERSTAND: Pride is a capital sin - thus, grave. Often/usually considered the 1st grave sin and the basis of all sin. For any sin to be "mortal" - meaning one is damned to Hell if they die without repenting of it - the sin must be of grave matter, been committed with full assent of one's will, and the sin must be done with full knowledge of it being grave matter. We do not know from what circumstances Fauci's apparent pride launched and nurtured to grow into his rejection of Christ. It is clear that rejection of Christ's Church is grave matter also as it is His Mystical Body AND His Vicar and Visible Church which are The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. We must be ever-mindful that it is never a lay-person's place to judge another for mortal sin - that is between God and each of us sinners, ideally in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Yep, he's still Catholic. But that doesn't mean he will automatically go to heaven. Just the opposite. Once you are baptized into the faith you are part of the family, we don't kick you out. He may not get to heaven, because God won't force him in, God won't require it, just as we can't force our siblings to be great people, many aren't. Many will walk away. Yes, and as a Catholic myself, I see little to no difference between many Catholics who attend Church and atheists. The reality, I'm sad to say, is that many people attend Church for a Sunday exercise only, not to truly go forth and live the faith life.. The Church is becoming irrelevant and should begin looking inward.

What I often need to remind myself is what St. Paul teaches that our true enemies are not of human flesh but the principalities and powers of darkness, and that the Lord sees deep spiritual poverty in those who have hurt others, calling us to see that as well.
