Abby Stein's Name Change ceremony at Romemu, Shabbat (Saturday) morning, June 4th, 2016, in New York City.
In the Jewish culture and traditions, new born girls are given their names on Saturday morning during services. Abby Stein, a Transgender woman who grew up in a Hasidic community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY, celebrate her (MtF) transition in a public ceremony at Romemu, a Jewish Renewal Community on NYC's Upper West Side. The emotional ceremony included a transition ritual in which Abby made a blessing "המעביר עוברים" - Blessed the source that helps these who transition - Then walked up to the podium where she got her Hebrew name "Avigail Chava". Then she spoke for a few minutes, followed by the Torah service and dancing.

The message is clear that every human being no matter how, where, and who, can find a loving and embracing community, and celebrate breaking tradition within tradition!
