I found this fascinating! As a white South African who lived through apartheid, I have been struck by the phenomenon of a Christian based conservatism that seems to undergird both the Christian Nationalism of apartheid and the Maga movement. The adherents of both seem often (but not always) to be culturally/politically connected to their "faith" but not necessarily true believers if the gospel in an evangelical sense. This can produce a brand if Christianity that is cultural and can be very harsh and oppressive.
Exactly why the founding fathers of this country thought it was important for a separation of church and state. The memories of Europe were still fresh.
I am an Evangelical Christian. Have been for 45 years. I used to go to church regularly, but I had to quit because the church I was attending was full of Trump supporters. So bad it was that one member called me "ignorant" in front of a half dozen other guys at the men's Bible study because I told them I didn't support Trump.

Thank you, both of you! I have that book on my desk, and will soon read it with great interest. In a Bulvark-program Alberta explained the MAGA-movement with this sentence: "It's prophecy driven!" Since evangelicals are used to prophecies, not only from the Bible, but from people saying prophecies in the congregation or on TV, like "Trump will get a second term", "Trump is God's chosen vessel" - like Esther, Kyros or David in the Bible, or "Corona will disappear before Easter" etc., they are easily seduced. Many evangelicals had their favorite Christian programs before Trump, and they trusted the preachers/prophets. Therefore they didn't think critically when those well-known figures promoted Trump's presidency. Because of the built-in trust, they continue to this day to believe their narratives.
Honestly not shocking to those like myself that have for many years entered into religious debates in online forums long before Trump's "ascendancy" and his capitalization of grievances to "perceived" threats.

I hate admit this, but I considered myself an evangelical and went to an evangelical church until 2016 when they passed out pamphlets of election candidates with a star next to trump. I quit the church, and now I am definitely NOT an evangelical. They are horribly leading their sheep astray. I love Jesus and humanity and that’s why I had to draw the line.
