The peanuts characters were used in Ford commercials for several years before this wonderful story. I had numerous Peanuts books that I loved reading, at the time of the special I was only 10 in the 5th grade. I remember watching it on our 19” color admiral TV. It was wonderful, and unlike anything scene before. The music played through my head. In the 60s,Christianity, Christmas and Jesus Birth was a common strong theme. TV didn’t hit you over the head with it, but most TV series had a Christmas episode, and networks produced numerous specials. The spirit was strong and embraced by all… this is from San Francisco… not the Bible Belt, but a diverse community that recognized the Christmas Spirit. Even from my non Christian friends.

Sorry for the error about them not being animated before! Someone else already pointed out that they were used in advertising prior to this special. I hope you enjoyed the special all those years ago and continue to enjoy it each year. It's one of the only specials I make a point in seeing each year.

Guaraldi's stuff for this program was fantastic. Today it's become part of the soundtrack for the holiday season. I'm glad that something unorthodox was chosen for the music in A Charlie Brown Christmas. Plus, a lot of it is good music _any_ time of the year ... I mean, who doesn't want to start movin' and groovin' when they hear the tune "Christmas is Coming"? And "Skating" is just lovely in general-- although it's lilting melody conjures up mental visions of snowflakes dancing in the wind. Thanks. And Merry Christmas!

I wholeheartedly agree! When the Christmas season rolls around, one of the first songs that comes to my mind is "O Tannenbaum" since it's the first song on the Christmas album. I love his music on this special - I think he did a lot of good for the Peanuts franchise. Perhaps someday I'll make a deep dive video on Vince Guaraldi's music! Merry Christmas to you too!

"The music doesn't feel traditionally Christmas-y." All this special did was RE-WRITE what was Christmas-y and give us what became some of the most famous Christmas music of all-time.
@CartoonCade
@CartoonCade Год назад
Oh, I definitely agree! When I said that, I didn't say it as a negative to detract from the special. I hope you didn't see that as a negative from me! I love the Vince Guaraldi Trio's music. You're definitely right, it was able to redefine what Christmas music could be. It's just that at the time, it was one of the elements that caused those who worked on it, as well as the CBS executives, to think negatively of it.

Hi everyone! When I find errors and mistakes, I'll post them here. I aim to provide as close to a perfect product as I can, but I'm only human. The biggest mistake I fan find as of now is that Ed Levitt's name is incorrectly spelled as "Ed Leavitt" in the video. My apologies to the Levitt family! Another mistake is that according to user jb888888888, the Peanuts characters appeared in animated commercials prior to "A Charlie Brown Christmas", meaning that I was incorrect in thinking that the animated TV debut of the characters was with this special.

As I was born in 1959, I was around the same age as the Peanuts gang when this show aired. It was also a bittersweet year (and era). The Vietnam War was widening (the news was filled with bad news from a far off battlefield), and if you were like me with an older brother in the military, Christmas was wonderful and scary. Still, at the age of 63, these days, Christmas means to me a time of nostalgia and reflection. My mind drifts back to the days of "A Charlie Brown's Christmas" and "The Grinch," the toys, the family, hope and goodwill.

The most revolutionary thing was sweeping away Aluminum Christmas trees, which were replaced by "The Charlie Brown Christmas Tree.."
@CartoonCade
@CartoonCade Год назад
I was blown away when I found out that aluminum trees were a real thing! Not only that, I'm kinda glad that they died out. Commercialism is one thing when it comes to Christmas, but even commercializing the concept of a CHRISTMAS TREE seems a bit too far to me.
@jb888888888
@jb888888888 Год назад
Back in the 1980s I had a friend whose parents had an aluminum Christmas tree. It wasn't like the ones we see in A CB Christmas. It was a small tabletop tree like Cade's, except it was silver colored, as if it was made out of tinsel.

Cade, Thanks for your thoughtful video. "A Charlie Brown Christmas" is also my absolute favorite Christmas special of all (and the Grinch is in my #2 spot), because this special dared to actually quote the Holy Bible, the Gospel of Luke in particular. I watch it every December, without fail, and have been since I was a little boy back in the early '70's, back when you had to check the TV listings to see when it would be broadcast, because VCR's were barely on the market (and only the uber wealthy could afford them). The special was first released the same year I was born. But despite my many viewings, for years, I missed the most profound detail... When Linus delivers his ending soliloquy, he drops his blanket. His "security blanket." The thing he cherishes so dearly. This symbolic imagery tells us that we should have no fear in letting go of this world in order to embrace the Truth that Christ bestows on all humanity. Thanks again and have a truly Blessed Christmas. Paul

I'd guess that Boris Karloff got paid a whoooole lot more for doing _Grinch_ than all the child actors in _A Charlie Brown Christmas_ combined. That would have driven _Grinch's_ budget way up. Plus Thurl Ravenscroft.
@CartoonCade
@CartoonCade Год назад
That's a fair point. I often wonder how Boris Karloff got involved in the Grinch special in the first place? I can't seem to find much info on that online.

I don't know what it is about that scene at 8:35, but something about Charlie Brown's expression looking up at the dog house feels terrible. It's this level of dread on his face that makes me bad for him. Him holding his tree just adds to it
@CartoonCade

Oh, I agree! It's almost like there's some emphasis on the juxtaposition between this lavish, pimped-out doghouse and a sickly, small wooden tree.

I agree! There's not much about the special that dates it - it remains timeless, really, aside from the aspect ratio it was produced in and the technique of animation used back then. When Ed Levitt said that it would run for 100 years, he must've known how much of a masterpiece it truly was.

It is a work of art. The use of real children to voice the characters is so brilliant. The stumbles make it so real....the true meaning of art is authenticity. A Charlie Brown Christmas is going to live on forever . It is TV's answer to Van Gogh's Starry Night ...check out that sky.
