When talking about Philosophy with Steve, you should always remember the following: the goal posts are on wheels!

I've seen several interviews with Steve Donoghue and others now, but I think this is easily the best I've seen so far! Jared is intelligent, articulate, widely and deeply read, and to similar degrees as Steve is. As such, the conversation wasn't as one sided as the other conversations that Steve has been involved in. It was much more of a mutual meeting of minds without it becoming a mundane melding of minds. Thanks, gents! 😊

Great conversation! I have to agree with Jared in that if you like a philosopher, they aren't one anymore. I was always taught that Erasmus was a religious philosopher same as St. Augustine.

Jared thank you for engaging Steve’s opinion on philosophy. He usually focuses on continental philosophy for his critiques but there is a good set of philosophers like.Hume, Russel, Frege who were looking at the foundations of causal and mathematical reasoning. Their arguments were never based on possible equivocation.of.meaning of concepts for their arguments to go through.Seldom if ever squishy in their reasoning ( I sometimes gave Quine a side-eye for a bit of breezy arguments) In analytic philosophy ,which I think Steve doesn’t consider, (he’d be right to say it can be tedious and not literary) being able to recognize premises and argue for or against is one requirement. for critical reading, A study of the process of engaging with philosophical reasoning is a good grounding for critical reading in general. Very much enjoyed your discussions with Steve.

Orwell has my respect since I had a brutal, abusive father. Once I left home I eventually healed, but do I ever have a suspicion of authority and what I call " mind capturers" , those who want to tell you what to think.Great video guys. I have a Onyx Boox and I can split screen it and write on the right and read on the left. It is the size of the Kindle Scribe. The notes can be attached to the book, and can be called up at will. The cover has a blue tooth keyboard or you can handwrite and convert to text.

Steve, wonderful conversation with Jared, thank you. Interested on your thoughts on Alan Furst and if you have a favorite by him? Am ALSO loving le Carre this month but immensely enjoyed Furst's Dark Star and Midnight in Europe.

Steve often says to get a background to a difficult author look up Wikipedia. Here is an abstract from the Erasmus entry : "Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus was a Dutch Christian humanist, Catholic theologian, educationalist, satirist and philosopher". I think Jared can rest his case, but I'm sure Steve will have a come-back.. This video had me giggling out loud.

The phrase "seeing through rose-coloured spectacles" says it all about the romance of books. I love books, but it's the content.

Hey Steve! Can you go into more detail on your thoughts on the discussed work, How to Read a Book? Seemed like you're not a big fan of the "value extraction" presented in it - anything else to add to that thought? Thanks! Big fan
