A cheap $5 dollar vintage telelens, how good or how bad is it? [Accura 300mm f5.5]

So I was able to pick up this 300mm lens for less than €5 euro and figured I should give it a try. My expectations of this lens were very low, and after testing it I still don't know what to think of it. It's not terrible, but also far from good. What are your thoughts on this cheap old telelens?
This M42 lens is made by Sankor and also known as: Admiral, Accura Diamatic, Optomax, Mayfair Sankor, Super Carenar.
Video is shot on a fullframe Sony A7 III in 4k 3840 x 2160
(I already sold the lens because I prefer my Super Takumar 200mm for tele-lens purposes)

I liked the footage you shot in the park with the cyclists - the extremely vintage look of that lens worked well for those clips. I don't think I'd want to use that lens for stills though, the washed out colours and lack of modern lens sharpness would annoy me. I'm glad it had a tripod mount - I could do with that on my Chinon 200mm, because when it's fitted to one of my Lumix GX80s it's really difficult to keep it still if there's any sort of wind (the tripod mount on the GX80 is terrible - really badly located on the bottom of the camera, causing lots of movement).

The washed out colors and lack of sharpness was the reason why I sold this lens. I don't often use a tele-lens, and when I need to I prefer my 200mm Takumar. The tripod mount is a nice plus and actually well needed since this thing weighs close to 1kg. At 300mm every little shake of the tripod is very annoying indeed, so I understand your pain with the 200mm Chinon on the GX80.

@@ohjajohh I don't blame you for selling it - I probably still have some old long lenses like that which I haven't even bothered to get out of storage because they were never much good in the first place. It was fun to see all the same.

I like it . Kinda soft in my opinion . But useful for its purpose plus for 5 bucks how could you ever go wrong . I like the build of it . Looks like it will be heavy .

Yeah it's kinda soft and the colors are a bit washed out, but for the price it's a well-built heavy lens.

I know I've already seen both the font used on the engravings and the shape of the lens itself, but I can't pinpoint on which other lenses. Maybe Petri and Chinon? Anyways, it might not be a jack-of-all-trades, but it has a distinctive look that can be used creatively ;)

The Petri font seems very similar indeed. There is an old thread about this lens on Mflenses forum. According to people there it's made my Sankor.

Back then there were so many manufacturers in Japan, producing for dozens of brands, some exported in different nations under different brands... it's quite a mess! XD But weird third party lenses like this are always fun to try out!

@ohjajohh
@ohjajohh 2 года назад

@ohjajohh
@ohjajohh 2 года назад
@@JeroenCoelen De enige simpele vuistregel is dat als de lens een schroefdraad heeft, het een M42 lens is. De andere lenstypes ken ik ook niet uit mijn hoofd. Ik heb zelfs geen andere lenzen dan M42 :)
