It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of religion, it was the age of atheism. It was the age of faith and then the age of reason. Thomas Browne lived in a transformative period in history when the world was shifting from the age of faith to the new age of enlightenment and reason. Thomas Browne's Religio Medici is an epic protestant christian apology defending the faith of his religion. Thomas Browne is witty and has a writing style that is unique and playful. For this reason, Charles Elliott seems to have thought of adding Thomas Browne to the Harvard Classics series and allowing us to experience a writer we may not have sought out on our own. I hope you enjoy my take on the Religio Medici.

It's funny to think that there's like 107 more episodes left lol... I'm waiting for the next every time!

It is crazy to think how many more. I drastically underestimated how fast I could get these out. The reading is quick but the script outlining, shooting and editing takes longer than I planned. I expect it will be close to 250 videos altogether if I keep breaking it up like I have been. We will get there.... some year. Thanks so much for watching my friend!

This was so well done. From the highlights you brought out to the history and context you added to the fair handed way that you treated his arguments you are getting very good at this format and I am enjoying this series tremendously. The conviction grows stronger than I should purchase the set.

Thanks Ryan! I have learned a lot making these videos. Going through the editing process and seeing how dumb you sound in some areas and then what you need to fix in the next video has been a great process. Anxious to see where I am finally at once I complete volume 50. I figure it will be around 400+ videos by that point. Hope all has been well my friend and thanks for watching!

#6:12 very deep quote there, it reminds me of the short story of Al Ghazali titled the allegory of the pen, very short paragraph read, not more than a few minutes but hes showing how a devotee sets out on the path of reason without knowing its existence beforehand, than at the end, reason and faith were merge together in a brilliant manner

Matthew 22:37 _Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’_ For me the faith and reason part falls easy. I am a rather intelectual man. And my faith is a logical consequence of my reason as well as a few experiences. I do struggle with the passion part of it. But I'm also aware that passion doesn't have to look the same for every person.

11:11 one of the great minds, the great poet Imam Busiri says regarding this quote about sins as infant usually makes the sins stick with us even as adults due to reputation he said in his poem - the burda that: " Do not aim to break the desires by plunging further into sin, The glutton's greed is only increased by [the sight of] food The self is like an infant, if you neglect its proper care, It will grow up still loving to suckle; but once you wean it, it will be weaned"

Thanks Rob, your videos are excellent. This one especially hit home as I have watched my mainline Protestant church self-destruct over liberal theology and cultural relativism in an effort to be more reasonable and attractive to post-modern audiences. It didn’t work. Thanks again and I look forward to your future videos, Mike, aka, Siegfried.

I have seen that as well in many of the ones around where I live. I understand having to adapt to the times but there are ways to do it in which I think are more health and effective than others. You can not trade in morals to get a larger congregation without a negative impact. Thanks for watching my friend and stay blessed!

It is fascinating how Philosophy seems to move about professions at different times. In the Arab Golden Age most were philosopher physicians (not unlike brown). In the early Greek it seems that many were astronomers or mathematicians. In Roman times, it was orators and statesmen. In the Scholastic Europe it was priests and abbots. In the enlightenment period, many had patrons as though they were artists but their art being philosophy. I guess philosophers, save for Diogenes, still need to pay for clothes. Fantastic review. The quotes make me want to read this primarily for the beautiful language!

Very true. Even philosophers need to eat. I think that is ironic as well. Many would start to study law and make their living that was as well.

Excellent video! I like Browne's closing statement. We all have passion, faith, and reason. What does it mean to properly balance them? Does it mean we should allow each to steer us one-third of the time? Does it mean that one should lead and the others follow? Does the answer depend on the circumstances? I look forward to watching your video on Paradise Lost. It's the highlight of the series for me so far. I'm still stuck on Emerson's volume.

Love the series! Keep it up. How do you plan to break up the fifth volume? Obviously Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes deserve their own videos. For the shorter works, I'm planning to treat them as their own "book". Some collections of these short poems are called "The Minor Poems."

8:28 Faith, passion, and reason all in balance? What does that make me think of? Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. No doubt Sir Thomas Brown was familiar with Aristotle's Rhetoric.
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 5 месяцев назад
I need to learn more about those three concepts and I must say I am not very well versed in Aristotle and sadly the Harvard classics does not include any of his works. Going to have to venture into his on my own eventually. Browne seems to have been very well read. You can tell by all the references that he had a very good grasp of history.
@klosnj11
@klosnj11 5 месяцев назад
@@The_Cause I haven't read any Aristotle myself either, but lordy lordy do people refrence him a lot. The Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are his three ways of being persuasive; appeal to the authority (faith in this parallel), appeal to the reason, and appeal to emotion (passion). If society is to be guided by a balance of faith, reason, and passion, that means that society is guided by that which is persuasive; seems to check out if you ask me.

the middle of this video reminds me of what I heard someone say about how some people give up on faith, reason, and passion... and then turn to productivity for salvation "I don't understand so I have to have faith" the bit about age - that sounds kinda like fix your crap in your 20s before it becomes your personality lol highly efficient government... where is he going with this xD sounds insane? did it become intimidating? outran the bug

Faith needs to be based in Fact and then Feelings and Passions are then produced -the Facts that Faith are built upon are the question (what are your building materials?) until the Enlightenment it was Scripture - Scripture used properly builds a charitable life and thoughts of your proper place in this magnificent universe - use improperly leads to bloody landscapes; to be naturalistic to an extreme as you stated can be quite damning, and leads to bloody landscapes with a dull soundtrack - however, a Browne states that the created world shows the evidence of that God that created it therefor this level of naturalism should not be discarded but used for its proper purpose; to be ruled by Feeling and Passion leads to incorrect Faith and Facts and usually bloody landscapes with a nice soundtrack. Browne seemed to be living a continual struggle in Romans Chapter 7 - his thoughts and conflicts seem to reside there. The wisest man stated, after contemplating everything he could: Ecc 1:3-11 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? [One] generation passeth away, and [another] generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea [is] not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. All things [are] full of labour; man cannot utter [it]: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which shall be done: and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun. Is there [any] thing whereof it may be said, See, this [is] new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us [There is] no remembrance of former [things]; neither shall there be [any] remembrance of [things] that are to come with [those] that shall come after. and in the end of the book stated: Ecc 12:13-14 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether [it be] good, or whether [it be] evil. As well, the Apostle John wrote, after seeing the throne room of God, and the magnificence of it all: Rev 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. FYI "charity" especially during Browne's time would have been a synonym for "love" (read 1 Corinthians 13) Wyclif used "charity" translating from the Vulgate to English - Tyndale used "love" translating from Greek in every spot the Vulgate had "charity" in order to move from the the high church terms - this was retained in the English Bibles up until the King James when the more ecclesiastical term "charity" was reinstituted, among others.
