John Milton is most famous for his epic poem "Paradise Lost" but he is also well known for his prose and other poetry that he wrote throughout his life. Sometimes involved in controvery and other times secluded in a hamlet composing verse and rhyme Milton would become one of the greatest writers in English history. He lived in the age of Shakespeare and Francis Bacon and these poetic and chaotic times would provide Milton with the energy and perspective needed to change the course of history in terms of English writing. I hope you enjoy these poems of Milton that were selected to be in the Harvard Classics.

Well I truly appreciate the kind words. I am most definitely green when it comes to poetry. Milton has allowed me appreciate poetry in a complete new light. I kind of feel I have missed out on a great form of writing and taken it for granted. Truly appreciate you watching and stay blessed my friend! Just curious, what is your favorite poem or poet?

Woe, what a ride. A Ghost Ship washed up on a Florida beach last week Thankfully, the occupants were safely rescued from hurricane Alberto but sadly had to abandon their vessel in the process. Authorities were able to reconnect the 😅 "Happy Flotsam" with its owner. No pirates there.

Last five lines from Milton p. 12 found on top of page 13: wait... the old Apollo's voice comes from a female snake at delphos and his breath smells of rot ?!? Woe, I did not know that. Seems fairly reasonable 😅 then for Socrates to be recognized as the wisest from the snake's breath, that's definitely an insult. A joke. (haha, just kidding) Ooph, what a stink. If snakes smell with their tongue, I almost feel sorry for the creature. God must have been really mad that day. If something like that happened to my science project I would not have been that nice. No doubt about it. In my universe, there would be no snakes anywhere ever. Flip side: gods of the Nile page 14: ****, a Falcon and a dead dog. 🤔 I did not know that. Eventually some poor devil named Osiris who couldn't do anything useful in the upper world atleast managed to kick the dead dog out of the way and set himself up as boss in the underworld. Better late than never.

My son is reading Paradise Lost for his freshman literature class, and I had made a goal to read all his literature this year with him (except the ones I've already read). So thank you for this introduction to Milton's poetry. I've been wanting to read Paradise Lost for a really long time, so I'm glad I'm finally being prodded to pick it up!

That’s awesome that they are reading it as Freshmen. I know we did not touch anything close to Milton as a Freshman. I have been looking forward to it as well. It is referenced so much in other books I have read that I feel it is a cornerstone book that needs to be read. I am anxious to hear your thoughts on it once you complete it. Should be a good read. Truly appreciate you tuning in and stay blessed!

Paradise lost is a good one, Adam Walker on RU-vid has some free lecture videos since he did a series on paradise lost recently. Of course you have Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and the Roman poets Virgil and Ovid. When I read the first page of Metamorphosis by Ovid I was hooked. Would highly recommend it. For me personally it’s my second greatest book of all time, the first being Moby Dick. Ovid is a classic who inspired the other poets like Dante, Chaucer, Shakespeare etc. Also for the theology side would recommend John Newtons-Olney Hymns, it’s free online. Some beautiful biblical poetry with spiritual wisdom and encouragement for the believer. Great video, and God bless

I am really looking forward to Paradise Lost. I have not heard of Ovid sadly so I will put him down as n my list to look up. I found Adam’s channel a week or so back. Rob, Paradise Lost had been on my TBR list since my early 20s. I just finished it last week just in time for my 70th BD! (I set a goal of a book a day-there are 12 books- but on some days I read several books as I got caught up in the beauty and profundity of Milton’s verse). The best advice I can give is READ IT OUT LOUD. If Homer makes us hearers of the word and Virgil makes us readers of the word-then Milton makes us speakers of the word! I also recommend making sure to get access to an annotated edition. I did very well with the Biblical and Aeneid references, but there were so many references to other classical mythological stories and characters that I would have missed without annotations. Something else that’s fascinating about PL is its unorthodox theological concepts. For example, Milton’s Arianism theology is heavily present in the relation of The Father and The Son. Also, Adam and Eve are having sex BEFORE the fall! After the Fall, lust and shame are introduced. I’d describe Milton’s as a non-conforming Non-Conformist! Anyhow, Rob, thanks SO MUCH for these outstanding videos! I look forward to your upcoming journeys through the classics! Mike

Well you have me itching to crack it open. Working on the last video for the poems and hopefully starting to read Paradise Lost towards the end of the week. Thanks for your insight on the annotations as I may pick one up before I start reading. I have not read Aeneid yet so I may struggle with any reference to that book. Are you reading through the entire series as well or just ones you find interesting? Thanks so much for watching and stay blessed my friend!
@siegfriedderheld7806

Rob, I read through it and struggled with the first two books (chapters) as Milton’s prosody and syntax seemed very strange (that’s why I recommend reading it out loud). That said, I’d describe the first 5 books as Satan’s Story. His character is so deeply developed, then Adam’s character is developed. The last fully developed character is Eve. The Fall itself (Books 8 and 9) and the consequences for Adam and Eve are visceral-not cardboard Sunday School cutouts. I buddy read The Aeneid over a month with a book tube friend. We’re beginning The Brothers Karamazov next week. For my men’s book club, I just finished CS Lewis’s Overcome by Joy (true fully not my favorite read.). If you’re ever interested in buddy reading from the classics, let me know. You can choose, we’ll set up a Zoom, have some coffee, and discuss. God’s peace be with you Rob. I greatly appreciate your channel. Mike

Dryden’s Aeneid lit my fire! I didn’t care much for poetry until I read that. A whole new world opened up to me, and I now LOVE poetry. You are exactly right about the need to “digest it”. I think that’s why most people won’t read the poetry classics. It takes time. You really do have to slow yourself down. A hard thing for our impatient generation!
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 4 месяца назад
Yes indeed! Listening to books on 1.5x and skimming work emails has trained me to just churn through things quickly. Slowing down was needed for me to understand it more completely. I am really looking forward to reading Aeneid. It’s one of those books I have heard so much about but know nothing of. It’s a few volumes away in the Harvard Classics but we will get there soon. Thanks so much for watching and stay blessed.

Always nice to see a new post, also I did end up picking up a bag of the Papua New Guinea and I would definitely say it is an incredible roast, I will definitely be trying the other roasts as well after that and would highly suggest anybody interested good coffee to give Cedar Ota to give it a try. I recently read through both Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained on my current binge through the epics of history, and am now on The Aeneid(I get that's sort of out of historical order but I was pretty excited to read Paradise Lost). Paradise definitely was a bit difficult as a casual reader. There is an incredible proficiency on Milton's part and sometimes it did go over my head with the density of the verse at times. However, and I do hope that others that are just reading them for the first time can appreciate this on some level as well, this gave me a strong incentive to return to the poems after I have read more poetry and see them differently because Milton clearly was taking inspiration from many places in prose and poetry, and it would take a lifetime long as his to find every one of them. A lot of the beauty of these works that have stood the test of time is that they aren't going anywhere and it gives us some breathing room to really enjoy them throughout different points in our lives and see them differently as we change and grow. Even as somebody with no strong religious ties the poetry of both really did just bring me in and it truly speaks to his quality as a writer, he clearly had amazing control over his choice in words and the structure of language. I am excited to hear the thoughts of anybody who is coming up to or has previously gone through Milton either in the classics or just isolated like I did.

Listening to read it sounds like a great idea, I might do that myself just so I can have a bit more of the cadence down and it also is just a good chance to pick up on some finer details now that I understand more of the movement and style of the work. I do so love Milton, and have read a fair portion of Paradise Lost. I live in a town named after John Milton, and was astounded to find that the local library had not a single writing by him, the towns very namesake! I made mention of this to the librarian (a gentle chiding) which seemed to have an effect because now they have several selections by Milton, along with some other missing classics. Love the video. Poetry seems a lost artform. From Dickinson to Shelly (my favorite) to Byron, there is so much good poetry that my generation just doesn't know! Yet they can sing along to a hundred different rap artists and know the words?

I can relate not being a poetry person. I struggle with porn and thanks to someone I noticed that this is because of a lack of art in my life and a mismanagement of dopamine. Now I'm currently trying to figure out how to change those two things. At the same time I try to get my RU-vid habits under control, as they spiraled out of control. By the way all I know of you as a person is through those classics videos. If you ever feel bad remember that to some people you are a thoughtful person who is calming to listen to. I'm aware that there are other facets to you as a person. After all many people wouldn't think of me as a guy who is a weirdo on the internet watching porn and being addicted to RU-vid. But we shouldn't define ourselves though the things which annoy us the most. If we only look at our dark side and at the things which we could improve on, then we ignore and take for granted our good sides. But I guess this is something I say to myself more than I say it to you.
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 4 месяца назад
I like your perspective here. I think we all as humans struggle with some form of addiction throughout life. Different aspects of life tempt people differently. I never thought about the beauty side of it as most people bring up just the dopamine side of it. There are milestones in life that have really broken some of these habits for me and one big one was having children. I feel I was much more selfish with my time and with all the free time I had I did not utilize my time in a productive manner. But it’s also created many more challenges that I now struggle with. Still looking for the solution myself. Thanks so much for watching and just keep focusing on the course. We will get there brother!

Excellent video! For me, "On the Death of a Fair Infant" was the most memorable poem from Milton's early years. I think the cold north wind, Boreas, "unhoused" the infant's soul. I agree that poetry is meant to be read aloud. I find that the rhythm adds weight and force to the words. The images become more vivid to me when I read poetry aloud. I had to look up many of the literary and mythological allusions while reading Milton. I used a website maintained by Dartmouth called the John Milton Reading Room, which has extensive notes about the allusions.

religion and the Bible were very central things for those generations - writers, leaders, royalty, intellectuals, scholars so steeped in these eternal thoughts and words, no better theme to properly cultivate minds. Poetry can be such a struggle (my daughter writes it without the mind steeped in eternal words - and it can be a struggle), but you handled this well. side note: Have you considered doing a check in/status update video on the affect on your brain this 5' bookshelf education is providing? maybe every few volumes?
