A closer look at... Mego Planet of the Apes figures

Back in the heyday of Apes mania toy company Mego produced a range of 8" action figures based on the film series. Those figures weren't best known for their accuracy to their onscreen counter parts. Fast forward to today and the newly relaunched Mego has picked up where they left off, reissuing the old favourites but also tweaking some of their past releases with updated sculpts and costumes and even a few new characters...

Man, something about the kitsch and camp charm of Mego just does it for me. I never gave them any mind before but having bought the Creature From the Black Lagoon figure on a whim I became completely charmed by them. I can see why they had their day in the sun back in the 70s. As much as I love a higher end, more likeness and detail oriented sculpt on a figure, I find myself gravitating more towards the offbeat, vintage, and retro look of older toylines.

Yeah totally agree - there's something wonderfully fun and child-like about them that's very endearing

Casual Crafter, Have you seen what they look like? Are they better than mine? I hope it was I that inspired or shamed, either one works, to do better..

Owning the sideshow series and appreciating their attention to screen detail, it was nice to return to Mego's versions of the Apes characters for their pure charm and simplicity. I have all five reviewed here on display in my "escape" room.

Zaius did wear an outfit similar to the Mego version in the movie. The color is wrong, but if you go to the final act on the beach he was wearing a jacket similar to the Mego one.

We live in an age that sorely lacks context to history. Its like someone today looking at a Model T and complaining why it doesn't have a more aerodynamic body and air conditioning. The late 60's and early 70's was the dawn of actions figures as we have come to call them today. Before Mego, companies were making their own licensed characters like GI Joe, Big Jim, and Johnny West. And while Ideal did briefly jump into outside licensing with Captain Action, they still tried to push their character over the licensed heroes. So it wasn't until Mego came on the scene that the public got their first truly licensed figures from television and movie characters. The very fact that we had them were reasons to do back flips. So some latitude please on using todays standards to evaluate what was actually a market changing business model that is standard practice today. These are intended to pay homage to those original creations. Collecting what amounts to antique figures and their reproductions should have a universal understanding regarding intent. I fell in love with Frankenstein from 1931 in the 60's and 70's. I didn't have to be born in that era to appreciate the achievements that were evident in watching it. Mego gave birth to what you take for granted today. There's wasn't a kid around back then that remotely critiqued toys like you do today and no adults were buying them for themselves either. So it helps to understand the times and sensibilities of the audience it was aimed for.

Good day Ode2toy, The new soldier ape is not really a brand new sculpt. It's modeled after the No helmet figure they called General Ursus. It's the one with the black head and face with the red nose flairs and red mouth.

Also the new Ursus head isn’t a brand new sculpt. It’s the same sculpt as the old one (albeit a little less sharp) bit with a new (aside from the eyes) more accurate paint scheme. Interestingly, the original 70’s Ursus headsculpt was based on the Addar Ursus model kit.

Thats not an old sculpt on the soildier. It was urko/ursus head. Btw Zaius did wear that outfit in the last appearance. Unfortunately, i wish it was the right color. Thats why I use rit dye lol. Hope you have a great week ahead.

Oh good lord! I have all the original releases of this line. I was happy enough with them when I was a kid, but grew to dislike them when older. But now I'm bloody old I have a fondness for them again! LOL I wish the re releases had better head sculpt though. There's no excuse not to imo. My absolute favs of Ape figs was the Sideshow line. I have a fair number of them and thought they worked very well.

The soldier ape sculpt is a reuse of the original. Just repainted.
@hulksmash8159

The head sculpt on the Soldier Ape in not new, but a reuse of an old figure from the original line. If you are going to make a video on something it would be wise to study what you are reviewing, otherwise you just pass along false information.
