I feel like so many people miss the meaning of Love - Bartholomew is supposed to be Jesus returning in an unexpected form. His death had to happen, because Jesus was killed by the people he came to save. And you didn't mention this crucial theme, nor is anyone in the comments! I feel like we watched completely different edits or something!
I interpreted this episode as something ironic. The townspeople love Jesus so much, the moment Orel finds happiness in something else, they kill it the same way the romans killed Jesus. They are such fanatics, they killed the second coming of Jesus, *in the name of Jesus.* Bartholomew died for Moralton's sins, but he could not save them.
Holy Visage is one of my favorites. For me, it's THE episode where Orel starts seeing some cracks in the foundation. Like, he's not quite ready to denounce Moralton and its teachings, but he sees them causing harm and recognizes it for what it is -- unnecessary suffering to another human being and not "God's will" or some such nonsense. I think that's why the suffering had to be so graphic... to show the extremes of the townsfolk's obliviousness and cruelty. Orel is being pulled in two directions and the moment where he acts in accordance with his own beliefs and values, symbolized by pushing Bobblehead Jesus towards the doctor but not forcing it, giving the doctor the tools to fix his situation in the way HE understands through science and medicine without judgement... I dunno man. It struck me as a real turning point for Orel, and that seems to get buried under the complaints about excessive gross-out.
For "Love", the entire point is that the adults are shitty people. That's the entire point of the show, and episodes like "Love" and "The Lord's Prayer" are resolved by the end of the series when Orel realizes the true colors of Moralton.
I didn't know love was less liked. I get it with the town acting jealous of a dog and killing it hurts but it shows how petty they can get when the status quo isn't followed Elemental Orel understandable due to Orel missing obvious answers but the end was pretty good Holy visage while gross it highlights like geniuses the town have zealot like thinking rather than see logic in front of them. Gods chef we never saw the outcome of all those kids being born as I doubt any of those women would terminate them due to being in a highly religious town
@@GlipGlig well people love animals more than people as you grow you become more cynical. That's my guess. Anime uses animal deaths to make someone look extra evil I feel it's perfect as people would probably reject Jesus if he ever came back
@@ivanbluecool I understand you're interpretation, but even if it makes you uncomfortable I'm unsure why someone would dislike it for that fact without at least appreciating it. The whole point of them killing the dog is to reenact the death of Christ & to show that the towns members don't learn from the bible & will only use it when it supports their own beliefs. I mean... if you're uncomfortable with a dog dying on screen to the point where it's one of your lowest ranked episodes why are you even watching this show? Put it this way: Judging "Love" for being bad solely because it's uncomfortable is like ordering a cheeseburger & being offended by getting the cheese on the burger. It's almost like the point in the cheese burger is that it has cheese
@@GlipGlig my guess is these people just hate people but like animals because they don't talk back. Bartholomew was a good lad but his death isn't even the darkest part. Though it's probably just a waste to try and understand how this episode hurts more than seeing alone but i doubt they got that far too. But love not being talked about badly by most reviewers means it not panned as much as gods chef and the other two episodes
I don't think the episode was bad, it did exactly what it was supposed to do and showcased cruelty. It's just hard to watch, like the episode of Courage the Cowardly dog where he gets almost killed by a robot dog that tried to replace him. I skip it because I don't want to feel that particular emotion sometimes.
The dog episodes was one of my favorites!! You forgot to mention that the dog called itself Jesus which makes the episode make more sense. I haven’t even read the Bible but I know that a group of people loved Jesus and a lot of other people didn’t so they killed him. They hated him even though he was a healer and full of love. The episode shows that really well
Honestly the hated episodes are more just hard to watch. They get the reaction they want out of the person watching. I feel like they were *meant* to be hard to watch, and that's okay! It doesn't make them bad!
I've never understood it - Holy Visage is so important!! He actively disobeys Clay and everyone in Moralton and chooses to do the right thing and totally selflessly saves someone! Someone who isn't Christian!!
Personally, I think that ‘God’s Chef’ is a little over-hated. Aside from the deleted scenes, it’s fairly watchable and funny. For ‘Holy Visage’, I wasn’t really disgusted by the gross-out scenes, but that’s probably because the claymation doesn’t really scar me. If this episode was animated like Family Guy or something, then maybe. I also find that ‘Geniusis’ is fairly solid. The Moralton residents turning a primitive caveman into a right-wing radio host is a hilarious angle that I legit didn’t see coming. Though I have to ask: how does Orel find cavemen frozen in a block of ice in the summer in the middle of a midwestern Bible-belt state? I don’t get it.
In my opinion cruelty works best in comedy when the person being cruel is the butt of the joke. Always Sunny is a masterclass in this, managing to make unbelievably cruel scenarios funny by couching the comedy in how absurd and fucked up the people *doing* the cruelty are.
I agree with this sentiment. In my experience, most comedy is derived from catharsis and/or absurdity, but rarely is cruelty itself the main punchline. Call me a snowflake or a Mr Enter if you will, but I find that when pressed, few can explain why they find some types of cruelty funnier than others without revealing something about their own morals and biases. Comedy that punches down will always age like milk, because it asks you to dehumanize whoever it deems ”other”.
I'll firmly defend Love, I think its a fantastic episode. As you mentioned it helps establish early on that the entirety of Moralton is corrupt. These people manipulate religion to their will for the pettiest of reasons with no regard as to how it'll affect anyone around them, putting down a dog out of jealousy. But also it's made very clear Bartholomew is the second coming of christ. His initial introduction has him bark out the name Jesus and he does all sorts of good as well as knowing Bible Lore™️ much more than an average dog. Moralton happily killed the man they supposedly spend their entire lives worshipping just because he was an inconvenience to them. With there being signs throughout the series that God looks harshly on Moralton (as made explicitly clear in that one episode where Orel takes a blood bath and they show all the signs that God is angry with them), I imagine putting down the second coming of christ probably didn't earn them any points. Both a great way to showcase their hypocrisy early and just a genuinely good bit.
The whole point of Love is that Bartholomew is literally the second coming of Jesus. I thought that joke was pretty obvious. He says as much himself. He is able to perform tricks based on bible verses without Orel even having to teach him. He miraculously heals people at the hospital. He has to be put down because he has to be betrayed by one who loved him (Doughy being Judas - Orel says as much - had fun playing with Bartholomew after church) and die for Moralton's sins (LORD know they need it). It was the obvious ending to the episode.
God's chef is the only episode that made me turn the tv off... the unfortunate thing was that it was the first episode I watched so it was years before I watched the show again. I can watch it now but i'd rather not if I can. because of that episode I thought the show might be another mr pickles moment. It's not even the gross out now but it just creeps me out that someone as nice as oral would go around doing that because he's naïve.
i'm not seeing it be mentioned by any of the comments but the point of "love" was that the dog was a jesus allegory. he came into a town full of shitty hypocrites and spread love and joy and was killed for it. it showed that moralton, despite preaching abt loving god, would actually hate jesus if they were alive when he was. so if these citizens of moralton would treat a dog that just existed to make people happy this way, if they were actually confronted by a middle eastern jewish poor carpenter born to a teenage mother that told them about their hypocrisies and sins, they would react w the same murderous vitriol jesus was subjected to in the new testament. i liked the episode a lot actually
I liked Geniuses mainly because it reminded me of Prometheus and Bob, and I have to wonder if they would have circled back to it if the show hadn't been canceled, because it is a good concept.
18:17 Well I think Principal Fakey deserves what was coming to him just like most of the other adults in Moralton(Except Stephanie, Mr. Figurelli, Principal Fakeys Ex, Ex Mrs Papermouth, Ms. Sculptham and Nursula Bendy) because he knew he was in the wrong and tried to believe that Fakey or Bendy was the one who gave him or himself STD's was impossible. Bendy wasn't satisfied with Fakey because she wanted to be treated like a human being as said in Alone but could never do that because her role in Moralton is just stand around and look pretty as said by Dr. Potterswheel in Holy Visage. Fakey just wanted to do whatever he wanted because "he was an adult" which we should all know is the lamest excuse for an adult to tell you when they do something to you that's plain wrong but that's not what I'm talking about. Fakey is horrible and just like everyone else in Moralton wishes for the children to be mindless and repeat the same cycle of Moraltons Manipulation and Bigotry so it stays that way. If the show went on it'd show that this was Moraltons motives the whole time and that no matter what they did america or anyone outside of Moralton couldn't stop them because they wanted to choose this path for their town and would take down anybody down who disagrees with them. Fakey would've avoided all of his actions if he were just: Faithful for his wife, Not be an idiot, Not claim those who have the mind of creativity and free thinking as plain stupid and just not exist at this point.
I’ll admit as a fan of Mr. Enter that the only good thing to come from the original review of Turning Red he did was the memes mocking his 9/11 take and folks mocking the video for how God awful it was. Even when I first saw it, I knew that video sucked. I’m glad John has pretty much disowned the video, acknowledged his mistakes, apologized for it and worked hard to improve with him even making a new review for the film.
tbh as somene who loves the show but isn't super keyed-into the fanbase I had no idea Love and Holy Visage were controversial. To me they were always prime examples of what Season 2 has to offer.
Of the few episodes I think I caught at some point, I think I recall Love slightly, and I kind of assumed it was like a "Modern Day Retelling of the Passion" but with a Dog, so while cruel and dark, I never thought it was a candidate for it being bad...heck, thought it was neat and a bit clever - though at the time, I had no idea what Moral Orel was about other than an odd criticism of "christians", with Orel being like the only good one following the teachings to the letter, even if he mostly came off as a naive kid. (Heck, if the fetching stick looking like a cross wasn't a big giveaway, I don't know what to say.)

A lot of great points in this episode, I was right to be looking forward to it. You were stern on the episodes that had real flaws, but for Holy Visage you were fair, and gave it the review it deserves from a fan of the show. Love is a little upsetting but shows how cruel the town is and how misconstrued their doctrine is. Holy Visage does this again, and very well (I actually like this episode too), and my two least favourite, Elemental Orel and Geniusis are just... meh. Elemental Orel doesn't go anywhere funny, it feels like it's going to and it just... doesn't. I'm also one of the people who thinks Orel is too mean in this episode. And Geniusis just does the "oh look we found the ape man" trope that nearly every cartoon or adult animation has done at some time, and the joke which is supposed to be about closed-mindedness in evangelical radicals just fails to hit. It's just boring, which is honestly worse to me than bad when you expect so much from a series this good. This was fantastic episode, loved hearing your takes!
I liked Geniuses because it actually flips back at the Evolution deniers big time and how Theists have completely deceptive one sided talk shows. My experience with both the Evangelicals and Dawah community. The religious do use their own text as the only argument. I would agree the ending was underwhelming.
Elemental Orel is probably the only episode that made me angry at the show itself. Plenty of times I felt angry at the characters, but it was never the kind of anger that made me want to shut it off. Elemental Orel was the exception. In hindsight it's not so bad that I'd go out of my way to skip it during a rewatch of the show, but good grief the leaps in logic Orel had to make to come to his conclusions were huge, even for him!
"Love" isn't really a bad episode when you take in account that everyone in Moralton (except Moral) are morally corrupt and don't really act out of character. "God's Visage" is just people being ignorant and not trying to help him because they don't realize the reason for the injury was Moral's Jesus bobblehead. "Elemental Moral" kinda just drops stolen church money plot when he discovers his parents are swingers so his out of character persona doesn't bother me that much. However, "Geniuses" is just religion vs. science debate but one side puts their fingers in their ears and doesn't want to listen (which kinda mirrors current events in my opinion). That's why out of the episodes shown, "Geniuses" is the WORST Moral Oral episode in my opinion.
honestly I don't think the series has a bad episode at all - not even God's Chef or Geniusis, which I just find okay. It's honestly remarkable that this show had such consistent quality throughout Also Geniusis has that really hilarious bit about right-wing talk show hosts which kills me everytime
Holy Visage and Geniuses, along with God's Blunders, to me, represent the Religious Right's rejection of science, which makes them three of my favorite episodes.

No the cruelty not being comedy isnt coming from mr.enter. its from shows like family guy and CURRENT spongebob doing it so grossly and over the top. I'd say shows that do it right are shows like iasip and south park. Nice try though 😂😂
Holy Visage is top 5 of season 2 for me. The ending where orel and his dad talk about how to do something without feeling bad is an integral interaction for both characters and really explains the show really well.
love isn't my favourite episode but its definitely not on of my least favourite episodes ,unlike episodes like geniuses, love is an episode that i remember and it gives us an insight on how cruel people of moralton can be. it also makes me feel even worse for Orel making me like his character all the more giving the other even more cruel episodes more meaning.
I feel Love and Holy Visage are unfairly hated Love is cruel, but I always felt it was the first step in Orel learning how terrible Moralton is, and Holy Visage is cruel, but Orel does help him get away at the end, so I feel the cruelty at least pays off. It was actually painful to watch my first time, but I kinda respect it for that.
Love has always been a favorite of mine. I really like the whole 'Jesus comes back and the people, that claim to follow Christ, kill him again' message.
After the events of Love, it would be really appreciated if the entire population of Moralton (except for Orel) gets boarded into a giant dilapidated plane, much like the one from Total Drama World Tour, and they are all shipped away to Alaska. When they arrived, as punishment for contirbuting to the death of Bartholomew for just being a dog, all of the Moralton residents get forced to shovel snow off the Alaskan freeway, while facing frigid temperatures, the occasional semi-trucks occasionally passing by, and the harsh wilderness full of predators like grizzly bears and wolves. Each Moralton character will perish one by one in different ways. (For example, Censordoll gets clawed to death by a bald eagle while she attempted to raid its nests for eggs to eat.) It may be harsh, but since they literally contributed to the death of a dog, they deserve nothing but the harshest of punishments!!!!

I’ve never got why people hated on Elemental Orel, and it comes as a shock to know folks don’t like Love either. Both episodes have what you could call ‘cruel’ aspects and moments but that is what makes up some of the better ‘lessons’ from the show. A lot of the time I feel like MO can have a lot to teach us by showing improper teachings of (ironically) Moral High Ground, especially in Elemental Orel. Atleast imo whole point is to be like ‘yeah lol this it totally wrong’
I'm surprised Love is actually disliked, I think the cruelty and pettiness of the adults enhances the moral of the story. I'm a gross out enjoyer but I can NEVER make it out of Holy Visage without squirming, wincing and cringing. The wound becoming infected really sets me off bleghh. I often forget Elemental Orel but it actually _does_ feel kinda bad compared to everything else they've got to offer Geniusis is actually alright imo! I feel like it's more so about shaping someone into a bad faith actor and having him grift (like say modern Joe Rogan, Ben Shapiro or Jordan Peterson)
