A Closer Look: Inside Jayne Wrightsman’s New York City Apartment | Cultured Elegance
Jayne Wrightsman, a revered socialite, philanthropist, and connoisseur of 18th-century French antiques, meticulously curated a captivating collection that graced her lavish abode at 820 Fifth Avenue. Collaborating with the renowned decorator Stephane Boudin, she elevated her already stunning home to new heights of grandeur. Today, let's embark on a tour of the residence belonging to one of the wealthiest American women of the 20th century. She embodied the old money socialite status. Beyond showcasing her exquisite taste, Jayne fostered a close friendship with Jackie Kennedy Onassis, infusing an additional layer of glamour into her extraordinary life. Not only did Jayne and her husband Charles Wrightsman embellish their home, but they also generously contributed countless antiques to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In recognition of their significant donations, galleries at the museum were named after them, cementing their legacy as benefactors of the arts. I love Mrs. Wrightsman’s style. While I in no way can attain the same level of antiques and decorative acquisitions like her, I’ve tried to emulate her style in my own home, so much so that my own brother walked into my home and asked, “What the hell is this a [vulgar F-word] museum. Despite his language, it made me proud!

I worked in the tabletop department at Tiffany & Co. back in the 70's & 80s. Woman and men would come in to purchase the beautiful, china, crystal and silver to furnish their elegant homes. We used to call them the "carriage trade." An era long gone.

I had a close friend whose family lived in a mansion. It absolutely felt like a museum. Every room perfectly decorated, huge living room that dwarfed the grand piano in the corner. The place scared me and I would get lost in it.

Jayne was a statuesque beauty, when she walked into a room, all heads turned male and female! It’s been said conversation briefly stopped awkwardly! Best dressed and very generous/helpful to Jackie in restoring the Whitehouse. They donated many fine pieces!

No. The original has been in The Hague since around 1902. It was once shown around the world in exhibitions but now is not loaned outside The Hague.

Ms. Wrightsman's taste and decor is done with elan. Although I adore her style, I have difficulty with her social persona; more specifically, when Thomas Hoving's wife asked Ms. Wrightsman if she'd like to donate to Phoenix House, (a drug-rehabilitation center,) Jayne replied that she "didn't give to pauper institutions." Considering Jayne Wrightsman's social origins were vulgar, untidy, and humble, she certainly turned into an elitist snob.
