Today I talk about a mistake I make in my photography ... and wonder if you do it as well ...

Haha!! Luckily not, although my A7C took a bit of a beating the other day when I hadn't secured it onto the tripod properly ... it is still going though even though the flippy screen is a little more wobbly than is should be. As always thanks for watching Lance 😁👍

Didn't find the shot at 2:30 busy. Loved the composition and a bit more muted colors due to the lighting. That last photo seems to be in motion and in 3D, so amazing! Great video as always!

2:26, the shot is not busy but the light hitting the subject is not at its best conditions to distinct and redirect the eye there in a pleasing way Nice video !

I know I used the advice from Mark Galer and started using my 3 memory recall settings on my Sony A7rIII.

Agree, too easy to get swept up in the moment - especially for public event/street photography - and have a settings lapse. Discipline is key; histogram helps - use a “standard” group of settings with only a single variable, like ISO or aperture that is adjusted per histogram. Then again, sometimes we’re over-prepared. Going out on “empty” can work, too. Just remember the belt clip😁. IMO image at 2:38 not too busy, but lighting kindda flat. Final image spot on. Too many trees for composition - take an axe in bag.😁 Cheers!

Haha! Imagine that in the next video ... if the composition isn't working, break out your axe!! ... and as a bonus, you'll have firewood to keep warm at night!! 😆 I like that idea of a standard group of settings with only a single variable ... might be an idea for a future video. 🤔 The lighting was kind of flat that day ... when I got that little bit of light on the last scene, I was happy with that, but it did take quite a bit of editing to get there ... Hi Mike, what i usually do is after each session when I get back home. Is putting al my settings back to "a standard setting" adjust the ISO, check the mode, check my standard aperture etc. In the summer I shot mostly insects (is possible flying insects) so then i set it to shutter speed mode and put it already to a fast 1/400 sec and put on my Macro lens. In the other seasons, my preference is landscape so i put it on "Aperture mode" and put on the standard lens.

Happens to the best of us. My main one is I always forget to shut off stabilization when mounted on a tripod / vice versa.

That is one that can give that tiny bit of blur in the shots, I always used to forget to do this when I shot with Canon cameras ... and it is so easy to do. Out of interest, what camera do you shoot with?

What I do on my Sony to help with the settings is to store in the memories on the camera my default settings for landscape, both hand held and tripod. So whenever I want to start I select the starting point settings from the memory and then just adjust if required to the particular requirements of that location. At least this way I am never miles away from good settings. I also store other settings for action, street photography etc. I can't claim this as my own ideas as I got them from Mark Galer's channel (Global Sony imaging ambassador).

I often use one of the self-timer modes when I have the camera on a tripod (to minimize camera shake), then forget to change the drive mode back later. There's nothing quite like missing a spur-of-the-moment shot and being subjected to camera beeps while the timer counts down. I just missed getting a shot of Bigfoot the other day when the beeping scared him away. 🙂

I sometimes shoot with a a7iii but I'm used to Fujis so I'm sometimes like : "How the heck do I do this on a Sony ?!" 😆. Loved all your shots, the colors are so beautiful !

Haha! I know what you mean, I used to shoot with both Canon and Sony, and then Panasonic and Sony and it is a head scratches sometimes ... and also the new sony menu system in the A7iv ... that is like changing to a whole different brand!! Thanks for watching 😁👍

Ha ha, so it's not just me! I've started experimenting instead of reading books and watching videos so I am more aware of settings and I have FINALLY started using manual mode.

Haha! Indeed it isn't!! You can ditch those books ... as long as you keep watching a certain youtubers videos!! 😆👍 That's great to hear. Manual mode is a great function when you have time to dial in your settings. I sometimes go out and shoot just in manual mode if I have been away from the camera for a while, to get back into the photography headspace. I did it in a video a while back ... and it teaches you so much about how the camera works. @@mikesphotography Yes, your video on manual mode is pretty much what I have been doing. One thing you only touch on is depth of field when you open up the aperture to let in enough light. Got a whole new learning curve as my Lumix G5 has died and been serendipitily replaced with a G9 (two pages of instructions for iA mode!!! 🤪).

Thanks Ashwin. L-brackets and flippy screens do not go well together ... if you look at the video at 0:21 you'll see what I have come up with ... I basically have the half cage from Small rig and then I've put a quick release plate from Peak Design on the side and as far forward as possible ... it seems to work for me and I get 99% of the movement with the flippy screen. I've got a comparison video coming really soon between the A7iii and the A7iv, so keep an eye out for that one where I talk about this very thing. As always thanks for watching 😁👍

Another great video Mike --Im struggling with landscape shooting RAW and cant get the images to pop always flat . This video will make me think more about settings and go back to jpegs .

If you're not editing your raw files, then simply shoot in jpg.

Thanks so much Linda! I remember when I first switched to RAW and I struggled for such a long time ... and I also switched back and forth between the two formats. The best bet would be to shoot in both RAW and jpeg, so you have the best of both worlds, then as you develop your editing skills, you will have the option of going back to older images you might like and tweaking them a little. I'm actually planning a lightroom video soon, so hopefully that will help you get into the groove with your editing skills. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Great video. Are you a sony shooter through and through or would you move to nikon for the nikon z9 As for me I shoot with an a1 and yes I get so excited with my surroundings I fo forget to put in my settings sometimes too lol

Thanks very much!! Changing brands is such a hassle. I switched from canon to Panasonic and then back to canon ... And then to Sony, so I'm a bit done with that kind of thing. I'm happy with my setup and will stick with it, slowly building up to better glass and better cameras. Lol. It is so easy to do isn't it. I've started reading out the settings now as I take the shot and this seems to be helping. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I'm sure it depends on the system, but with both Nikon and LUMIX I found if you used the custom save banks the settings would default back to the saved settings when turned off and back on.

This is one of the main reasons I don't use custom settings any more. It is so annoying that they default back to their original settings when switching ... for the principle settings there should be options to have them constantly update to what you last used ...

Not really, if you could set it to change the ones you wanted to, like aperture, shutterspeed or iso and then save the other settings, in my opinion, that would be better as you shoot through the day with ever changing conditions.

I bought 2 capture clips for the 2 backpacks I use. Had this happen last week, had shutter speed at 320ish for some flying Pelicans..had to delete them all after realizing in post the blur. Not the first time, won't be the last I am sure. 🤣

Re photo at 2:30 When I crop out the foreground's golden grasses with my hand the transition to the grey sky is not so polar, keeping a tighter color pallet. It is a beautiful shot either way because the golden color grabs you and stands in for the sun that has been over cast by the fog.

Hi Francesco, Yes I have the A7iv and I haven't had any problems with it overheating ... with landscape photography, it is quite a chilled genre (apart from those fleeting moments of light). Wedding photography on the other hand would be a little more pressured, from the temperature of the venue to the amount of photos and use the camera would get through the day. So I suppose it is dependant on the levels of use.

The other night I was shooting the moon rising. I set my ISO at highest setting because this was my first time doing this kind of shoot. The moon rises fast, so bracketing exposures are very hard, but too high an ISO will produce grain you can't fix.

Moon photography is such an anomaly when it comes to how we all think night and low light photography. Did you find out about the looney 11 rule? In a nutshell, you set your aperture to f11 and then the shutter speed matches the iso, so if you are at 1/100 second, the iso is at 100, if you are shooting at 1/400 the iso goes to 400. I would frame the first shot without the tree and sky bring down to the wall behind the hut and crop the bottom to have the road come out of the bottom left corner - My problem with settings is I normally shoot landscapes- flowers and such but I have been trying to shoot some birds and that is way different in speed and I think birds are best with auto ISO - I use a 2 second timer on my landscapes and one day My wife yelled there is a hawk in the back yard-- I grabbed the camera and came to the patio door and started to take the shot - 2 second timer was on and set for bracketing-- I managed to reset and get one shot of the hawk with it's meal on the lawn but it was crazy for a bit.

Thanks for your thoughts on the composition. It is interesting how the bright sky draws the eye up to the top of the frame a little too much ... I'll definitely try out your idea with the framing. Haha!! It's that camera setting that can help so much with landscape photography but get in the way of the spontaneous photographs. Great to hear you got it sorted before the hawk flew away. I use the C1, C2 and C3 settings for this very reason (5D 4) - one is landscapes with tripod m. lockup and bracketing, other is sports with rapid burst and third is for general photography. Really useful!

Very interesting topic. Let me guess your next topic: “How to avoid forgetting you gears.” ;) For not missing any settings I setup a new habit: I read them out loud like RU-vidrs do (and like you do). And I stick to the process: 1/ Light, 2/ Subject, 3/ Settings. By the way, it continues to be strange not having a final word at the end of your videos. It feels like it’s an error and the video has been cropped.

Haha!! Maybe that should be next week's title and subject! 😆 That's a good habit to build ... it then makes you think about them as you are in the moment. Thanks for the tip!! I know what you mean about the ending ... as a videographer it pains me to edit that way ... but looking at the stats in youtube, it helps build the numbers. In finishing early, it has increased the number op people clicking on the video linked at the end, which in turn promotes my videos to more people over the platform. I spend so much time on these videos that ultimately, if I can't make it sustainable, I'll have to stop making them, so that's the reason why. I hope you understand Gabriel. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I don't believe that first shot is too busy. The trees/bushes frame the road which draws the eye in. Main subject being the road then the house + hill

I feel that the photo shown at 2:27 is distracting to me with the bright sky and a tree at the top part of the frame. Removing those two things in camera or in post by cropping out would make it a more pleasing photograph.

It certainly happens to me as well. Too much in a rush to find the right composition and in the excitement sometimes forget about the settings. If it were possible to take a photo while having no lens on the body it would have happened to me at some point.

You're obviously not selecting the right ones ... I've made quite a few where the sun does break through in all its glory. Persistence is one of the traits you need for landscape photography, and if you're depressed by a few cloudy day videos, then it's probably not the genre for you. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Know the problem well! My solution has been to discipline myself and, after a specialized shot like the Milky Way, to reset my camera to a standard set of parameters that are good if I need to capture something quickly. Also, to avoid leaving things at home, I wear a fishing vest with all my basic “possibles” in the pockets - filters, basic cleaning materials, rain cover, pano rail settings, etc.
