My M48 is my favorite of my collection. It was in OUTSTANDING condition when I got it back in 2010 and it has the smoothest action, trigger. I've mounted an AiM scout scope mount and use it for hunting on a yearly basis. Mausers Rock!!!!
I love the Mauser, there is none better. I have several, a couple I've drilled and tapped for scopes, I know sacrilege, but when you have an abused, neglected bore. I have a few rear sights I've added a round brass farrel and turned them into a peep sight and improved the sight picture considerably and put away the original rear sight for safe keeping. A word to pass along is clean those bores after shooting corrosive ammo, it destroys the bore almost over night.
Great review !! I had a "new" M48 that had frequent case separation due to case stretching even with mid or low power loads. It's gone now, but it was a stunningly beautiful rifle.
The Portuguese 04/39 is my favorite milsurp rifle to shoot. I love the slick, highly polished hybrid Mannlicher/Mauser action. It is light and easy to point and carry. The rifle is greatly underrated. In my mind it is a rifle that should be highly sought after by collectors and shooters but is mostly unknown or underappreciated. It is in my own "elite" category of rifles which would include the K31 and Type 99.
Riflechair, nice 8MM manage ma twas... I only own the M48 in fact two but I do own a well worn 39' Irma and a 40' Obendorf and can tell you they are miles apart and better made and performers than my M48's. Also a 1939 Persian Mauser British capture, the finest made 8mm I've touched.
Big Mauser fan here. My M04/M39 is not as pretty as yours, but is matching. The Persian 98/29 probably wins the beauty contest, with the Swedish 96 right there. For military bolt guns, the slick action award goes to the Greek M 1903/14 Mannlicher-Schoenauer, hands down (rotary mag's cool, too). The bonus of having a slew of Mausers is that when bring home a new one, you just tell your lady, "Oh, that's just my Mauser." Worked so far.
I have found the same problem with m48 they are some what rough. And have very thin case hardiness one of the remedies. Is to polish cocking cam on bolt and and strikersear with casinite and acetylene w/ carbonized flame .🐗
I love Mausers, fantastic rifles, except for the sights. At least on the ones I've fired. I much prefer the peep sights though and the Mosin Nagant sights are easier for me to see.
Great Video.... many thanks for taking the time to do this one.... I love the sight picture of the Portuguese rifle over the standard Mauser sights. Curious if there are shorter front sight posts available to get that point of impact up? Final note - your Lee Enfield vids are my favorites... Thanks RC.
I love the button on the floor plate of the Portuguese Mauser. Pops right open. I know of no other Mauser that has that feature. All great rifles. I have a M48a and a M1904/39.
Sorry, this was a great comparison between those very different, however similar, rifles. I like the video and the rifles, but my failure to discern which way the action is operating-cock on open or close-leapt to mind before our cultural etiquette did: "Thanks very much for sharing this video, great stuff-but I’ve got a question..."
What was your point of aim for the targets? Trying to decide if mine is off. My M48 (all number matching and pristine except a small gouge in buttstock) shoots at 100 yards approx 9” high with S&B and Fedarm. 8” high with Yugo surplus. The Prvi shoots 6” high but is lower velocity. I haven’t taken it past 100 yards yet.
Great video, thanks. I own myself a m48 , israeli, chilean in 308 and a FN m1930 in 308. All great guns but the belgian is perfectly made, I think it will be difficult to know wich is the Best with thé vz24. ..
I've played with both Czech and Belgian Israeli K98k variants and they were both equivalents to one another for quality and function. I'd REALLY love to play with a FN 1930 that would be amazing. My dream rifle is an unissued Persian / BRNO made 98
Yes it's great rifle, in fact it's my first mauser. He have the FN commercial crest on the receiver with 1938 and a bend bolt, there no mention of this kind of 1930 in the great "mausers of the world ". Thanks again for your vidéos i learn a lot. And thanks for saying again "It's not teak ! "
Pardon my ignorance, but are these three rifles cock on close (or open) actions? I’m searching for the most easily cycled Bolt action rifle - that’s still affordable. I’m not able to afford an Anschutz.
Mauser actions, at least any military surplus like the three RC has in the video are cock-on-open designs, where a cock-on-close action is one like the Enfield SMLE rifles.
Uncle Stone thanks for sharing the info. I’d love to try out as many bolt action rifles as possible...(I have limited strength/spinal cord injury). I’m afraid that it won’t be long until the only rifles that’ll be legal to use, (for idiots like me who follow the rules), will be bolt actions. I don’t know if this is the right place to say anything, but I live in Canada and our recent government gun ban made it illegal to own ~1500 different rifles unless, you have status as a "1st Person"-then it’s your traditional right. Our PM says, “you don’t need an AR 15 to bring down a deer“…unless you’re a member of the 1st Persons. I don’t understand that logic but the only tradition I have-as a Canadian-is paying taxes. Lots of taxes. I love to go target shooting, so as to be the best marksman I can be, but this bigotry against Canadians-responsible, law abiding (R)PAL/CORE holding citizens-has left me incredibly disheartened.
I'd get a Swiss K31 if I were you, and didn't mind hunting for ammo. It's a straight pull, and smooth as butter. You could shoot that well into your nineties with a limbsaver.
if you can find the SB, Sellier Bellot. I have tried the remington, winchester, PPU, really anemic, and the groups were not pleasing. The SB ammo is loaded to European load standards and I average less than 2 inch groups at 100 yards off sandbags with the M48
if you can even find the Yugo 198(?) mil surp stuff grab it, my buddy ,from Serbian Army , shot a ragged hole of five rounds at 50 yards rapid fire, no kidding.
Ed is 100% right. S&B makes the best commercial 8X57 I've seen. Its HOT but totally safe.S&B actually loads the 8X57 to its potential. Norma might be pretty much the same. The S&B brass however is very brittle and you won't be able to get many load out of it before it needs to hit the recycling bin.
