ive been loving macro type photography with flowers recently. its amazing what detail can be found in a petal or a little water droplet resting on it. I get some amazing images with the 24-105/4 canon lens. something I definitely want to get more into, macro photography. its a niche thing but so mesmerizing to look at. This will inspire me to get out and do some macro stuff around the house. The coffee bean shots look amazing! Thank you for the video and more importantly the inspiration 👍👍

Thanks. I shoot a lot of macros but never in a studio setting (and I rarely arrange anything other than sometimes removing "visual contamination"). As you point out, DoF plays an important role in most macros, so there's a huge advantage in using smaller-sensor cameras, with their inherently greater DoF. My Oly TG-5 (1/2.3") has a minimum focusing distance of 1cm, yielding an optical magnification of 7x. It also has a ring LED diffuser which takes care of lighting issues plus in-camera focus stacking and bracketing. That said, I do most of my macros with my G9 and the Oly 60mm Macro (2x mag./120mm EFL). The G9 also has in-body focus stacking and bracketing, but also Post-Focus. In cases where I'm photographing skittish, live subjects (mainly bugs), my Leica 100-400 has a minimum focusing distance of 1.3m (4.27') at 800mm EFL--another advantage of MFT over larger-sensors. Good tip setting manual focus and moving the camera rather than relying on AF, as it rarely "knows" what you want.

Focus stacking in macro ranges between magnification ratios of 1:10 to 5:1 does very rarely work, optically you run into issues of magnification changes while refocusing. The only things that work are subjects that have no overlap within the complete stack. Thus almost no complex flowers, no insects with discernible legs, hair, feelers. These stack defects are unavoidable, no matter if you use the lens or a macro focusing rail to refocus and the software can‘t help you much either.

Great informative video Adam, thank you! One question, what are your thoughts on using a tripod for macro photography? I am not the best at 'hand holding " my camera and I thus lose a lot of sharpness in my images. Thanks again.
@FlatWaterFilms
@FlatWaterFilms Год назад
f/2.8 lens or better, higher ISO and a faster shutter speed. 🙂
@micksmixxx
@micksmixxx Год назад
Please excuse me for 'butting in', Paul, but there are benefits to using a tripod when taking Macro photographs, especially if you wish to maintain sharpness in your images. I do have a couple of pointers, though, if you wish to continue hand holding your camera. Try pulling your arms in towards the bulk of your body, and try to control your breathing. i.e. compose yourself, breathe in and hold your breath, then press your shutter release. (Dependent on your specific camera, you could use a remote shutter release ... either a shutter release cable or a wi-fi enabled shutter release to 'press the shutter release'.) This will aid with the actual pressing of the shutter release button on your camera. You could also, if you do choose to use a tripod, is to use the self-timer on your camera. This will aid in any movement, or tremor, that you might experience when hand holding.
@alasdairmackenzie905
@alasdairmackenzie905 Год назад
Paul, A tripod is a necessity if you are focus stacking. It also enables you to use a slider to better control the movement of your focus points over your subject more accurately.

As a large part of my job at a SW specialty aquarium store, I do macro coral photography in aquariums with a submersible lens cover. I really struggle to get enough light on my subject to allow me to go much over F8 and get more of the coral in focus, and I already shoot at a pretty high ISO of 1200 or so. I wonder if there's an underwater flash I could use.

Great video. The Canon EF 100 macro was the first lens I purchased with IS and I never have or will buy another lens without it. Well maybe so if the camera has ISIS. Anyway, thought, what can you do with coffee beans and salt. Didn't sound interesting. Man was I wrong. That was awesome, and yor adding blue was ingenious. You are a true artist!

@@Firstmanphotography because of the cold transfer trough the wall and you end up with the back of the guitar being colder than the front, the neck can twist a little with time. there's 3 rules i try to follow for my guitar. never on an outside wall, never in a room with a fireplace and never in a place where the sun can shine on it

A non macro could be done with the same setup. Just add a cup of hot steaming water. Add a biscuit or whatever. Makes a nice still life.
