There is also a non intuitive relationship between linear gains in damage reduction to exponential gains in survivability. Example, assume you have 4k health and take get hit with a 4k unmitigated hit. At 0 res you are one shot. At 25 res you take 3k damage but need to be hit twice to die. At 50 res, you again need to be hit twice. At 75, its now 1k a hit and requires 4 hits to die. See how a linear step of 25 didn't change the number of hits to die but all of a sudden it doubled? Now at 90 which is less than a linear step you take 400 damage and now need 10 hits to die. It's not a linear scaling stat, the more you have the far more powerful it becomes.

Nice comment. It's called hyperbolic scaling (hope I translated it well) where a function reaches infinite within a finite time (or "steps"). It's basically how old RMR used to work. On a base level, the first 1% you invest into it is not equal to the 99th 1% you invest into it because of the nature of the function. I know that is not the case for res specifically because it is hard coded to stop at 90% but assuming you could get to 100%, you go from the first 1% (taking you from 0% res to 1%) doing absolutely nothing to the 99th 1% making you immune to ele damage.

@Tenkei. I absolutely love the series and how you break down things and explain. One thing I've always wanted as a fairly new player is a death log from GGG. Now, that's not gonna happen any time soon, so I think we are relying on people who actually understand the game enough to teach it to others, such like yourself. It would be great if in the near future, you could teach us the thought process between me dying to a random "thing" in the map, to identifying it and modifying my defences accordingly. I think that would be of great value to all people that are just following builds, without understanding how to fix certain things when the build failes them due to new mods/mechanics. I think learning how to fix things and therefore progress in POE is what will keep us playing, instead of rage-quitting like most players do. Thank you for doing this. You are an absolute star. Ovi. PS: That interview you did with James? An absolute banger. I love you even more now!!!

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the interview! I plan to cover "why you died" in a future episode, but first I need to build up the knowledge base I'm referencing, because knowing how resistances work is a good start to knowing why you died to a degen for example. What I plan to do is establish the basics first via Path of Learning, then talk about medium complexity topics like "why did you die" before getting into the Build Academy stuff such as layering defenses.

One thing that's helped me has been recording my gameplay with a program that has an instant replay feature. Usually I'm able to at least sort of identify what killed me that way.

it might be an interesting video idea to speak to a new player about poe to get a better sense of their struggles. i've watched plenty of guides by now but they tend to focus around the same few things, maybe im not searching the right terms or dont know the right terms to search, but there is still some fundamental knowledge that i believe i am lacking in

I like watching this kind of content, even with a lot of time in the game, and with a solid understanding of these concepts (I've made content on the topic). However, I still often pick up little tidbits. For example, I didn't know there was a hard cap of -200 resistance to a given element. Cheers!

excellent work doing these educational series! im looking forward to see a video about how can a character solve the issues of : reflected damage, unaffected by curses, can not be stunned, ailment immunity,reduced/no extra damage from critical strikes, maim,hinder,silence, bleeding,corrupted blood... pre acquiring mageblood is a very annoying time period.i understand that we can not have all of em, most high quant maps will have - max res, cursed by ele weakness, mobs have inc crit multi,chance, can not regen. archenemies and zappers made those mobs feel like bosses. what i just said might need like 10 videos, just giving you feedback from a somewhat new player wanting to enjoy poe but find myself playing builds that are able to solve most of the issues mentioned above. thanks for your effort of making content man. cheers

I already planned to include some of those in future videos. Others like Reflect/Monsters Cannot be stunned not so much because generally the correct answer there is: roll over that mod if it's problematic, because cannot be stunned has no solution and reflect while fixable requires too many resources to fix most of the time.

This is my first season playing RF...and playing jugg. I'm lvl 80 right now and my resistances are crap. Should I sacrifice a bit of damage on gear to up then or just rely on purity of elements?

Great job with video. In another video would you beable to add on brief explanation of X damage taken as another damage type. Why or when you want to have these type of bonuses. Example 5 lightning taken as physical .

Hi I appreciate these videos, I only started in Archnemesis first levelling experience was rough without knowing about resistances :) Do you think you could do a video in this series about how to know what bases are worth picking up depending on your build? It feels confusing as to what items can roll what stats or atleast it feels like that. I find that one of the most confusing things when building gear, I tried making my own filter and have just been playing SSF to try figure more things out by playing slowly and not relying on trading which I struggle to get currency for anyway haha

Knowing which bases to pick up doesn't depend on your build, it depends on your current gearing. Think about it this way, if your gloves suck, you probably want new ones. If you're primarily using armor, and sometimes evasion for defense then you want armor, or armor/eva based gloves so that's what you pick up.

Do you recommend buffing your resistances using passive skills from the tree, or solely from gear? I don't want to mess my build up, but the resistance buffs on the passive tree are very tempting.

Recommendations to this are meaningless as the only right answer is dependant on the context of your character. If you don't have the resists on your gear you get them from jewels or your passive tree. Once you get better items, you can respec the tree. Just get those resistances up. How you do it doesn't matter. But yeah.. long term you want it all from your gear.

Ground effects not being able to penetrate resistances is correct but it's definitely worth noting that they CAN apply debuffs that lower your resistances or maximum resistances, for example the Sirus ground effect "Desolation of the Awakener" makes you take fire, physical. lightning and chaos damage over time but also reduces the maximum of those resistances by I believe 10%, which effectively is 10% penetration

Yeah, maven's beam is an example of something else that globally lowers your resistances -10% on normal, and I believe -20 on uber (because there's 2 versions which can stack). Which then effectively means her damage over time effects get pen in addition to her hits (cascade of pain has actual pen on it).

I didn't know penetration acted on your cap, explains why exposure exists so that dot based ele builds can benefit from reduced enemy resistances. Also explains why it's so strong on builds

Yeah there are a lot of implicit rules that define things, critical strike, double damage, and penetration for example are all (by default) only applied to hits.

TY, that explains why I needed 118% Electrical Resistance to defeat Dominus; but it does seem very misleading to indicate to players that Resistance is capped at 75% when in fact you need far more than 75% and the real number of your resistance is the (118%) and the 75% is basically fictional. I know your not a Dev, and are in no way responsible for that bit of Brain Pollution, but I do thank you for flushing it out of my head.

A small correction for around 3:55. GGG only balance the endgame content around 75% elemental resistances. The acts and other non endgame areas are not balanced around this value.

If I may recommend something, it would be so that feed with your face was smaller or placed somewhere else (maybe top right corner?) - for whatever reason, combination of size and positioning made it very distracting (for me at least). Are you going to make a similar video on armour?

Is it recommended to take nodes for additional resistances and/or over-capping resistance nodes as a general rule early on when gear is insufficient? Should getting to 75+ be #1 priority?

75% should be your #1 priority, going beyond that comes down to how careful you are willing to be and what other defenses you have. If you are curse and ailment immune for example, the only source of lowered resistances you'll encounter is exposure from archnemesis which you can often play around. If you are often being cursed, and you are not immune to scorch then yes I would suggest a buffer so get your uncapped resistances to at least 95% (105% lets you negate scorch, 109% to fully negate ele weak, and you'd need an absurd amount at 139% to negate both at once.)

How does incandecent heart + CI works if you have 75% elemental resist? Does that mean you are immune to 25% of the monsters elemental damage?

Let's say an enemy skill deals 4,000 fire damage. You would normally take 1000 fire damage after res. Instead you now take: 3000 fire damage + 1000 chaos damage You would now take 750 fire damage after res.

Taken as, or "damage shifting" is not conversion. Something can only be shifted once, so any fire damage you take would be shifted partially to physical via the rat cage, and any physical damage you take would be shifted to fire by your ascendancy, but shifted damage would not be further shifted (no infinite loop).

If it's only 1 passive point for 1% all max? Always. If it's a single res, it depends on the state of your defenses and the more res you have the more valuable it is. For example going from 89% -> 90% it's ~9% less damage taken from that damage type. If it's 75% -> 76% it's ~4% less damage taken.

Cool series. I am going to make a boss immortal build next league and I might make my very first video about it, showing off the unused mechanics that can make that happen. Is that being hit by both both double flameblast from Uber atziri in the feared, 0 damage taken.

Thanks, immortal builds are always neat though often at a risk of being nerfed by GGG because generally persistent immortal builds are bad for the game. They're fun while they last, and sometimes do last quite a long time.

@@Tenkiei I already have a build that can facetank all non-uber bosses and all of their attacks. Memory game, none guard skilled meteor maze final phase, crystal king depth 500+ and more. But I die to DoT. I can take hits like nothing, but I take DoT like wet paper. Because my Health pool is small, and my regn is small, and I do not leech. I have under 3k HP. I have taken Uber atziri single flameblast no problem. I can do wave 30 simulacrum no problem and with good speed. I can do most deep delving, but when I get azirite I am scared of the cold DoTs on the floor. Man it is such as a strange concept. I died constantly to not nerfed AN rares.

The value of wind ward depends on how quickly you're using skills. In general though I would not advise someone play a deadeye without it.

What you say is useful and I know that editing takes a lot of effort and time but consider using power point presentation or some static images presenting few items with different resistance mods and not a writeout on moving background with similar color.

In general, people find moving backgrounds to be more engaging than static images, but if it's unclear to read I should be able to blur the background more in the future. I intentionally avoided static images of items, because the goal is to get people interested in looking things up on their own. So if an item in this video made you curious I suggest looking it up on the poe wiki, poedb, or the trade site.

I get my resistance. I’ve seen what the impact is when I don’t have enough. My problem is the monsters resistance. My Tooltips, RF 189k / Fire trap 239k. Elemental weakness curse and wave of conviction exposure. When this hits an enemy that “resists fire” it appears that it means immune to fire. I can stand in their face and drop 10+ traps right on them and they take damage like I’m a level 1 and they are Thanos. Gold and blue monsters are just roaming bosses it seems. Maybe one day I will figure it out.

This is especially an issue of path of exile's in-game tooltip being very bad. But a good first step is to check path of building to see a more accurate approximation of your damage. "Resists" and "Vulnerable" to elements on monsters are also approximations. If something is immune that could be the empowered elements archnemesis modifier, or it could be the "immune to fire" expedition remnant for example.

I doubt there will ever be a death recap in poe because it would take hundreds of hours to make (it requires completely redesigning the game's backend to present useful information), but if you run something like Nvidia's Shadowplay software or something similar you can capture the last 30 seconds of gameplay and have your own death recap.

Spelling out the fact that a 1000 damage fireball is set as 4000 damage in game, therefore a 25% reduction is equal to double damage. I actually didn't understand that basic fact the entire time I've been playing the game..... TY and I am so dumb lol.

Some really great info in the guide here, very well done. There are a number of times where your script could use a little tweaking to make it more new player friendly though. I feel like it has a habit of going on a tangent and talking about late-game items or specific abilities. It's useful to note these but they are brought up in places that are aimed at new players so a bit superfluous. Would love to go over your script and make a few tweaks.

For anyone wondering, you chaos resistance goes down 30% after act 5 and then another 30% later. It's because of the acts not your build.

WAIT!! This video says nothing about the resistances that monsters have! Specifically: - Say there's a spell X that deals 100 physical damage, and another spell Y that deals 100 fire damage. - Would I be better off using Spell X and casting Vulnerability? Or should I use spell Y, and cast flammability???

Because that's not how path of exile is set up to work. You are better off using the skill the character is built for, and you do not mix damage types such as physical and fire without converting. So if you are a build that uses fire skills, you will always use the fire skill because it will deal 1000 damage, and the physical one will deal 100, so even if the monster had 85% fire res, you will do more with the fire skill. The same in reverse if you were a physical build, you always use the physical skill. Monster resistances work the same way as player resistances, they have resists, and a cap and some things add or remove resistances.

if shaper balls penetrate 25% of cold cap, it is 75% x 0.25 = 18,75% get penetrated/ignored for calculation, not 25%. I know u just explained it, but for me it sounds wrong. Maybe that just a PoE thing idk :D

@@Tenkiei Oh, okay thanks. Personaly I think ignore would be better decription than penetrate in this case, but I'm from Germany, maybe thats why some stuff in PoE feels wrong. Even when someone like you explains it. =)

@@CaptainBalue Path of exile heavily uses keywording. So "Penetrates" and "Ignores" are both keywords in path of exile. Ignores refers to treating as 0, the resistance is ignored regardless of value. Such as Eternity Shroud Penetration on the other hand, only partially negates resistance. It is also implied that "Ignore" could in theory apply to damage over time effects because "hits" another keyword is specified on eternity shroud, whereas Penetration IS a property of hits and could never apply to DoTs (there are no cases of DoTs ignoring resistances however so it could be that only hits can ignore, only GGG would know this). Edit: Also, keywords are an upcoming video topic.
