One of the earliest examples of computer animation, A Computer Animated Hand was made by Edwin Catmull and Fred Parke in 1972. Catmull stood at the basis of what was to become Pixar.
I upscaled the video from SD quality to 4K with Video Enhance AI. The original video was pretty battered up so I had to use a lot of smoothing to reduce the noise and visual artifacts. I manually added film grain in my video editor to make it feel like the 70s film reel it started out as.

They've done that with less than a 100th of the computing power of a smartphone, incredible. How many hours had they to wait for the rendering? And all the work with modeling the poligons without tools we have right now. Wow.

Looks better than the Mario 64 title screen

Absolutely amazing for 1972. The Pixar book highlights these early years when Ed was inventing most of the 3D-polygon rendering techniques that are still commonly used to this day.

Yeah for 1972 this is mind bogglingly good.

Yeah I hadn't heard of it until this month. It's important part of history but pretty forgotten.

Did anyone else come here from the Facebook thread lool. Graphics do remind me of James bond golden eye game on N64. Could not have been a CGI photo of earth taken in 1972

Such great taste with the 3D motion graphic design. And graphic design probably wasn't even a specialty of his.

This music is so time inappropriate for the video it throws me off entirely. Why did you make this choice, the topic is so interesting and you have such great material! I needed to mute. There were a ton of lot more appropriate choices (music from the time, perhaps even early synth, the same kind of geeking out just in the realm of sound, as this animated hand) or anything, just not something from the 30's)

This song is from the 50s I believe. Also I like it. Feels like I'm watching Mr Rogers picture picture.

This is the music I’ve heard with every version of this film I’ve ever seen! Even if not originally intended by the director (which is unclear I guess) I thought it fit perfectly and made it much much more enjoyable to watch! Whatever else could be so relaxing?

It was common for student and tech demo films to use stock music. It’s more interesting than a completely silent film and cheaper than writing and recording new material. I believe they were looking for something with a vibe similar to A Charlie Brown Christmas, an approach shared with the 1986 Pixar short Luxo Jr.
