A Conservative on How His Party Has Changed Since 2016

The 2024 Republican presidential primary is officially underway, and Donald Trump is dominating the field. But this is a very different contest than it was in 2016. Back then, the Republican Party was the party of foreign policy interventionism, free trade and cutting entitlements, and Trump was the insurgent outsider unafraid to buck the consensus. Today, Trump and his views have become the consensus.
The primary, then, raises some important questions: How has Donald Trump changed the Republican Party over the past eight years? Is Trumpism an actual set of policy views or just a political aesthetic? And if Trump does become the nominee again, where does the party go from here?
Ben Domenech is a longtime conservative writer who served as a speechwriter in George W. Bush’s administration and co-founded several right-leaning outlets, including RedState and The Federalist. He’s currently a Fox News contributor, an editor at large at The Spectator and the author of the newsletter The Transom. From these different perches, he has closely traced the various ways the Republican Party has and, crucially, has not changed over the past decade.
This conversation explores whether Donald Trump really did break open a G.O.P. policy consensus in 2016, the legacy of what Domenech calls “boomer Republicanism,” how to reconcile Trump’s continued dominance with his surprisingly poor electoral record, the rise of “Barstool conservatism” and other new cultural strands on the right, whether conservatives actually want “National Review conservatism policy” with a “Breitbart conservatism attitude,” what Domenech thinks a G.O.P. candidate would need to do to outperform Trump and more.
This episode contains strong language.
This episode was hosted by Jane Coaston, a staff writer for Times Opinion. Previously, she hosted “The Argument,” a New York Times Opinion podcast. Before that she was the senior politics reporter at Vox, with a focus on conservatism and the G.O.P.

Understand that going against that goes against their voters, their donors, as well as 50 years of their economic ethos. Cutting taxes to the bone is how they rewarded with electoral victories in that time period becsdue it would "stimulate the economy" and "return higher revenues." For them to admit that that's false ends their careers - or begins thier careers as liberal politicians. It's a bit like magic tricks. It's magic, so long as it works on somebody. And that magic continues to work on their voters. Sadly, that side of the business isn't even whet matters ti then anymore. They are more concerned with lynching blacks and gays these days, and the pandemic didn't help with their base levels of scientific literacy. The fiscal conservatives of the past several decades made a deal with the devil courting these evangelicals for votes. It's hard to say if that Pandora box will ever close again.

It’s not about the economy going into a downturn; it’s about our unwillingness to provide support to families, to take on income stagnation (except on the left), because of the right wing concern that someone undeserving somewhere is getting something they ought not.
@subcitizen2012
@subcitizen2012 9 месяцев назад
Which is only a rhetorical device they use as an excuse to cover for the fact that they view everyone as undeserving, and /or that it completely goes against their principles of helping anyone that can't already help themselves (billionaire business folk). It goes against every moral and economic principle fabric in their bones. If they were capable of thinking differently about things like that, they wouldn't be conservatives.

i was born in 51. At age 12 (1963), I decided I would never marry because it seemed like a raw deal for women since men did not want to do "womens' work" ie washing dishes, doing laundry, cooking dinner etc even though women were now working outside of the home. Surveys in the past indicate that single women are the happiest, married men the 2nd happiest, married women the 3rd happiest, and unmarried men the unhappiest. I'm very happy with my cat. She does not give me any grief. Trump will go away after he dies and at some point he will make the list of bad presidents.

Always remember ...Trump is a marketer who watches TV and reads Newspapers. He pays attention to the public information and tailors his conversations to what he is hearing. He is always up to date because new media focuses on just a few things ... thus elevating those few things. He can then market his grift to the news!

I am 2/3 thru interview and have to stop due to my schedule, BUT I have yet to hear about rampant capitalism and the wealth disparity. What about mental health care and nutrition? Corporate food industry has hijacked our health. lobbyists are more powerful to enact laws than voters... NRA, food, real estate industry, energy, etc. How about Brene Brown proven training for how to negotiate to all elected officials? How about criteria such as passing gov law and economics tests to anyone who runs for office. We have idiots on the hill. Counterintuitive training is a must so we understand how good governments can work in the lobg run. How about learning from other countries like Finland??? We suck!!

An excellent and respectful conversation. Great to get a nuanced discussion like that about the Republican party and its factions and future. I hope someone on the right can step up and bring the economy (which will probably be in recession during the election) and foreign policy together to say that Ukraine showed that autocratic regimes like Russia, China, and Iran can start crazy wars of aggression and that given the US wants to be out of the business of invading other nations we have stopped spending on the ammunition etc that is actually needed by us and our allies if we are going to defend against invasion by other nations. But allies can pay for their shells and drones if we can become the best and highest volume producer of these armaments. We can build more jobs with good job security that help us secure the nation and that we sell at the best price to our allies. Why is the world reliant on buying drones from China. We should be making the best and most effective drones here and not for eye watering prices that just lines the pockets of the beltway bandits. Therefore it is possible to rebuild a better self-reliant security for all Americans while also strengthening our economy over the long term and limiting out technological reliance on China
