I don't understand how grunge killed "hair metal." I heard Nirvana, thought "catchy tune," and that was as far as it went. I need guitar solos. I never turned my back on Ratt and the rest. I can't be alone. And I also still loved Sabbath, Zep, and a host of others. Alice In Chains are the only grungy band that caught my attention and they're metal-ish to my way of thinking.

In my view, hair metal was a load of overblown shit and media stopped paying attention to it because something more honest and real came along and took over.

I’m right there with you, man. I never liked grunge and still don’t. However, I didn’t like some of the metal bands that were popping up in the late 80s and early 90s (enuffs enuff, danger danger, bullet boys, pretty boy Floyd, etc).

Great interview, Jason and Jay Jay! One point: AJ Pero was an incredible drummer. His personality comes through in his playing. I believe that most drummers know it - unfortumnately, TS’s gimmick made “Joe Rock Fan” and the critics overlook the great playing and songwriting. I’m an SMF. I absolutely love You Can’t Stop R&R and Stay Hungry.

My friends and I used to see Twisted Sister at places like 'Circus Circus' or 'The Soap Factory' (both in New Jersey) back in the day. We threw an Ace Frehley pinback button badge on stage and Jay Jay comes out with it pinned on his guitar strap a few songs later! We got such a kick out of that!

Hey Jason, I remember your interview with Eddie Ojeda that you said Twisted Sister was the first rock band you ever listened to and played it over and over again. I was the same way I had six or seven of their albums on cassette, my first one being Stay Hungry. Such a wonderful way to spend our childhood listening to great rock bands like these. Thanks for the great work. Keep it up!

Fan of Twisted Sister since 1986. I want to read the book. Looking forward to it. I'm a woman...not a rock star. Not trying to reinvent myself ..not sure i would but lots of entertainers and artists do. Never heard band stories like this one. I grew up around my family's friend's local bands and my friend's family's bands, but never heard anything like this before. Lol.

His gig count is ridiculous. Playing 5 sets in one night is NOT "5 shows". That's just complete bullshit! He's played more gigs than most people, so why he has to pad his record is beyond me. I would not trust anyone with that kind of creative arithmetic.

Yes he is a master in communication. Him and Dee convinced many that they were as big as the big guys. Sorry 80s was my teen time and know it all. They never headlined once in Canada during their heydays. I mean headline in f costa rica is normal. Any bands are big like the Beatles there

Williamsburg, Brooklyn checking in - I remember Twisted Sister bar show radio commercials while I did homework at night in 1980, '81 when I was 13 "See Twisted Sister with Rat Race Choir, Thursay at Muthers." It sounded like a decadent dangerous subculture I wasn't allowed to know about. I also saw Dee Snyder down and out in '93 open for Ace Frehley to like 100 people in NYC. I'm glad these guys rose from the ashes to thrive on the festival circuit. And the Twisted Christmas show on YT is priceless.

Amazing that he's lived in the same apartment for 60 years! You should do an interview totally on that subject. I mean,Is JJ French rich enough where he can get chauffeured around everywhere? Does he park in his building, does he drive? Living in the upper east side of New York City is a pain in the ass when it comes to traveling unless you have a vehicle. Unless he has relied on public transportation for the last 60 years going to giggs and stuff. This is the stuff inquiring minds want to know

I seen Twisted Sister i think in 84? I might be mistaken on the yr? They opened for DIO at Pine Knob in Michigan. I have to say that "The Price" is my favorite Twisted Sister Song. They have some great songs obviously but when i learned the Stay Hungry album that song was put together nicely. Love the solo too.

Under The Blade is what got us headbangers attention. Stay Hungry was a lot of fun at the right time. SMF, Captain Howdy. Some great songs on that record. TS is not a top echelon rock or metal band, but they are a damn good Rock/ Metal band and I enjoy the songs still today.

It is fascinating too think about how twisted sister would have fared if they had stuck to their guns and stuck together between 1987 and 1991.. most likely would have done nothing before grunge came.. because they had already shot their load with stay hungry and the following two albums were commercial disappointments.

It may be because of where I live but it’s strange to hear Jay Jay put TS next to ac/dc, maiden etc. In my country they were seen as a gimmick band with one or two hits along side Quiet Riot etc. To my knowledge, they were never in the league of those big acts. Am I wrong?
@ricke.warden
@ricke.warden 2 года назад
Same here in Texas. I, and many headbanger friends, really liked the Under The Blade when it came out. No one really cared what Dee looked like. The music was good metal and we were hungry for more. Stay Hungry has some good tunes. TS was never appreciate on the level of Iron Maiden/ Judas Priest or even AC/DC. More like on the level of Metal On Metal - Anvil. Must have, but not the top echelon. That was as it was happening. Those TS songs do still stand up today as good songs, but if I hadn’t experienced it as it came out, I might not like it as much.
