A rare, inspiring deleted scene from Louder Education S2 E4 w/ Twisted Sister's Jay Jay French & Testament's Alex Skolnick.
Subscribe to Metal Injection on RU-vid: bit.ly/ZhpTbA
During the taping, Jay Jay French gave an exclusive autobiographical look into the history of his life, and band. Although I had to cut it from the episode, his hour long tale is the most compelling and inspiring story I have filmed in 10 years of Metal Injection history.
Enjoy.

His timeline is perfect, accurate. I knew many of the rock clubs characters he "speaks" of, Mark Puma, Larry "Detroit" Tortorici, Phil Basile..... JJ's story is touching, sad, hysterical, heartfelt, knowledgable, articulate, sober and true. Props to Twisted Sister & JJ !

WOW .. This is a great interview .. I saw Twisted Sister during the times he talks about during the 1970's in New Haven, Connecticut at the New Haven Music Hall and that's when I became a fan .. Deal or no deal, they really did rock the tri-state area .. I even saw the Dead shows he talks about too .. This interview brought back great memories .. Those were the days .. Thanks for posting it.

I just got through reading his Wikipedia page 3 mins ago, and I guarantee it'll shock NOBODY to learn that he's got a side career as a "motivational speaker" for corporations and other groups! He also produced the group Sevendust, although they had gone through about a million name changes before settling on "Sevendust".

Excellent Grateful Dead story! Jay Jay is an awesome story teller. He was even close to remembering the date of his last GD show. There was no concert on 10/12/72, but the GD did play at Roosevelt Stadium on 9/19/72. It was not a great concert (compared to most of the other monster shows from '72). Thanks for sharing this!

September 1972 is a special 30 days in GD history, even the "bad" shows are a joy to listen to. They're finally releasing parts of that show. They're missing reels for 9/19 and 9/3 and are combining some of the existing material for the next Dave's Picks. There is a pretty poor audience recording, the show definitely needs a soundboard upgrade. That said it is probably the weakest show of the month.

This has got to be one of the best interviews i've ever seen for music & anything for that matter. J.J. French could seriously take this on the road & lecture children in high schools/grade schools on how harsh the music industry is & how important your schooling is & to have a back up plan. The music industry is even harsher now with next to no record sales. I just don't understand how the record companies still haven't lowered their cd prices? The prices haven't changed since the inception of the internet & illegal downloading. You'd think they'd lower the prices to like $10-$15 in which yes you can find some for good prices for that but i live in Canada & for the music i listen to which is 85% metal & i'll buy say Iron Maiden,Overkill,Danzig,Type O Negative,Megadeth,Metallica,Life of Agony,Yadda,Yadda. But i find that if i want to buy let's say an old Iron Maiden 'Piece of Mind' album the price is through the roof & it's like $25!!

When I was in HS, the drinking age was 18, and we would see TS 2 or 3 times a month. They were an amazing bar band doing mostly covers. They opened with Sabbath's Never Say Die. The shows were incredible. But it didn't translate to arena's. Their act was meant for clubs.

That has got to be the funniest story of any band in rock music history. I did see TS perform once. I believe it was their last show before their retirement in 1987 at the Felt Forum in New York city at Madison Square Garden. Great White opened the show. Both bands really kicked ass that night. I was really surprised because I wasn't expecting either band to be as good as they were. TS definitely was the better band and played and incredible set from what I remember. I believe the LP was Love Is For Suckers, or something like that. I'll never forget that night. I saw Howard Stern there. Didn't get close to him, but saw him walking backstage. He waved to the crowd. TS had one of the very early MTV videos with YCSR&R, which was a great song at the time to a 12 yr old kid. Even as a kid I thought they were cool as hell until they'd transform into a transgender style which to me was a total turn off and kept me from ever being a real fan of the band. I'm happy I got to see one of their all time best performances. It was a unique time in history and I was also really privileged to see Great White perform the song Rock Me right in front of me. That is still etched in my memory to this day.

That is genius "You need rain to make the flowers grow " just like you need failure to grow. This entire interview proves the observation by Hunter S Thompson - "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."

@hazor777 9 лет назад
irishelk No, they did suck. They always sounded like they were tuning up. The most brilliant thing they did - and set the bar for it, pretty much - was MARKETING. The Dead WERE Marketing to a "T". For that, I respect them....but definitely NOT for their "music".
@irishelk3
@irishelk3 9 лет назад
***** Yeahh okay haha what was your favorite live show?
@hazor777
@hazor777 9 лет назад
irishelk What? Out of anybody? I saw the Dead once (last tour, in 95) - it was crap, even more so because the dead heads were nothing but a bunch of homeless, pathetic drug addicts walking around begging for money and their "miracle". The sad , pathetic shit I saw at that show in the parkinglot made me realize how stupid their whole scene was. May have been "cool" back in 69, 70, 71 whatever - but by 95 it was just dumb. Best live show I've ever seen..? Hard to say, I've seen a lot of bands over the last 30 years. First that comes to mind would be Robert Plant, Now & Zen Tour - in Jax, Fl. (July of 1988) -absolute AWESOME show, in every way.2nd best show I've seen, that comes to mind...would be The Scorpions/Deep Purple in 2002 . Others, off the top of my head: Iron Maiden in 87, The Stones in 89, Plant & Page (2 nights) in 95, Foo Fighters in 99, Pantera in 2000, Metallica in 94, Allman Bros in 93, Rush in 88, - But I've seen great shows that weren't big productions either. : Chris Whitley in a little dive bar....just depends .....
@Contractnik
@Contractnik 8 лет назад
+hazor77 By the time you went, the band was hitting rock bottom (thanks to Jerry's failing health) and the Deadhead scene had turned very dark thanks to all those homeless drug addicts who started wearing tye-dye and used the Dead as an excuse to be crackheads. So you are right -- by then, it sucked. The 90s were not good to the Grateful Dead. But right through 1989, they were on fire. And the scene was amazing. You are right in your assessment, but trust me on mine.
@hazor777
@hazor777 8 лет назад
Contractnik Yea, I can appreciate that. I'll take your word for it, because there had to be "something" to it all, and I guess I missed it. I do remember the time you're talking about, many of my friends were very into them at that point - I was still in high school & very much a classic rock / metal head -so I couldn't really "get" what it was all about . I just know that the 1995 show I experienced really just left me perplexed.....I really felt terribly sorry for a lot of those people...it all seemed like such a waste of their lives....

If I could pick an era to see the Dead it would hands down be 1968-1972. But they didn't play Roosevelt Stadium 10/12/72. They did play there 9/19/72, an average show for what is widely regarded as a peak month for the band. They've officially released 7 archival recordings alone from 8/27/72 to 9/27/72. If you're a Deadhead you cherish this era he speaks of with disdain. Now if he said a show in 1985-1995, I'd probably be in agreement.

+drew p Don't you see my cool leather pants? 13:26 starts saying; " We decided to be a really great bar band." I saw them back then, I was 16 years old. '76-'77 Tueys, E. Setauket, Long Island The Mad Hatter, Lake Grove, L. I. this was right after the first real concert I went to Hot Tuna, Commack Arena 9/11/76. After an initiation like that, Twisted Sister? HA HA HA Fucking dress wearing look at my hiardoo sissy boys. How can a band be a band when you're more concerned with; "What dress should I wear tonight?" "Oh my heir looks awful, I can't go out on stage now, I have to poof up and spray my hair." "Where is my make-up?" "That's not my lipstick!" I HATED this band and still do. Their music was of the simple dumbed-down drunk college douche extraction. It sounded like shit. And most likely still does.

when I was a teenager I assumed that people who had videos on Mtv were all wealthy and living like Led Zeppelin or Queen , traveling on a 727 with the bands name on it and doing high quality cocaine with rolled up hundred dollar bills . Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were practically rich before Led Zeppelin released an album because of session work , and they financed the bands first tour out of pocket , plus they got a big advance from Atlantic , which included no A&R people making demands or suggestions and complete artistic freedom. But most bands end up signing shitty deals and have to have at least 3 big selling albums to get in a position to renegotiate , and then MAYBE they can get a few cents for each album sold and hopefully pay back the advances they got upon signing .

Not personally a Twisted Sister fan but I thought Jay Jay's stories were brilliant. Just don't get stories like this with the newer bands!

According to French, after Twisted Sister recorded their self-released single "Under The Blade," the owner of Electric Lady Studios became angry because part of their production deal with producer Eddie Kramer included the clause that if the band got a deal, they had to pay four times the studio rate. Even though the band used the single as a promotional item, the studio owner bought a copy at a Sam Goody store in the spring of 1982, so he demanded $24,000 and reportedly threatened French with bodily harm if he didn't pay up. "I was threatened directly by the owner," French states. "Then my manager, Mark Puma, and I called some club owner guys who he knew knew the right kind of people to call. Phone calls were made, conversations were had, which I was not privy to, but I was told that $10,000 would clear it. We were told that, out of respect, we should pay this. Out of respect? You mean out of desire to not have my knees broken? Okay. So we did."

@@minooch5670 Wow i came back and didnt know some1 had answered my question. U answered it beautifully, i almost dont want to know if u straight copy pasted it from an article cus it has the clarity and concise events without any bs. and im guessing theres still a lawsuit or potential one which is why he didnt want it on record.

Back in the day when I listened to shit like Twisted Sister, my high school music teacher would say something like "that's not music" and I thought he is an asshole of course it's music, it's just not the type of music he likes. But now I realize it is not music at all. What it actually is, is the purest expression of pure shit, you can have without it being actual shit that came out of an actual asshole.
