When John Wayne held his arm at the end of The Searchers, and Harry Carey's wife saw it, she cried.

I’m 65 years old now, and my daddy raised me on Westerns. And Ben Johnson, Harry Carry, Jr and John Wayne are some of my very favorites. I was that little girl who always asked for a pony for Christmas and my birthday and in between. In 1964 we moved form a subdivision out to the country. One day we were all dressed up to go to a wedding and Daddy was late getting home. I was waiting for him in the front yard. He drove up in a truck to bring me my pony. A complete surprise and one of the happiest days of my life! My last horse died in the summer of 2017. RIP to my cowboy heros and all of our horses!

Great story Pam. I'm but a young lad of 60 and grew up with John Wayne, Alan ladd, Ben Johnson, The lone ranger, Champion the wonder horse to name a few and recently Roy Rogers & Gabby Hayes. America must be the land of opportunity as Roy Rogers started out as a shoe salesman and ended up a big western star. I am from England and still love all the old westerns. James Stewart did some good ones too!! Dave.

Near the end of his life, BEN JOHNSON lived outside Phoenix, Arizona in suburban Mesa. I was working at a country radio station in Phoenix in 1993. Of course Ben had made movies all over Arizona over the years and he came to the station for an interview regarding his CHILDRENS RODEO CHARITIES. He was looking to promote this event. Ben even mentions it in this interview, so several of us at the radio station met him and interviewed him. He would bring all his Hollywood friends into Phoenix for this weekend Rodeo Event and party. He mentions on the air that day that he didn't have an emcee for the event! Being a big fan I volunteered my services and had the chance to meet not only Ben and Harry Carey Jr, but a bunch of my western Hollywood actor heroes. Even met Donna Douglas who played Ellie-May on the Beverly Hillbillies. Ben Johnson was one of the most REAL and DECENT people I think I've ever had the pleasure to meet, know and work with. What you see is what you GOT. I cherish the memory of those times.

Was it by chance Ray Odem's radio station? KAML - was the call sign. CAMEL COUNTRY radio . Buck Owen's bought the station from Ray at some point. I galloped racehorses for Ray & Dolly at Turf Paradise for years. They knew Ben J and John Wayns , Robert Mitchum. Heck, they knew everybody. They did some partying with them and had very nice things to say about Mr Johnson. Just a cowboy with a fancy job.

I really love these guys. They're completely genuine and a lot of fun to listen to. I think it was in the movie "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" that Ben Johnson showed some incredible horsemanship that is unsurpassed. Harry Carey Jr. proved himself to be quite a horseman himself and a great character actor to boot. A lot of the modern westerns are trashy just for the shock value and have no class.

Back in 1983 I was working in the electrical crew of a movie Ben was on. We got delayed in a pop up rain shower and took shelter out of the rain. i happened to have a hank of clothes line on me used to tie up cable with. While stuck there for about half an hour Ben showed me some rope tricks, one in particular where with one hand he would whip a knot into the rope. Then he taught me how to throw a lariat and lasso livestock. It was all new to me though I was a rider back then but by no means a cowhand. He was a very kind and patient man who loved the cowboy life. I worked on a lot of movies and commercials in my career and few had these types of moments. I’ve never watched “The last picture show”, but Ben Johnson didn’t want to make that movie because, he said, he didn’t want his name associated with that kind of a picture. When trying to decide how to turn it down he was told to just tell them he’d do it for a ridiculous high price, which he did. But to his surprise they agreed. So he did it. But he wasn’t proud of it. I believe that one of the biggest things that made him so great, and set him apart and above most actors was that his moral standards and values were much, much higher than most. It emanates from him.

Actually, Harry "Dobie" Carey Jr., & his sister, Eppie, were raised on a ranch in the Saugus area. Harry Carey Sr. loved the western lifestyle, & moved there, close to his buddy, silent western movie star, William S. Hart. Sadly, Mrs. Carey, Sr., didn't like the ranch life, so later on, to honor her wishes, Harry Sr. moved them all to Sherman Oaks. Harry Jr. said that his father wasn't the same after that, but made the sacrifice out of love for his wife.

Having worked over 40 years in HOLLYWOOD myself, I'd have to say like everyone else who has commented here... that Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. are just two genuine western gentleman who truly lived and represented the cowboy code that has long since disappeared... or rather is not "trending now" anymore. Between them with their heartfelt and often comical stories you learn more about what it was like making westerns in that classic era than any documentary or book could reveal. I never got to meet them personally, but I knew their stories from having met so many old-timers and stunt men, character actors who had worked with them and were personal friends. Their down-to-earth, straight talking manner was so refreshing and a joy to listen to, if only our politicians and so-called leaders could only be half as good and honest! It's the character actors like Ben and Harry that always made the stars shine... they were great role models you would just have loved to be around.

Wow. I love these behind the scenes type of interviews, and especially with people like Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. It was refreshing to see how these two old professionals were so modest. I found this video very captivating. I guess it's because I grew up in the 50's and 60's watching these men perform along side John Wayne, in particular. 5 Stars!!!

What a great interview with two wonderful old-timers !! I have loved these guys since I was a kid and just wished the interview had lasted longer than it did. I was so glad to have found this. I was really touched at how old Ben playfully reaches out his hand to that child at the end. They were both real men, tough, humorous, and honest - in a word, real. Thank you for posting this.

And they didn't need to curse to prove how tough they were ... I really like how Ben Johnson told them he wasn't going to do any cussing in that movie .

Are values have changed so much. Me i will never forget the day's i was a little boy running to the tv and watch these westerners. No cartoon's for me and i was 6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 and still today at almost 51 year's old. I still remember what i was doing when the great John Wayne died pulling into K- Mart parking lot with my mother and it came on over the radio. I 😢. GREAT MEN. RIP. ALL OF THEM GREATS. 🇺🇸

@@gardensofthegods "Spin and Marty" was one of the continuing series on Disney's, "Mickey Mouse Club", in the 50's. Someone mentioned, "The Rifleman." Sadly, we just lost, Johnny Crawford, Mark, in that show. Crawford was a Mousekateer in the first season of the, "The Mickey Mouse Club". He also loved the cowboy way, & enjoyed performong some of the old western tunes. God bless the families of these men who brought us so many years of wholesome & quality entertainment.
