What a delightful funny film. They must of cracked up a number of times during rehearsal before getting their lines out straight-faced. What a riot.

I've probably seen this movie 20 times in my life and I can't believe I never picked up this before, Tom Walls not only stars but directs this movie. All star cast across the board as most of these oldies did, it's what makes them timeless.

Good old Tom Walls ! Thanks for uploading . Last saw this in the 80s on Ch4. Apparently Tom Walls was in the Police force early on . So he used his skills from this in the film Pot Luck - this film is bursting with odd quirky characters along with a reasonable storyline .

the comic timing in editing enhancing the speed of the intended jokes is superb, TV shows still use the quick cutaway routine.

What a truly oddly-edited film: that monstrous woman, star of the baddies, goes off for some milk and is never seen again. Absurd. Delightful, but absurd.

This is what happens when you get outstanding actors/writers/production team to come together to produce true entertainment. Very interesting to see a sound film with the famous farceurs - Walls and Lynn. Walls as the old father shows a nice line in comedy, one can see why audiences in the 30s liked Ralph Lynn with his silly-ass monocle so much, but he was already too old for the silly-young-man parts. The cast includes the sublime Robertson Hare as the vicar and the lady who spends most of her time in bed is Yvonne Arnaud, a famous actress of the 20s and 30s who is remembered today by a theatre named after her in Guildford, Surrey.

In todays world this would be very tame. But this farce was set (actually in 1925) for the not so permissive society which makes it so enjoyable to watch. Laughed my socks off. The father-in-law just about stole the show.

Ever hear of the Roaring Twenties? How about the Hays Code in the mid 1930s to rein in excess in movies and save America's morality from swearing, nudity, adultery, gore, drinks and drugs, crime and violence, and all the other things the uninformed think the movies didn't have then, the things the public flocked to experience although preachers tried to stop them? Or Prohibition to control the populace in 1930, only to lose all control? You can hardly find a more "let the good times roll" decade than the 1920s, and even the Great Depression couldn't stop the craziness. :D Of course that was in America. According to this movie, brainless fuddy-duddies were living in the past in Britain. This was remade as Fast and Loose in 1954.

Tom Walls as the Major makes the picture, but the rest of the cast is very good also. Roger Livesay would get his big break in Michael Powell's THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP. Yvonne Arnaud would end her film career in Jacques Tati's excellent MON ONCLE.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?"

Marguerite looked like the queen in the clothes she wore on the train. I've seen photos of Elizabeth, the present queen's mother, in a very similar outfit. (Edit: Just read Marguerite was one of the Queen Mother's names. She had corgis, the first came to her home in 1933, but did she have a peke?)

Peter and Barbara Wyckham plan to travel by railway from London to a country house in Somerset, but Peter misses the train. Another intending traveller in a similar plight is Marguerite Hickett, an old friend of Peter's from the days before their marriages. They decide to hire a motor car and drive to Somerset, but the car breaks down and they seek refuge at the local inn. Only one bedroom is available, and as it is very clear that the landlady, Mrs Spoker, will not admit an unmarried couple, Peter and Marguerite check in as husband and wife. Barbara jumps to the conclusion that Peter and Marguerite have run away together. First her parents, Major and Mrs Bone, and then Marguerite's husband and finally Barbara descend on the inn. It becomes clear to everyone that Peter and Marguerite are blameless, and both couples are reconciled.

I can't understand what the big deal is about two people not married to each other traveling together. Was that so unusual in those days? And why all the fuss and subterfuge at the inn? Why not just announce who they were, and get 2 single rooms? Funny how they tried to pretend to be a couple and in doing so, get deeper and deeper into trouble. By the way, at 1:17:09 The male lead actor doesn't have very good teeth. He can't afford a good dentist?
