A Curlew Calls charts the progress of an innovative partnership project to boost Curlew populations in the East of England. The project is led by Natural England and involves the BTO, Pensthorpe Conservation Trust, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, Royal Air Force, Defence Infrastructure Organisation, and the Ken Hill and Sandringham Estates. The project takes eggs laid by curlew on airfields, then rears and releases them in the right kinds of habitats for them to thrive. 79 young birds were released in Norfolk in 2021 after being reared at Pensthorpe, and they have been monitored post-release by BTO staff who ringed birds with uniquely coded colour flags and tagged a number with GPS and radio tags.

Love these birds and I'm so privileged that I see them on a daily basis in the summer months as I live on the west pennine moors

I can't remember ever hearing them but I heard about them a lot when I was young. Now fota wildlife park have been going out into the wild to collect the eggs and now they have 31 birds but they still have more eggs to hatch and that's brilliant news.

This video made my day way better, thanks a lot! This kind of projects we need more in all over the world. The populations of curlews have declined in whole Europe as so many populations of other wader species. Waders are difficult group to study because they usually live in difficult habitats and their plumage makes them so inconspicuous. That's the reason why we don't have a lot of knowledge about many waders and we don't know how to help them. We should act right now! Otherwise in 2050 (or something like that) we are watching the last individuals of many european waders. At that point we can't do anything anymore, just sit on our couches and looking how almost all of european waders are dying out. What we need? We need more research, more refurbishment and maintaining of good environments, we need hunting of invasive species but also hunting of foxes etc. We need projects that helps species to success and we need volunteers. But how can we do that? We need support and funding to carry out everything, simply we need money. So, the key is to get government and the people to understand that biodiversity is vital for all of us.

Let’s hope that providing the habitat along with predator control helps this iconic species. We must learn lessons from our managed grouse moors that have the highest populations of successful breeding Eurasian Curlew.

Can one one please help me! I’m England Peak District area around Macclesfield. My dad found a curlew chick on the road at night on its own just now! What should I do help it by keeping it on its own or putting it with the chickens we have that have just had chicks of it’s own? Or go back up the road to the spot where it was found a let it go to try and call out to its mum and dad??? From pics I’ve seen it looks very young it’s about 5cm body size 7-15cm with legs fully extended, with specials all over. Can anyone help me to figure out what to do with it???
