I don't know why, but I still hold out some hope that Quentyn survived. Or maybe the only reason he appears in ADWD is to release the dragons. Unless George finishes the books we may never know for sure.

I like to perscibe to the "quentyn is alive" theory even though I know its a long shot. Mostly my reasoning comes from the fact that when you use a whip that's been set on fire it shoots a burst of fire a metre long into the air when it cracks, which apart from being dope as hell, would possibly be quite intimidating to an adolescent dragon imo. But meh, wait and see I guess. Anyway, very much enjoyed your reading of this chapter, your reading of the whole book really, glad your channel was recommended ty ty

I read summaries of Quentyn's story arc before listening to these chapters but I wasn't prepared for how tragic it was. At every point, Quentyn is aware how slim his chances of success really are but in the end his pride and his sense of duty push him on regardless. His death reminds me a lot of Ajax's death as portrayed by Sophocles, with Ajax also feeling this immense sense of shame about returning to his father as a failure. If Quentyn were really alive it would defeat the whole point of his arc IMO.

Fear of shame was so big that he actually tried to steal 2 dragons... "What will they say of me in Dorne," killed him... At first I looked at him as combination of book-street smart (so Wise person) but last 2 Quentyn chapters convinced me that Gerris is wiser than him, Quentyn has been blinded by his fears of shame to the point of losing his "wisdom"... Sad thing is he doesn't know that Aegon is already trying to ally with Dorne... RIP to careful/shy frog who somehow got balls at the end of his life to tame most dangerous creature of world...

Aside from Quentyn being completly out of his depth. There is something very intresting about Danys dragons in dance. I think they grew wild because they hit puberty, and just like any hormon filled teenager they went cray-cray. What is intresting to me is Viserion and Rheagal, Viserion has always been Danys calmest, laziest and most playfull dragon, it also loves to sleep around a peach tree a symbol of fertility In eastern mythology. She probably layed eggs in that nest she made, and these idiots just went into theyr den and threatened theyr clutch, once again the dragons apear as monsters, when in reality theyr are just animals protecting theyr young. Im also doubtfull that Dragons are hermaphrodites, because no reptilians are. They are however rather dificult to identify, besides secondary and third sexual characteristics( size, color brightness, territorial agressivness) most of theyr fun bits are hidden inside, with Leopard Geckos for example you have to turn them over and look for distinct V shaped anal pores and bulges near hind legs. The idea that Reptiles are hermaphrodites is also a misonception people in medieval times had. So tio know presicely all you gota do is know what to look for and get under a dragons ass. Good luck. In conclusion Septon Barth is a hack. Dragons are misunderstood and Tyrion being foremost expert on dragons and with his small size will be able to get accurate research data.

Yet... maybe the world still needs three dragons to balance itself out and inside the pyramid they would have been slain. So Quentyn might still be a hero.

Preston Jacobs is right, Quentin is not dead. The clues are all there. He can see himself burning when those that get burnt have their eyes pop. The whip is old and oiled causing the oil to leak onto him and catch fire, so he sees himself covered in fire but isn't hurt.

Instead of going back home to Dorne lets break into pyramid,kill her guards and try to steal a dragon.

So the big question about this chapter... is Quentyn alive, and a body-double burned beyond recognition died in Barristan's next chapter... aaaarg i don't know? asoiaf has plenty of fakeout deaths, and plenty of real deaths. Excluding prologues and epilogues, its very rare for a character to die at the end of their own chapters, and when it does happen (Cat and Jon), it doesn't seem particularly permanent? On the flip side, do characters about to have a fakeout death get beat over the head beforehand about how stupid their plan is and how they're definitely going to die? Davos, when he goes to White Harbor? I guess Stannis, assuming the Pink Letter is fake (though he's not a PoV). Brienne a little bit, when the Elder Brother tells her to abandon her quest while she still can a few chapters before Stoneheart hangs her? I suppose the real question is whether it works better for the story if Quentyn dies, reminding the reader of how vulnerable even the protagonists are in this world, or if he lives on, horrifically disfigured and in agony, a living reminder of how war sucks. Or maybe it comes down to Doran's plans... I think we can all agree that Quentyn's gotta fail, but what qualifies as failure. Like, Quentyn's goal is to bring home a dragon, but is that Doran's goal? Cuz its really really weird for the Rhoynish to want dragons - about as weird as it is for the Golden Company to support Targaryens. If Quentyn comes home horrifically burned and riding a dragon, will that be a complete disaster from Doran's perspective? (aaaarg Doran's plans make no sense...)

You Quentin survivor hopefuls blow my mental almost as much as Stannis worshippers. Quentin is dead man, he gets set on fire. We get it strait from the horses mouth (or dragons mouth should I say). Then it’s confirmed after this by several people. It’s also what one would expect from trying something like this. In fact I think the only reason Danny is alive is bcuz of some special magical property she gained from going thru the fire ritual that brought the eggs to life. The way it describes Quentin getting flamed here is the same way it describes it from Danny’s pov chapter in the fighting pit with drogon “a furnace wind” And we know that many people saw Danny on fire or at least her hair and our next Danny chapter her hair is gone, same way her hair is gone after emerging from the pyre that brought the eggs to life. During the heat of battle from character POV furnace wind equals flamethrower. Of which everyone dies from, except danny simply bcuz she underwent the blood ritual with her dragons. I think this may come into play later as well when these two same dragons end up with other people (Faegon and Euron? 🤔) The dragons won’t actually be able to set her aflame, maybe just her hair. Just a theory tho. Quentin being dead, no theory. He got burnt alive, let it go (What was the ultimate plan anyway, u put a dragon in a cage and then whT, get burnt alive anyway? Like, bad plan from the start)
