Majuular has joined Civvie 11, Accursed Farms and GrimBeard on my "must watch immediately" list--though they mostly cover games outside the genres that I like and play.
@@Majuular You're very entertaining and getting better. Plus I find older rpg's, adventure games and whatever else falls outside my wheelhouse interesting to learn about...just not play. If you started doing content on 2000's pop music or the current internet drama it would be different. No one is THAT entertaining.
Yessss, now everyone can learn about Fromsoft's best NPC. Fat Mole. One thing I find interesting about these games that isn’t mentioned in the video is the completion ratings for each level. The completion % is tracked for each zone, which is a bit weird considering the loot is semi-random. Some enemies have guaranteed drops but most have a loot pool, including bosses. A boss may drop one of three or so good weapons, or nothing at all. But apart from tracking secrets and items you’ve collected, it tracks how many enemies you’ve killed, because while enemies respawn there’s actually only a set amount of them, so it’s possible to kill every single enemy in the game and have a completely empty tower to explore! Some rare/unique enemies, or some that have a rare drop, will only spawn after you’ve killed X amount of enemies in the zone, or in a certain room. So it’s a nice incentive to kill as many enemies as you can because you never know what you’ll get. As well as enemies in the first game increasing your stats when you defeat them.
I really enjoy learning about how a given studio's DNA winds it way through their catalog of games. Details large and small, like the curse jar giggle sound effect. Design thinking like "poison swamps create tension and reframe the exploration experience". All this stuff that you can only see clearly if you explore many games going back into the catalog. I love ER and DS. Your work exploring and documenting their predecessors grounds my experience of those games and connects them to a very tangible lineage that I wouldn't be privvy to otherwise. Good stuff.
I'm pretty sure Miyazaki commented previously on how much he likes poison swamps, which tells me he repeatedly forgets how much he likes poison swamps before he makes the next one, which... explains a lot.
@@Majuular He recently said in an interview that he has now embraced that aspect of himself. Which is very good to hear, and has horrifying ramifications for future games.
@DemonLordSparda I'm gonna go on a whim and say because he's Japanese it could be a different context, The whole toxic area in every game fucking with the players, or his corruption to feet.
False, Baroque was literally shiren the wanderer but in 1st person. Many items and systems are direct parodies from shiren. At least in psx baroque. Shadow tower is unique even among kingfield
I was on a trip to Newfoundland for an event with my girlfriend's family recently. The weather sucked and my girlfriend wasn't feeling well so we didnt get to do much, but it was a great opportunity to watch a bunch of your videos. I love your presentation and the fascinating insights you give into leaser-known games like this. Honestly makes me realize how simplistic my own content is. So glsd to see you thriving in this niche of RU-vid. Happily signed up to the Patreon. Keep up the great work man!
Majestic!! Now I'm eagerly awaiting: "A Dark Journey Through The Adventures of Cookie & Cream" ^-^ Only then shall we discover the true Kuri Kuri Mix that only FromSoftware is capable of surprising us with... *Laughs ominously for seemingly no reason*
An instant like and click from me. I'm a lucky SOB that actually owns Shadow Tower physically and on my Vita. The summer of 2019 playing Kingsfield IV and Shadow Tower back to back are some of my favorite gaming memories. This video is going to introduce a lot more people to these old games which is always a great thing, dungeon crawling survival horror games need all the love they can get!
Majuular i have something i must admit, i would gage that i am 1/4 of your Kings Field Retrospective views. over the past months, youve been a narrator, sleep aid, and entertainment. thank you
I feel like I've come to have a feel of what sort of games you'd enjoy, so maybe give Baroque (the Sega Saturn version) a gander. If you're unfamiliar, it plays a lot like the Kingsfield series but the main draw is its distinct art style and narrative. I have to be honest some areas of that game made me want to throw my PC out the window but maybe that's in a good way. Either way, scrumptious video as always!
24:03 I step away from an RLM vid (one I've seen countless times no doubt) only to hear that serenading laughter I'm all too familiar with. Thank you for these Riches, Mr. Majuular.
Love to see the recognition you’ve been getting, you really deserve it. Well researched and thoughtful commentary along with the perfect amount of internet brain rot. You’re doing great things
The amount of work and patient deliberation that goes into your videos is astounding. Extremely engaging content about video games I would never have found or played myself! Bravo
I love your videos and your channel. Aside from how robust and insightful your analysis is, I really appreciate the little touches of humor you chose to weave throughout. Thanks so much for making such awesome content.
I am loving these retrospectives, you have a very balanced way of approaching these games that highlights what they do well while also playfully discussing what their flaws. It makes for a very enjoyable listen, and it's clear you do a lot of work and research for these videos. Very great stuff! The only thing that would be really cool, not sure how feasible it is, but if the articles and stuff you're finding during your research could be linked in the description or somewhere, that would be awesome. I'd love to be able to read through some of this stuff. Also you are a king for listing what music you use in the video in the description, thank you.
NEW MAJUULAR YAY! AND ITS LONG AS FUCKK I can't wait to fall asleep listening to this a few nights in a row before I actually absorb it for all it is during the day xD thanks man
Sheesh even on my phone on a diff yt acct it always brings me back to this video lol I promise I’ll play it myself already if I ever get this video out of my head
Let's goooooooo, I played King's field thanks to you and Ironpineapple. I tried Shadow Tower Abyss but gave up on it halfway through. I'm going to try again thanks to this video
I couldn't wait any longer on the Ultima retrospectives so I watched Finntroverts (which I'll watch your takes of course when they arrive!) But THIS is what you've been up to? Oh man - thank you - going to be a great weekend enjoying every second of this!!
I hope it lives up to your expectations! I haven't had a chance to check out Finntrovert's videos yet, but I've seen em mentioned a lot on my videos and people are really positive on them. I'll have to give them a watch soon!
I really appreciate these retrospectives. I don't have the time or patience to really dive into these games some a nice 2 hour immersion is a great way to experience something I have probably won't go back to unless it is particularly alluring. As a side note, thank you for providing a list to the music you use. I have been hunting for "Cybil Returns" for a few months and I couldn't remember where it was from. I even thought it might be Silent Hill, but I could never find it on the soundtracks I have. That's a really liminal sounding piece of music and it puts me in a certain mood.
00:56 Just another 11 months to wait... Speaking in jest naturally, but it is still neat to see Lost Kingdoms make an appearance after our little chats
Watching this again since I just went through Shadow Tower 1, and he says you weren't sure if you hit an enemy in the original King's Field games. I remember this confusing me before playing through the series myself last month, but now I think I get it. I seem to recall he said he was colorblind, so he doesn't notice the subtle red glowing of enemies taking damage in the original King's Field games. Wild!
I must have watched your kings field video 100 times no joke it’s my go too I can’t sleep video at one point I had it on in the background every night lolll so glad you have done shadow tower would love a hungry ghosts video
Man. I gotta say, I appreciate this type of content in these turbulent and hype-driven times. You have such a nice approach and demeanor, so thank you my dude! 😊
You have been my window to so many amazing things! I would absolutely love an eternal ring video! I've never heard of it and would love nothing more than to watch you cover it!
I gotta say my only prolonged experience with From Software titles was playing the first Armored Core demo a hundred times and watching my friend who was addicted to King's Field 2 play through it a few times this video captivated me. Love all your content but something special about videos on topics I'm very ill informed and uninterested in yet a few minutes in and I feel like I'm experiencing that passion through you. Much as I'm excited for the next coverage of an Ultima title this was very much worth the break.
I love that these guys toiled away on relatively obscure games for a long time, stuck with it through low sales, and were finally rewarded when the Souls series took off. Now everything they do is a big success.
I played about ten minutes of Abyss on PCSX2 once before it crashed, while I was really high on edibles and unable to think well enough to troubleshoot, and it's been in the back of my mind ever since. I'm gonna be revisiting this one more often than most I think
honestly love what you do with your long for videos on these older games I would probably never play and the ultima series has been my favorite videos keep it up man
Theres this weird green goblin looking dude you can only find in one area of Saga Frontier. He'll sell you one of the best swords in the game along with some other items (one being required for an optional quest). But he only accepts LP (life points) and he permanently removes your max LP on your main character. In Saga Frontier, when characters HP hits 0, they fall unconscious and lose 1 LP. A character has a max set amount of LP to be managed and restored between battles. If they are constantly felled in battle, or if you leave their unconscious body on the ground to get smacked, they will run out causing the character to die. This results in an immediate game over. I always found this vendor facinating because you're removing your main characters survivability in battle by purchasing items. Unlike the example here in the video, you can't top up using a potion, you're literally crippling your character for gear.
there are channels that I adore, and its mainly just for the content too, like niche things that im hyper fixated on in a moment, and low and behold I got another stop between many videos to enjoy.
amazing video! i must say tho as a self admitted super fan of the original shadow tower, that you failed to mention the super rare enemies that very rarely ever spawn all together such as the king hopper and the damned angel. you need to find these if you want a full beastiary and to 100% each area.the respawning of enemies, and semi random loot drops they provide always made this game so interesting to me in subsequent playthroughs!anyways great video man, and if you werent already aware of these enemies then you should see how aggravating it is to try and find them in game!
Hearing you start out with an honest to god pistol is the most astounding endorsement of Shadow Tower: Abyss in my mind. It's such a neat idea to mix modern elements with fantasy like that, and I wish more works were so bold with that.
Having guns be limited by ammo, slow to reload, hard to aim at a distance, but extremely powerful when used really is the best way to balance them. It's the same feeling you get when you hipfire at a target and nail it the first time.
I found out about your channel a week ago and I love it. Seeing how you enjoy the King's Fields and Shadow Tower games, I wonder, have you played Lunacid ?
Always loved how Abyss is a weird From Soft horror RPG but also you’re an army dude who brings in guns. …And the guns actually work like guns in that they absolutely decimate enemies.
Was just looking for a video to fall asleep to and here you are to save the day! Gonna fall asleep to you now, and once I wake up, I'm gonna give the video a real watch. 😎👌 Thanks for this!
Been waiting for this since I played Shadow Tower after the Kings Field vid, excited to watch this one and see what you feel about this game I kinda love
I didn't expect to hear Jarred from Avalanch reviews lmao, caught me off guard while I was half asleep. Had to check the description to see if I was just hearing things lol
Downloaded this on PSN a few years ago on sale and was really confused. Thank you for the excellent video as always! This game is way more interesting than I first thought.
These games are always special, but I've always found King's field so difficult to get into. But there was an indie game called Lunacid that completely enthralled me when it came out. I'll need to play these sooner rather than later on my list. Thank you for your amazing content. I love binging your content over and over while I'm working so thank you so much
From Soft and creature animation, at least from my perspective, shines so much. Shadow tower abyss is so cool, and why it still looks good, with creatures going about other task before they encounter you (such as the insects working). The extra step of having a dismemberment mechanic with the monster going into different movements. I think they've known a good way to allocate resources.
