The Letterman Podcast's host Mike Chisholm asked if I might put something together to help commemorate his 100th episode.
Rather than select highlights and best-of conversations, I decided to try to craft a behind-the-scenes narrative of Dave’s talk show history as told by many of Mike’s podcast guests - the writers, producers, musicians, and network executives who worked for and with Dave throughout his 35-year tenure at NBC and CBS.
The narrative is distributed in four parts:

Some details become blurred from long-dormant memories - a Viewer Mail letter is actually a separate, stand-alone comedy piece; a timeline might be off by a year or two. But the substance of those memories are precise and vivid, and they offer a heretofore untold look into the creation of material as well as fresh perspectives from the personalities that helped mold a culture-defining legacy.

Late Show with David Letterman was an entire generation’s “Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show.” We are so proud of this collaboration with Don Giller. Thanks Don, your take on how to do this was really strong and effective.

Over 6 hours of uploads in the past week and a half, how fortunate we are! Reminds me of circa 2016 and this channel being my primary entertainment. Thank you for the many, many hours of laughs and music and conversation over the years. Your work brings me joy and I know I'm far from alone in that.

Holy cow. 18:12 - this is why the show was so great. And this is why I love this series and SFM over on that "other show" that has all the behind-the-scenes stuff about how comedy is crafted. Seinfeld's coffee show, same. Just so, so good.

I wish RU-vid -- or someone, somewhere -- had a clip of the first time Letterman met Dick Cavett. It happened in the early days of the NBC show, 1982 or '83, maybe. Dave was out with his microphone, doing his Steve Allen man-in-the-street thing, looking for trouble. He barged into a situation where Cavett was sitting in a chair -- maybe it was a make-chair or something, I don’t remember -- and Dave walked up to Cavett uninvited, stuck the mic in Cavett's face and tried to get some rude comedy out of the situation, but Cavett didn't like it and memorably put young Dave in his place.

It wasn’t the first time Dick was on the show, he was in on the joke, and I uploaded it was part of my Dick Cavett on Letterman collection. Easy to find if you searched for it.

@@dongiller If you're referring to this video -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jDqT2jAfTeU.html -- the scene is not there. It didn’t happen in the studio. I think it happened in a different building, possibly the NBC corporate building that Dave invaded from time to time to put the big shots on the spot (provided he could get past the security goons at the front door).

@@johndimick1767 The only corporate building Dave “invaded” was the G. E. building shortly after the company bought RCA. Yes, that’s the collection to which I’m referring. It includes every Dick Cavett appearance on the show. What you’re remembering never happened.

@@dongillerYes, the GE building. Those visits were great. I'm sure the encounter between Dave and Dick happened as I described. It wasn't a scheduled thing. Cavett wasn't in any way a "guest" on the show for this encounter. And the animosity from Cavett was palpable. I was -- an still am -- a diehard fan of both men. I watched Cavett religiously when I was a teen (I'm 70 now) and I was awestruck by Dave's on-air send-ups of the format and seldom missed a show in the early years of Late Night, so seeing these two interact that was amazing. But you say it never happened, so I'm going to drop it now. I'm going to continue enjoying your channel, though. All the best to you.
