The old town, with its well-preserved Venetian architecture, charming cafes, and bustling marketplaces, offered a delightful maze of exploration. The centerpiece, the majestic Koules Fortress, stood proudly at the harbor, offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. Wandering further, she discovered the Morosini Fountain, an exquisite piece of Venetian craftsmanship that still flows with water.
The old town’s lively atmosphere was infectious. Local artisans displayed their crafts in small shops, while the scent of freshly baked bread and the sound of traditional Cretan music filled the air. Inday couldn’t resist stopping at a local taverna, where she savored traditional Greek dishes like moussaka and tzatziki, accompanied by a glass of raki, the local spirit.
Knossos: The Heart of Minoan Civilization
A short drive from Heraklion brought Inday to the archaeological wonder of Knossos. As she approached the site, she was struck by the grandeur of the ancient palace, which stood as a testament to the advanced Minoan civilization that thrived here around 2000 BC.
Guided tours revealed the intricate layout of the palace, with its complex network of corridors and rooms. Inday marveled at the vibrant frescoes depicting scenes of Minoan life, the iconic charging bull, and the graceful figures of dancers. The grandeur of the Throne Room, with its alabaster throne and majestic griffins, transported her to an era of mythical kings and legendary labyrinths.
