Hello, an Athenian here commenting on the food topic. I've been watching all these Athenian food-tour videos here and ALL of them go to the EXACT same restaurants/cafes, and order the exact same things. Don't be afraid to experiment. The quality of Athenian restaurants and taverns is high. Try something new. See where the locals go, find that small, hidden tavern in the neighborhood you are staying at. Ask the locals, even on the street. They will be happy to point you to their favorite place.

There are no burgers in Athens. Only real food. Do not waste the chance. Your boys have to learn how to eat. Food in Greece is going to be totally different. You can't go to Greece and expect to eat a good or better burger than where you are used to having them. Because burgers are considered to be junk food. Try the real deal. @Lovelyone1

Biggest Mistake people make - go to Athens in peak season! You can avoid many mistakes mentioned in the Video if you go between end September-April. Just went there with the family in March and it was my best Athens experience so far. No lines, no Reservations, spontanous Restaurant visists, very relaxed people, 25°C and sunshine - just perfect ❤

I believe the breaking point is in June. Last year, we visited Athens early June: it was wonderful, 25-ish degrees with quick showers, a bit crowded but not overly so: we went to the Acropolis at 5 pm just after the museum and we walked in like a breeze...two weeks later, when we came back to Athens at the end of our trip to catch our flight back home, it was disney-land type of crowd and 34-ish degrees. Glad we came just before summer break!
@BoogieBubble
@BoogieBubble 7 дней назад
@@ShadowSolaris As a local this is not always the case. I say is 50-50 every year to get an early summer from the last month of sping and June is very very hot. I guess you had luck on your side friend.
@Robert89349
@Robert89349 6 дней назад
@@ShadowSolaris You were very lucky. June can be much hotter. Today May 22nd in Athens, it is already 30 degrees, with absolutely no breeze and full of sand from the Sahara desert in the atmosphere. Plus, this year tourism has rebounded more than 100% since COVID, with visitors from the cruiseships flocking the city and its sites from around 09:00. As a hospitality employee, I would say that the best season to visit is March-April, October-November. If you have to visit in the summer, then it should be August. It is always less busy in Athens and especially around August 15th, Athens is empty because Athenians are on vacation.

Agree with your advice. Went to the Acropolis Museum first and then the Acropolis. Went the first week of April 2024, had advanced tickets for 8 am and then just walked in with no line as well as very few people . Have an early time to go to the Acropolis and get up extra early and go to the top of Philopopus Hill and then it is a short walk to the Acropolis. 3. Go to the top of Lycabettus Hill. 4. While you are at the acropolis, don't miss the other attractions around surroundings (Filopappou, Socrate prisons, etc.) so you won't have to climb there the day after.. Don't think the airport is close or small. It is quite a journey to get there and once you are there too. Don't think there is a lot to see at the acropolis, in archeological sites or in museums in general - most of these places are relatively expensive to visit but only keep you busy for one hour.

Also, paying for the water already, I didn't feel pressured to order some other, likely more expensive beverage along with my food like you would be in some middle european countries. Likewise, if you are from those places and accustomed to ordering, say sparkling water together with your meal, don't do it, it will be far more expensive than the water.

Thank you for pronouncing epharisto. When our class went there in 1988 we assumed the Spanish pronunciation and we probably sounded like idiots, or Americans, probably same difference to some Europeans😂. I didn't learn the real pronunciation until I watched a show on Greek on a PBS channel, though the person on that show pronounced the last syllable with a long o versus a Short o. I don't remember the subway, that must be fairly recent or a casualty of my 1988 memory. Athens was The first stop in my first overseas trip. A big culture shock for me was seeing all the military with machine guns in the airport. They had our class of 40 put all of our luggage and a pile and had a German Shepherd sniff it. Then they put in a box with drugs and the dog found that. Not having found something similar to our luggage we were allowed to continue on. One of our professors encouraged us to get to the Acropolis early and bribed guard with some cash to let you in before they open so we can experience it. Crowdfree. I didn't try that but some classmates did.

Athens, the islands, the sun, the sea and such are very nice but Greece has a lot more to offer. Like even winter vacation in Pelion, Zagorochoria and you will have the best treatment for supporting less touristy places while enjoying the most traditional Greek stuff. Actually mostly us, the locals, are visiting these places and it's a shame to see only the popular destinations to be promoted, even by the Greek state itself.

Actually, they could have done something for these drug addicts but it is all part of a plan. The center gradually loses its worth this way as more and more locals sell their property wanting urgently to move away from petty crime. Then big hotel chains and investors from abroad come and buy cheap. When all the center will be bought by entrepreneurs and multinational companies, I am sure all these drug addicts will be removed instantly. The city center was once inhabited by locals and middle class, now it is destined to be a tourist merry go round. Are we upset?? Yes, we are outraged but there are so little we can do to fight big money and corruption.

It is a huge problem in the inner city. Also there are areas where I do not go anymore. Greece is on the edge of europe, therefore the problem with illegal migration is terrible. I understand why the Greek vigorously push those masses back. In parts of the country it seems like you are in the worst parts of Africa and Near East.

@joannaheart8167
@joannaheart8167 9 дней назад
No, opa in Greek is like an exclamation of joy, it doesn't mean grandpa. We use it a lot in different contexts but sometimes when tourists use it without knowing when it is appropriate, it sounds awkward and funny. Walter's kids are still young but he'd make a great grandpa.

Hmm. I've been to Athens a few times and, to be honest, I find the Parthanon one of the most disappointing tourist traps in a country I love. I would never have gone back to it, but various companions insisted. (Oddly enough, many people seem to have a similar reaction to the Giza Pyramids, which awed me.)

I liked Athens a lot when I visited it in 2023. But.... the Acropolis was not one of my favourite places in Europe... too overhyped. Acropolis carries more an idea of democracy and philosophy, but the physical place is rather disappointing (unlike other sites in Europe as the Collosseum or the Alhambra). Go to the suburbs of Athens by using tram f.x....

Absolute BS. The Acropolis is thee Favorite Monument of all my Non Greek Friends to visit. You don’t understand it’s History, this is why you are saying this. Also, the Acropolis has technically 5 Temples & 2 Theaters & also the Best View of the City. Were you expecting to be able to walk inside of it perhaps? 🤔 The Site is Stunning, that Rock Formation is incredible in the Athenian Valley, with the surrounding Seven Hills! You are Nuts 😅

@@SpartanLeonidas1821 Iagree about the view totally. And please do not think that I have no respect for Greek culture. As a physicist I love the mathematical and scientific ideas, Grecce gave to the world, and the philosophic ideas, too. What the world would be without a Puthagoras, an Archimedes, an Euklid, an Aristoteles,..... and so on? What I mean is that this cultural greatness is not carried by the Acropolis to people. May be it cannot. Haha, and I even learnt to read Greek through my stuies (I cannot speak or understand though.

I don't know if this still exists nowadays, but when I visited the Acropolis few years ago as a solo male traveler, an old Greek guy approached me just when I exited the site, started to befriend with me and then led me to a Tavern which he claimed to be the owner .. when I entered this place, I found myself inside a dark bar. The entrance doors were closed behind me, and I was sited next to two beautiful Russian girls who immediately started a conversation with me and tried to persuade me into buying them alcoholic drinks .. When the bill arrived, I found out these were extremely over-priced drinks .. So watch out .. the place is infested with con arts lurking for their prey ..
