The ideal way to order a nasi kandar would be first to tell them you would like to have nasi kandar, then choose the type of rice (white or bryiani - not all places have briyani tho) then choose the protein and sides, eg. Fried chicken, black beef (sounds weird but its delicious), squid, then the vegetables, and then ask them for mixed gravy/sauce or kuah campur in Malay (pronounced champur, C is pronounced as CH in Malay). What makes Nasi Kandar special is the mixed gravy, its pretty unique to the region. Hope u guys get another chance to try nasi kandar.

Nasi Kandar is great with Fish Curry esp in Penang, fish eggs, sotong (squid) , beef rendang, or more tender different types of curry chicken. Vege like steamed or chopped ladies fingers, or green veggies and top with Pappadum crackers goes well.

If in Georgetown, Penang I will inevitably do these two things : 1. Breakfast at Transfer Road - "roti canai ayam set" or "roti goyang" and teh tarik 2. Lunch at Kapitan Restaurant, Chulia Street - chicken tandoori and garlic naan bread washed with their "susu badam" (almond milk)

The Hokkien mee you had is called Prawn Mee in Kuala Lumpur. In Kuala Lumpur, Hokkien Mee is black in colour with thick yellow noodles. Btw the Nasi Kandar should have had mixed gravy and some more vegetables. Should try again at Hameediyah's Nasi Kandar. Theirs is much more authentic.

Yes correct in selangor / kl we named it prawn noodles. But in penang they called it hokkien noodles. But the confusion starts here. In kl or selangor hokkien noodles are dark soy and light soy sauce with pork lard, vege, fish cake, prawns, meat.

I personally like to eat my ABC unmixed because mixing makes the ice melt faster and I also like it when every scoop you take from a different side of an unmixed ABC is a different taste with different ingredients being scooped. 😋

@@2Passports1Dream Yeah it has been really hot lately, so maybe that's why the ABC melted so quickly. Since you guys have a sweet tooth, you can try this dessert called Muah Chee. It's similar to the Japanese dessert mochi which is steamed sticky glutinous rice dough cut into small pieces coated with sugary grinded peanut. You can probably find a stall that sells it in gurney drive in the evening

And mix your drinks before drinking. Drinks served in Malaysia are not mixed, you have to do it yourself otherwise sugar will all be at the bottom
@jamiecampbell1271
@jamiecampbell1271 2 года назад
Haha the fun part is it being unmixed. Drop the straw to the bottom and you get a hit of super strong sweet warm choclately goodness, then as you lift the straw higher you can modulate the strength towards an refreshing hit of ice at the top. Try sliding the straw while you suck. Also after it seems like the drink is over, go back ot it a few minutes later after the ice has melted a bit and you get a bonus refreshing icey milky goodness to cleanse your month.

Nasi Kandar... the way to go about it, go through the counter u see all the different dishes, the server usually will ask "nasi biasa ka nasi bryani" means white rice or bryani rice... then proceed for the type of kuah "sauce" u want... most general, u can just say, "kuah campur" means mix sauces... then u can proceed for the proteins and vege or condiment u want... as for kuah or sauce, my fav, is madu(honey-a sweet based sauce), kurma and curry...

The asam mentioned with the drink, Asam is malay language to the dried sour plum added to the blended lime juice. Sometimes asam are also added into umbra. However, Asam in asam laksa is referring to tamarind. The sour taste of the soup is mainly due to tamarind and unripe pineapple.

I don't think people use tamarind in asam laksa, probably just for an added sour taste. the asam in asam laksa refers instead it's asam gelugur or arcinia atroviridis (i asked uncle wiki). it's the main ingredient in making laksa. but idk how people in penang make their laksa, because kedah & perlis laksa use mainly asam gelugur.

Finally you tried Ice Kacang (ABC)! Actually this is the Penang version of it, that actually has "atap chi" (Atap palm fruit) that is usually pickled with sugar that gives a twist other States of Malaysia don't have. In the 80s the primary school kids even learned the song of Ice-Kacang. 😂 that is how famous it is as a local ice-shaved dessert. I think the one you had is rootbeer with rose syrup. In Perak they usually use gula Melaka + rose syrup as the mix. The look alike but taste slightly different. If you see green ones they are usually cendol. Sometimes comes in bright pink. Ice-Kacang is meant to have it "sloppy" to the point you can even drink the dessert up, just like Ramly burger the famous "sloppy joe". And yes, Asam Laksa (of different types from different states), one of the main ingredient is pineapple. By the way, many Malaysians (probably because of Asam Laksa) actually do not mind the "Hawaian pizza" that is pizza with pineapple on it haha.

It's really tasty and I will not miss this dish whenever Im in Penang. Try it if you have the opportunity later. Hope u guys have a nice time in Malaysia and please come back.

Everything looked very interesting. But, the one thing that caught my eye particularly was the assam laksa because it's the only dish of the ones you showcased that I've had. And, it was fairly recent as I ate it for a video that I filmed. And, I couldn't help but compare. Mine was completely different. The broth was only slightly sour; and, it featured tuna. It didn't have pineapple in it but slivers of cucumber. It was fishy; and, that was the dominant flavor. Plus, the noodles were not thick but very thin. Thin rice noodles.

@2Passports1Dream 2 года назад
Was it a Penang dish? Apparently they can vary soooo much depending on the area that they are made in! This one is known for being rather sour, for example!
@Vablonsky
@Vablonsky 2 года назад
@@2Passports1Dream The assam laksa that I got was from a restaurant here in the U.S. And, it identified the laksa as being Penang style. I think the difference is simply due to the fact that Malaysian food overseas is bound to be different than that from the source (i.e., Penang itself). Anyway, thanks for the video. Safe travels and keep up the good work.

that nasi kandar looks so sad lol. as someone pointed out, queue up at the food counter - choose your rice - white/biryani - choose whatever u want to eat - proteins, vege, etc - MIX ALL THE GRAVY :D just tell them "kuah/kari campur" (pronounced 'coo-ah/curry chumpur') and get yourself a nice delicious plate of nasi kandar - don't forget the pappadoms

The Cendol you eat in Melaka is not the original. There are others in Melaka that are as simple as this chedol in Penang. This one is the common one which you can get in Melaka or anywhere in Malaysia.

The first thing u did right with the Hokkien Mee or they call it Prawn noodle is to finish the soup at the very end. The correct way to eat the noodle is to scoop the soup and noodle in soup spoon and eat it together. Same goes with Laksa, prawn noodle, curry noodle etc. The broth is the soul of every noodle in Penang food that's why the hawker seller don't serve u extra soup(if u notice). Not many Malaysian know this except Penangite. For Nasi kandar, u can try to tell them 'kuah dulu' means mix all the curry sauce in the rice before u choose any dishes(if u like your rice full of curry flavour then u should give it a try). Wish u guys have a nice trip in Malaysia.

Glad you guys give all those famous Penang famous hawker foods a try, the prawn noodle looks good and inside asam laksa is shallot, mint leaf, cucumber, pineapple, kampung fish meat and you shall mix in the black prawn sauce it will make the soup little sweeter but not like sugar sweet it’s more like seafood sweet. Yeah different places serve cendol slightly different but i personally still prefer Melaka cendol as their gula Melaka are more fragrant. ABC are another local favourite cooling desert as Malaysia weather are hot so we love to eat those ice dessert haha 😂 enjoy your stay in Penang and there are plenty more famous foods to try. Tambun biscuit are pretty good too as we usually buy few boxes for family and friends back in KL or other states after a holiday in Penang

Hello Usually when we eat nasi kandar you mixed 5 to 7 gravy together with the rice. Not on individual plate. Once you get all the curries on the rice than choose your protein and vegtable. Remember Nasi Kandar the gravy/ curries are mixed atleast 5 types of them . You eat it the wrong way. Pelita is overated. You can go to Hamideeyah or Deen Nasi Kandar. Most famous is Line Clear Nasi Kandar but too pricey. Should also try roti canai Jalan transfer for breakfast

When you have a bowl of curry with or without meat, you do not pour the whole curry on top of the rice. You scoop on the rice as you eat. Same for the meat.

Malaysians food are authentic and traditionally asians. You can tell by its rich flavors and spices that scream hundreds if not thousand of years of traditions. But never underestimate Malaysians fusion foods, which are combined mixes of malays, indian and chinese influences that are not even available outside Malaysia or Singapore. Examples, roti canai and variants, bak kut teh, teh tarik, cendol, laksa, kaya toast, char kuey teow etc are unique to Malaysia.
