Because to actually make money, you have to have constant work. Very rarely you can get more than 50 plus and only work 40 hours. And as he was standing around doing nothing is about 70% of the time. Very hard to get 2 big tickets back to back.
@LetsDriftMedia
@LetsDriftMedia 4 года назад
@@Sc300autogm not that hard. I averaged 110+ flag hrs at toyota. Our shop was fairly busy most the time.

1. No overtime (that’s a big one) 2. No career advancement. 3. Sucks to do when you’re old. You don’t want to be looking for a new career after 40 so you might as well start a new, better paying career with growth opportunity while you can. 4. It’s a scummy business let’s all be honest. How many people have had a manager give them a peptalk about upselling shit customers don’t need. 5. Weekends 6. Buying tool (or is that a plus?)

I want to be an automotive technician someday! I'm graduating high school this year so I'll probably go through the automotive program at the local community college. They have a partnership with Ford so it will help me get my foot in the door. Than you for this video! It helped me see what it can be like. I am a hustler so I think that this job is a perfect fit. And a lot of people talk bad about flat rate but I think there are pros and cons with any rate of pay. Thanks again!

Nice video! I can totally relate, I work for Toyota too and it definitely has its ups and downs. It’s all about management. Our shop is decent, I have no certs but I still flag 50-60 hours in a 40 hour work week and no I’m not fed. Shop foreman lays out work in the order he wants and you get whatever’s next. What you say is true, one day you get 2-3 hours and the next you’ll flag 20. Just the way it is. Can’t stand warranty, pays nothing for diagnosis. Half the time for R&R. Extra paper work and returning parts. Guys with your level of certs make 80-100k a year and MDT’s at $35 and hour flat rate + bonus make 120k or more a year So for the guys who say automotive is dead they must be working for the wrong shop.
@LetsDriftMedia

I like you man you get it keep hustling. You make as much as you want to in a sense. I understand favoritism and such but at the end of the day. If you work your ass off your going to make money. The people who say this career is dead are usually just old timers used to being fed gravy.

Toyota dealerships look like good places for techs to work. I am currently in high school and enrolled in our automotive program. I found a community college that has Toyotas TTen technician training program, which I am very interested in doing. Wish it was like this at my dealership when I was working as a Toyota tech. I might have stayed in the industry. I was working $15/flat rate hour with a 30 hour guarantee just to be a glorified lube tech with 6 ASE's and 4 years experience. Just ended up burnt out after that experience.

Lol, i feel ya on that. Atm I'm working at a private ran shop. (Alternators, ps pumps, etc) guaranteed 15 per hour, and i make 10% on the labor hours i knock out. It's not terribly bad but being a lube, general , align , install tech it gets old fast

It's very important for people coming into the industry to know that you don't start out turning 40+ a week. It takes time to find your groove. It takes time to get to that certain point.
@DuckQu
@DuckQu 4 года назад
for flat rate right? Just started working at the the dealer last week and my schedule is 47 hrs as a service tech when I move over to flat rate this might be the case.
@dimmn82
@dimmn82 4 года назад
ItsReallyJ Not sure if I am understanding correctly. You are an hourly lube tech and are there for 47 hours a week or you get 47 hours worth of work done? Also keep in mind it depends where you are and what city as well. Some places are busy but customers don’t buy anything and some are busy and customers do buy. It just really all depends.
@DuckQu
@DuckQu 4 года назад
@@dimmn82 I'm scheduled for 47 hours of work a week, so hourly. Im put under "Techniacian" because I'm in the toyota program for school but in basically a lube tech for rn. Flat rate I know it's gonna be tougher to make 40+ hours, but I was saying you meant starting out it would be hard to make 40+ for flat rate work?
@dimmn82
@dimmn82 4 года назад
ItsReallyJ Correct. Mainly because you’ll be lowest on the totem pole. But it also depends on the dealership. If yours hands out the work orders directly to a certain technician then it may be easier for you. At ours they are laid on top of the shop foreman’s tool box and we go get them ourselves. Meaning we take whatever is next. Always have to get the waiters out of the way first. You’ll be having to diagnose things unless that is being done by someone else. It’s just a whole different ballgame. Just remember this, them promoting you is saying they have faith in you that you can do it. So that means you really can do it. Believe in your self and your abilities. Everything will fall into place over time. My best advice from my personal mistakes is only have one truck account with debt on it at any given time. Having to pay multiple trucks each week really sucks.

Interesting, porters would do the PDIs at the dealership that I used to work at while in college, but yours seem much more in depth. We used to just put on plate frames/inserts, vin etches, center caps / wheel covers, check fluids and take the cars and trucks out of transport mode.
