videos on emergency situations would be good to see. what do to when you see a bear, or threatening wild life, cleaning a cut on trail, how to stay warm in rainy conditions etc. have fun!
I don't want to be rude, but if you do not already know & fully understand the rules of bear safety, DO NOT GO BACKPACKING YET! A lot of backpacking videos avoid certain topics, because this is not a beginner activity, day hiking a developed path is. Before you spend a day or a night in the wild, as a car camper even, you must know your safety rules & techniques. Good news, lots of hiking RU-vidrs have created such content. I think the bulk of the backpacking community already knows those things, as you learn most safety protocols when you take up day hiking or as you grow up. I also have a feeling REI has legal concerns about posting bear safety techniques other than how to use bear spray, since unfortunately, most other safety maneuvers are hit or miss. Prevention (store all your smelly stuff - food or other products with any scent - SECURELY) is a strong message in her videos for a reason. Good luck to those of you just getting started - you've got a really beautiful life of adventure ahead!
Hey Miranda! I’d love to see you planning a trip from start to finish. Like planning the list of things you need, to purchasing the new gear, to planning the shuttle if needed, to seeking places to camp on a backpacking trail,to picking up passes, and just tips in general along the way, it’s all rather complicated! Lol
Watching this video after knowing that Nala has crossed the rainbow bridge is bittersweet. I really hope that Miranda soon finds a new hiking pal. In the meantime, I'm really enjoying seeing lil Nala bear hiking with her beloved human.
I also hike with my dog. He loves it. One thing I have learned while hiking with my dog is that his claws can poke holes in both the bottom of the tent and the inflatable sleeping pad. This can make for a long uncomfortable nights. My daughter came up with a great idea for preventing this from happening. She suggested I put booties on my dog every night before we go into the tent. I tried it and it work great! No more waking up cold and stiff on a flat mattress at 1:00 AM.
Because I’m a procrastinator when it comes to getting out of camp there are a couple of habits I stick to. Before I get out of the tent in the morning ( no matter how bad I have to pee) I pack up everything in the tent. Then I pack up the tent while I’m heating water for coffee. By the time I eat breakfast I’m 90% packed. It really helps me get out of camp quicker.
I have NEVER actually watched a Facebook ad, nor do I like camping/hiking, but once yours started playing I just found it so interesting and entertaining. So much so that I searched to see if you had your own channel. Now I look forward to watching more outdoorsy doings from the comfort of my favorite reading chair. 😊 I'll also be sharing this with my kids, all adults, who absolutely love the outdoors. Middle and his girlfriend son are currently camping and hiking in Yellowstone.
Great video. Being that I just started hiking last year, I’ve learned a lot from the REI channel and website. Please continue to provide more videos about backpacking, day hiking, and rock climbing/rappelling.
I have that exact same pillow, a pillow trick I read was to slip a t-shirt over the top of your air mattress, and put the pillow in there to keep it in place while you sleep, I haven't tried it yet but seems like a good tip.
That tick brought out Miranda's dark side! I get it though. I remember (at my first Boy Scout Jamboree many years ago) seeing tortoises around the lake that were badly infested with them. Some of the ticks were several inches across they were so bloated. YUCK. You keep fighting the good anti-tick fight, Miranda!!
Stehekin is amazing! I spent 6 months living there as a kayak guide in 2015 and it was the best experience! The community is incredible and you can't beat the recreation opportunities. Glad you had a great time!
I only hike in trail runners, take calf compression socks for the evenings at camp and that really helps! Also, a tennis ball or smooth stick for rolling the bottoms of your feet! I really liked this video, do more please!
I love watching your videos . Their is so much information in them and oddly enough they are relaxing to watch. Thank You for the enjoyment & knowledge.
I really enjoyed this vid. I liked seeing the products and your comments on them from the use of those products. Thanks for taking us on this trip. The views were amazing.
Thanks for hiking with Nala . Will check out that Ruff Wear dog sleeping bag...though I’m sure my Catahoula dog will get up after I have fallen asleep and attempt getting in the bag with me. Knowing how you punctured the filter bag will help me to avoid the same mistake.
Years ago when I was backpacking through western Europe I was just outside Barcelona hiking in the foothills of Mount Tibidabo, I was at the end of this path and I came to a clearing, there was a very secluded lake and there were tall trees all , the end
Oh my god, the finding the tick! Never in my life have I been more angry/panicked with my dog when I had already checked her for ticks after a day hike and later found one beneath her ear! Love this video, would love to see one on gear for dogs, recommendations and such :)
Thanks Miranda. Great content. As someone getting back into backpacking I like the way you create content that is informative, and easy to consume. Thanks for putting the effort into creating great content. More day in the life content please.
This brings back memories! My wife and I took the ferry to Stehekin in July of 2021. And spent two nights. I loved Rainbow Falls. I took a lot of photos.
Miranda, you’ve given me the confidence to go out at all. I’m an ADHD personality type, and I have very low confidence. Seeing someone silly and cheery like me just sort of fumbling through, not taking it too seriously, really comforts me. Thanks for all that you do!
I have the same sleeping bag and pillow and I can confirm the pillow pocket in the bag is a game changer. You could even just stuff it with a coat or anything. Having it stay in place all night is next level. Seeing the tick removal really took me back to when my family moved to a house with a yard that was infested with ticks. By the time we noticed them on our pup (two or three days, moving is hectic) I removed maybe 20 ticks in one sitting. It took a week before she would come to me when I called. 😔 We did tick treatments on her for a few months, now we just keep up with spraying the yard for ticks every so often. We fortunately haven’t had a recurrence since then. The only silver lining is I’m now a semi-pro at tick checks and removal.
Its great that REI would help produce something for beginner backpackers to watch to see what the experience is like. That being said, what kind of monster carries TWO, let alone one, Nalgene bottles?
The Nemo Disco is wonderful! I hate normal mummy bags because my legs always feel trapped but the disco made it so I slept so well and didn't feel claustrophobic in my bag.
... Awesome video,, love seeing the dogs that think it's only right that they get to wear a backpack too ...Beautiful location and overall scenery ,, good gear choices .. only thing I would have to add is evening fishing and an evening and/or morning swim ,, nothing more invigorating to get the day started .... on trail for the destinations activities ,, not chasing miles .... Agree , in the cooler times , dry sleep socks can make the night SO much better,, and if too cold ,, down booties over them ... Also on hard ground ,even with a good pad, putting your backpack under your knees , relieves lower back muscles for better body recoop.... Way overdue for an outing ,, but soon ....hopefully ..
Very cool!! Thanks Miranda and crew for showing us this very real, “in the wild” view of your backpacking trip!! Really liked to see your problem solving skills and tools! Cheers. More please!!
For ticks on dogs, my vet recommended doing double protection because I spend so much time outside. So he's on brevecto and a seresto collar. While I still find ticks on him on occasion they're dead and come off easily.
Loved the video! My wife and I use a Nemo Dagger 2P and LOVE it! I absolutely love the fact that it's not a tapered floor so you can't mess up the orientation of the rain fly. Also love ALL that headroom and huge vestibules. The ONLY gripe I have with it at all (compared to the Quarter Dome 2 we had before) is the air vents are on the vestibules so you have to unzip the door in order to open them, but the Quarter Dome made it so easy by having the vent at the top. It's a minor detail and overall it's an amazing tent.
You know, it would be cool to have a geologist travel with y’all (like me 😊) and explain the geologic history, you know, for science and fun 😊 we use a lot of your equipment to keep us safe and comfortable while we are mapping the wilderness.
Hi from Oz Miranda an Narla,I can only wish our trails had beautiful scenery as the States, from beautiful pines to snow, its amazing to watch. We also have beautiful but very different down under.Love watching you hike and your know how's.Happy trails.Buuuuuurp!
Bathrooms with flush toilets on trail.....pure luxury! Just completed 18 mile Wildcat Hollow trail at Wayne National Forest in Ohio. Overgrown with briars, literally over my head in some places. My Flash 55 backpack held up like a champ thru all the nasty sticker bushes clawing at me all day (maybe that’s why it’s named “Wildcat Hollow”?😼). No tears or snags anywhere! Love that pack💕💕
I can't wait for autumn. NJ isn't too hot in summer but it's too hot for me. The autumns here are perfect hiking weather. That's my plan, get the bulk of my work done this summer and coast through fall and hike a bunch
I don’t know if ticks can feel pain, but if they can, I hope the end was painful for that tick. I love Nala so much! 🥺 Your distress at her having the tick was palpable. She has such a good mommy. 💛
This is my favorite type of video. Thank you. I would love to see you do the bear bag (you probably already did one, but I haven't gotten to it yet). I would also like to see one of your wettest hikes. Rain and hiking intrigue me.
I use a yoga mat outside the door of my tent. It keeps junk out, gives me a clean place to put on shoes, and is helpful because I crawl out of my tent because of my mobility issues.
This was a treat. Nala looks so much like my dog Charlie! We're still in total lock down here in Ontario so I'm itching to get out and have some fun. Thank you for the video.
Your little walk through the woods reminds me when myself, my brother in law and nephew hiked 5 days up kings canyon. I’m an east coast boy and spent most of the trip with my mouth hanging open say wow over and over. I know they had a bad fire out there this year and hope the all the big ass trees survived because it was truly magical. Plus your black bears are WAY BIGGER than our puppy size blackies back east.
The dog carries it's own stuff! I love that! Right before you were putting on the dog backpack I was like...if only the dog could shoulder some of the load...and shazam, dog backpack! What a time to be alive.
Great video! Beautiful area. (I don't know if a lot of people are aware of this but you can get a Lyme disease vaccine for your dog. I get one for mine every year).
@@rei Hi Miranda, Have you tried tick hooks? they're easier to get the tick out as a whole instead of tweezers which can sometimes leave legs and pincers behind while also injecting poison into a pet. I swear by tick hooks for all my dogs and cats. They also seem less painful for the pet. My cat barely notices anymore. :-) But each to their own maybe you have tried them and they don't work for you. Happy Hiking love the content.
A very engaging and personal backpacking video. Well done! Question: Who makes or where did you get that handy little ziplock pouch in which you made your hot breakfast at the 1:20 mark. I was thinking of using brand name bags from the supermarket, but they don't seem to seal securely. Yours looks pretty solid.
Hi Gary! It's a Stasher Bag. You can find them at REI! They are definitely worth the investment and can be used for all sorts of applications in backpacking and camping. Check them out here: www.rei.com/b/stasher/c/all - Miranda
I went to REI for maybe the second time ever, and asked where Miranda was….NO ONE there watches. I talked to no less than 7 employees LOL…. All said man I loved it, every employee was so knowledgeable and friendly !
