I agree with your criticism about bands/artists holding on to songs. One thing we are considering doing is burning songs to a cd and hand the cd to people who follow us on social media.

The BatCrow Farm Band I feel like it’s also important to not let the fast past of today’s music landscape force our hands too quick. Sometimes a song/project could benefit from aging. “Hey Ya” by Outkast was said to be recorded in 1998-99. It dropped in ‘03. That song would of hit different had it dropped right when they first fleshed it out. Just some food for thought. I’m still learning too: open.spotify.com/artist/6r9gZeBSEYduP33cyKRzOC?si=ym3jWxu9RV6ffrLbvMTd_g

bryson the alien stankonia is about 73 minutes long and had three singles. OutKast wasn’t feeling any pressure to put out everything they had. Led Zeppelin sometimes put leftover songs on the next album. There’s no rule saying you can’t release the song later. Some artists put out multiple versions of the same song(studio version, live version, acoustic version)

@@televisionskies I'm from London in the UK but currently at uni in a different town just outside London. And nope, not really a musician myself, mainly just a lover of great music! :)) I've subscribed to your channel now, you're making awesome stuff, I think you are seriously talented (also, the effort you put into everything you make doesn't go unnoticed, from the music itself and the various videos you put out). The song Damian used in this video, in particular, is great. It transitions incredibly through the verse into the chorus, sounds amazing. (what's this song called btw, I wanna listen to the full thing) Keep it up you two

I'm soooooo stoked for this!! I relate to James' conundrum in a big way, being sort of a compulsive songwriter and multi instrumentalist (obviously I don't have that honey voice though). So I'm takin notes on that journey, verbatim.

I was a band manger for 10 years - just randomly, no experience in that industry at all, but just met a band and they asked me to be their manager and I said I'd give it a go. I didn't follow any rules, and that was a good thing as it was a special time in the music world, everything had just fallen apart and the major labels had temporarily lost all control and there really wasn't any rules to follow right then. I guess every band brings it's own unique set of challenges and considerations: I had a great band to work with, but they had 4 guys in the band that were natural stars, never had to worry about them being 'interesting' and they could write a new song everyday almost. It was completely chaotic and I managed by myself in the end I just got tired of chasing my tail and I tried to push the guys to 'sell out' and do things a bit more normally, but they just aren't normal people. To be honest I couldn't wait to get out the industry, I think SXSW 2017 was the last straw for me - out of all those bands and artists there were about 5% actual bands with instruments and the rest was hip hop based stuff I just didn't get. I realised the whole music world have changed into something I no longer recognised and no longer felt any passion for and there was a new structure that had gradually formed and now seems like the big players have regained control. There was a brief amazing moment back around 2009 - when you could directly book a 1500 cap venue in big European city and sell it out just using social media (when facebook gave you 100% access to your followers) and keep all the profit - it was a great time to be in the business. Many great memories of touring around then. Different world.

Wow that mood board thing was really interesting. I've done mood boards for specific branding elements like my band did one recently to send to a logo designer which we just filled up with aesthetic ideas that we felt represented us. I never really thought of doing one that straight up encompasses our whole journey and what we stand for. That makes so much sense in terms of inspiring us when we're creating content.

Great to see a mood board! I would take it even further... after doing the mood board of their influences and stuff, do a developed one that includes THEIR colours, fonts, chosen aesthetics that are solely theirs but have been inspired by the influences 😊 Defining this stuff makes photo shoots etc much easier. Great to see some focus on the visuals though 😁

Do less better - great advice man. Kind of feel like we're going in all directions at once sometimes with building a RU-vid Channel, writing new stuff, recording what've already got, making videos for our stuff... it's definitely key to keep in mind. Hey Damian, I’ve learned so much from your content over literally the past 3 weeks. I stumbled onto you, Garyvee & actually from the Reyes the entrepreneur 😆.. a quick sum up-I am a drummer, guitarist, bassist & keys definitely 4th..I don’t dabble in ANY of those areas..Writing to me is like breathing..I don’t mean for that to sound any other way than the truth..for the past 18 months myself & my songwriting partner have been a plane ride away from 3 ‘layup’ meeting in Nashville. It’s been almost too good to be true, but none the less it is true. My partner is the worlds #1 Elvis tribute who initially had the meetings for himself. My role was to supple him with material that he could go with to help dictate the terms of the meeting a little more & help him not to get B & C songs..quickly the goal became to develop a sound that was not of the current country mold..and also for me to help him find ‘his’ voice. Mission accomplished. Over the past year I developed a very solid relationship with our guys in Nashville while my partners touring schedule kept interfering with the meeting dates. I have seen my partners interest in the game plan declining & I was filled with a lot of uncertainty..so, I started taking action, took your advice & began working on social with not much of a clue as to what I was doing & simultaneously starting a company where my goal is to become a brand that no matter what the industry is doing, fans can always count on..while this message may be a BIT too long, I know & have learned from you to reach out in comments so I’m doing it on the fly. I have so much material, only a fraction laid down, with very rough vocals but the feel & sound is there. I haven’t wanted to post any music yet until I get back in the studio & can arrange clips..My goal now is to attain my own representation & grow my company naturally and no longer be dependent on someone else-it’s been a reoccurring theme for years & would be pointless if I didn’t learn from it. Which I did, and am grateful for it. To wrap up, I just want to say thank you for being a coach along the way, for your content that allows for so much strategy & execution & if by chance you don’t skip this thesis, thank you for taking the time to read. I wish you nothing but the best! Thanks, Chris Harding

Nice one, Damo! I was slightly concerned where you were going with this series as the first two episodes were too X Factor for me. I was going to comment as much at the time, then it occurred to me that you had to set it up somehow, and I didn't have much to contribute in the way of doing it any better! And plenty of others enjoyed it so I butted out 😁. Great to see you back on your usual territory here though, with some great ideas on organisation and strategy which is what I come to you for (and thanks again for all the top advice I've taken so far). I reckon that change of format is a great idea and look forward to the next episodes. Cheers! Jonty K

The mood board is a great idea! Definitely something I plan to do. But the "showing the songwriting process" part kinda terrifies me lol. Not just for the fact people may not like it, but you may change things for a later release and have people go "Meh, I liked the first version better."

Hey Damo, your advice on putting new songs on YT is interesting. My problem is that my production skills are rubbish, so I'm hesitant to put full songs up before they've been properly produced. I could probably get away with posting the first half (ish) of a new song, then post the full thing later when it's produced, I suppose. Any thoughts?
