I caught up with Can't Swim's tour manager, Charlie Caruso, to chat about what his job entails.
A huge shoutout to Charlie for being so cool about being interviewed while actually working haha :)
I left this as sort of a longer piece with hopes that people who are interested in pursuing tour managing could digest all the information.
Enjoy!

This is honestly so wonderful. It's hard to find specific video content like this, especially on the topic. 10/10

Man, i have huge respect for these bands that are not big enough to live off of it good yet not small enough to do it as a sidejob. it's the perfect spot where you don't want to be from a purely reasonable POV but they love it so they do it anyway and without them, there would be much less shows, in all genres. personally, i sometimes play small to medium clubs as opener and sometimes even smaller stuff as headliner gig but that's all local stuff within a few hours of my home so it gives me just enough air to smell how it's working and to feel like i'm a small part of it but man, i never would want to do this full time, it's not for me. this is hard fucking work and dont ever make the mistake to compare your wage vs the time you put in.

I finally reached the point I can hire a full time merch/tm guy and I’m going to show him this video as mandatory training. Absolutely incredible insight man…thank you!

Really enjoyed this. Have not heard of either band before, but just listened to them on YT. Both have a great sound. Will be catching the show nest time in ATL so please include in ‘24.

This documentary was so inspiring for me when I first watched it a couple of years ago, since then I’ve started doing merch for a band which had given me the most amazing experiences and I hope to continue to do so and it’s all because of this video, thank you so much for making it🙏

This was super interesting thank you for making this! Ive always been interested in tour managing// being a video/photographer for a band on tour. Great video and great insight for fans out there. It shows a realistic view of how a Indie business model works. It’s not always s&$@s and giggles out there as well. I retired from the road 6 years ago, this brought back a lot of memories. Wouldn’t change a thing.🎧

Its amazing , just watched a video on a DJ making edm/dubstep - from my country flying worldwide living big hotels and 1 class air flights .. he’s in mid 20 making millions while hard working rock musicians almost can’t effort going on tour .. why isn’t there the same audience for all musicians ! Deeply respect and love to these struggling acts - hope huge success will land on your shoulders ❤️🔥🎤🎸

Thats called paying your dues , if you stick with it and become very good the big $ are there waiting. But you have to be smart , not too greedy and be able to take ALOT of BS and sort thru it all in the beginning. If you are truly cut out fot this biz, you will get there.

Lots of bands are lucky to break even on tours, let alone profit. Merch sales help them a lot, but no one ever works on a tour just for the money.

Interesting video! How did you become a tour manager and what kinda person should you be if you wanted to become a tour manager?
@westrig180
@westrig180 7 месяцев назад
There is no 'one answer' to your question. Often its right place, right time. Maybe fate. Someone who understands all types of people, has patience but also knows when to draw the line and deal with whatever situ needs resolving immediately. You grow into the position. One cant set themselves up to be in management. Its acquired thru years of experience doing other touring positions first. You have to know all the aspects of production in order to understand and control a load in show and load out. You dont learn that in a day or week or two months. Most of the 'instant tour manager' people that got into it cause they were friends with the band etc dont last very long.

@@westrig180 Interesting insights! I heard that you can actually go to uni in Germany to become a tour manager... Sounds like that wouldn't make much sense from what you've said...

Hey, curious what did you use for mics for this video? Lav? Shotgun? Combo?
@AndrewKamenMusic
@AndrewKamenMusic 11 месяцев назад
i was using a sony k3m on my a7sii at the time. it had a little shotgun going into one channel for the location sound and then a sennheiser g3 lav on charlie. g3 receiver went into the 2nd channel on the k3m.
