General cardiology fellowships in the US are 3 additional years of training after first completing a 3 year internal medicine residency and 4 years of medical school. I describe how cardiology fellowships are structured, what a typical call shift is like, and a what a day to day schedule is like. Comment below if you want to learn more about specific aspects of cardiology fellowships!

Hi Dr. Katz, you're incredibly busy so I'll get to the point. I'm an MS3 and I love Cards, but also like Anesthesia (a bit less so). I also would love to have kids and be an active father, and I'm afraid going into Cards won't allow me to see them as often as I could by going into something less demanding. Could you offer any insight as to the lifestyle AFTER residency? residency sucks everywhere so no expectations there, but I don't want to go in for STEMIs or emergency echos at night 3 times a week and would love to be able to plan vacations with my family. Thanks a bunch, and best of luck to you!

Great video Man! Always fascinating to learn about cardiology!!! I had a CT Angiogram 2 years ago to check for aneurysms, since I had one as a little kid from Kawasaki disease. So it is cool for me to learn about something that I’ve dealt with before!!

Hey! Thanks for making this video. Gonna start internal medicine residency this summer and just read your comment about interventional. In that same vein - and outside of being a fellow - do you feel like general cardiology or those doing advanced imaging can have a decent lifestyle?

I’m a Junior in college and I’m currently majoring in bioinformatics and pre-med. I really enjoy physics and math. Would you say these topics are apart of a cardiologist’s everyday life?
@MarcKatzMD
@MarcKatzMD 2 года назад
100%. I was a physics TA in college and part of what drew me to cardiology was the physics of it all. Don’t get me wrong- you have to still get through 3 years of internal medicine and it’s not a guarantee that you match into a cardiology fellowship. But I use physics every single day of my work life. Here’s a TikTok video I made on this exact topic that I posted to my shorts today for yah: ru-vid.comlKgI13Fnktk?feature=share Lmk if any follow up questions I can help answer!

@@MarcKatzMD What types of procedures do interventional cardiologists do? Also if I'm not necessarily interested in surgery, is it possible to be interested in interventional cardiology (or is it a lot like surgery?)? Thanks Doctor Katz!
@MarcKatzMD
@MarcKatzMD 3 года назад
@@DrumBoy728 hey man! I did make a video about how to match into a cardiology fellowship- check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x_nsg5q44-8.html. As for interventional cardiology- it’s all about what you want in your career in medicine. Interventional cardiology is absolutely fun and challenging. It’s like surgery in that there are a lot of procedures but very different training. For interventional cardiology you start as an internist then get general cardiology training. So you’re trained completely differently compared to a surgeon who does a 5 year residency in general surgery and can then pursue other subspecialties or areas of surgery. You also have to weigh the lifestyle- it certainly pays well. In fact, almost the most of all internal medicine subspecialties. But it’s another year of training and you truly have to be passionate about it to want to be the person woken up in the middle of the night for heart attacks and procedures. It’s all about what you enjoy and balancing the benefits of each aspect of different specialties

Hello, I am a current freshman in high school taking both college and high school classes, and in one of the college classes I was taking, a major assignment was to research universities and things like that, and I came across the Caribbean. I saw a lot of 5 years pre-med/MD programs right out of high school and they accept college credit. I want to become a cardiologist just like you and I am wondering, is going to the Caribbean for a 5-year pre-med/MD program good or bad for cardiology? Will it put me at a disadvantage? Also, does it matter where you go for medical school and residency for a cardiology fellowship?
@MarcKatzMD
@MarcKatzMD Год назад
Caribbean schools out you wt a disadvantage. Period. You need to focus on getting into a good American medical school to get into a good internal medicine residency program to then get into fellowship. Need to walk before you run! Check out my other videos about my residency and how to match into cardiology

Hey Marc, current software engineer at FAANG here making about $300k a year in HCOL. I’ve always found cardiology interesting and considering Interventional Cards. I’m 33 and so I’d imagine total time to complete is around 10-12 years. With about $700-800k salary for an Interventional Cardiologist, I’d still end up on top by end of career. Would you say it’s a good move?

Hi :) I'm board certified physician in Korea and going to cards fellowship program next year hoping to become a interventional cardiologist. Do u have any books or educational materials to recommend for beginners? (Sure, I'm gonna watch all of your videos about heart diseases, great explanations about funtional test modalities) Thanks :)
@MarcKatzMD

Good luck! South Korea has some amazing hospitals. During my residency training the cardiology department would teleconference with Sejong Hospital on a monthly basis to discuss their respective ongoing research and interventional experiences. What I enjoyed the most were review articles on topics from the American College of Cardiology, Braunwald’s cardiology textbook, and O’Keefe online resource for ECG’s, and the Mayo board review coarse is great as well for boards studying and also as a primer on all things cardiology. At times I was overwhelmed with how much information there is to learn but the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.

@@MarcKatzMD Wow!! thanks for your great explanations and recommendations :) I'm also glad that you enjoyed conferencing with Sejong hospital, the one and only specialized heart center in South Korea except for tertiary hospital. As you said, I'll try to take it one by one. Thank you very much - hoping to see u someday in the international conference :)
