This is just one kind of day a drum major may face at our school but hope y'all enjoy! And lock your lockers :) socials- Instagram: alwaysvalerierae / alwaysvalerierae You used to lock your lockers but now you don't, what happened? :(
Uh well actually if you only had 7 minutes and 49 seconds in your day than you would be 70 in only 154 days, and that’s only one marching season, as someone who’s simultaneously trying to learn how to play there instrument and walk, therefore I believe you should rethink your decision, thank you for attending my TED talk.
Those are some good sounding clarinet players. I'm a section leader of 19 clarinets and about three of them are actually audible at any given time. I'm not sure the others even know their parts, despite the multiple tests and sectionals...
Thank you! And I'm sorry to hear that, your efforts are not to waste though, there are many factors that go into having good sounding players (teaching, environment, the player's determination/focus/willpower) so don't feel too down about your section! I'm sure you're a wonderful section leader so don't be too hard on yourself!
Schools have some complete control where bands can practice...When I was in, back in 1973-76, we had our own 50- yard patch of ground in front of the school...same with my daughter ,1998-2002...Now, with school expanding, the current band uses the student parking lot before and after school and uses the football field for final polishing of the field shows...it is really hard for some bands to find enough space to practice marching....
Klein Baird rob Kelly woah how do you know lol I know 4 band directors and they all drive fords lol that like 10 band directors since I live in Texas Brownsville and you probably don’t live where I live
oh my god your band facilities are beautifulI'm so glad that there are schools where arts get more funding!! It makes me so happy to see ~~ you seem like a great DM, too! You were really positive the entire time, which is so great!! Do you have any tips for learning to conduct?
Wow, thank you so much! Our district supports the fine arts greatly and we really try our best to take care of the facilities given to us. I'm glad it makes you happy, it makes me happy that you're happy! (lmao) Again, thank you for the compliment! Learning how to conduct is best learned from previous drum majors or your band directors! One on one action is the best and I recommend that over watching conducting videos since everyone has different areas they need to work on. A few general tips for conducting would be to always practice in front of a mirror and mark where your hands should be hitting. I know for different schools there are different styles and preferences so always keep that in mind as your practicing! I always liked to keep a sharp defined ictus and motion of my arms, 4/4 being a distinct arrow, 3/4 similar to a check, etc because it's easier to follow for the band. (again, this is just our band's/my personal preference) I wish you the best of luck in learning how to conduct and feel free to ask more questions if you have any!
@@alwaysvalerierae This is so helpful! I'm trying out next Monday (from home via recording lol), but there's so much to it. I'm still marking the master scores of all 3 movements.
What do you expect...Carmel, Calfornia...the place reeks $$$$$$.....The school district probably has a very health budget AND some real generous band donors....bless them,,,
Holy Hell your band place thing is huge! I don't think I can call it a room if it has hallways! At my school we have one small room designated to the band, just wow, much beautiful
Oh wow, yeah, I am really grateful for the facility we had! Our school has over 4,000 kids so you can imagine the size of the school itself. I'm sure your band room is a very comfortable/home-y place! (unless you have to cram a whole bunch of sweaty bodies in it)
TheSoupIsGone yeah my band room is smol 2. We have a “hallway” with the band room, choir room, and a teacher planning and 2 other classrooms. But it’s called the band hallway because no one else goes into that hallway. My band is actually crazy and no one likes going in there. To us it’s home, to them it’s like a mental asylum 😂. Kids are scared to go down there apparently lmao. They ask me how I do it. I’m like, boi band kids are the best. It’s like having 50+ new family members (not for my school, but for the other schools in my area). Yeah, some of us it’s a love-hate relationship, but you can talk to anyone in there.
@@DragonLover-hb7pz for real tho, i have a band hall, with the offices and practice rooms, and the neading to the auditorium are all of our lockers. i have never seen that hallway with no band kid.
we just have a hallway by are auditorium that is just all encompassing of our performing arts, it's where the choir room, both band rooms, dressing room, and practice rooms are that hallway is where you spend most of your time if your a fine arts kid
During practices/performances watch the section leader of the battery/ head snare drum players feet, if you can't see their feet, I recommend watching their hands. It's important to establish a secure relationship between you and them for you both keep time for the band and you guys should watch each other so there is never a tear. On your down time, I recommend practicing with this website to ensure your abilities to keep time: bestdrumtrainer.com/tt/ Sometimes you have to always believe/think you're right because your ears will always deceive you! Best of luck and I hope this helps a bit!
it's honestly interesting to see how schools and bands are so different from one another. Also, any tips on how to become a drum major with crippling anxiety/social anxiety?
Fire Blaze It’s really hard to be a drum major under those circumstances since you have to interact with the whole band but it’s definitely not impossible. Start by getting your body and mind used to interaction with groups of people and slowly try to increase it. Befriend or meet a lot of people in your band, you can do this one on one. There are definitely aspects of being a drum major that is behind the scenes! Let your director(s) know, if you’re comfortable with that, and let them know that you won’t let it hinder your audition! Have faith! I believe in you! Good luck :)
ValerieRae1960 thanks man I’m really trying to get drum major for next year but as a tuba and a dude(my band director prefers girls) I’m trying everthing to get a lead/advantage so I’m always looking out for tips like thesw
Some schools, depending on the administration support ,totallly blow the band program off and focus on the football /basketball teams...all about the money....Band is EXPENSIVE...many bands have yearly band fees up to $500 / student, and that is NOT counting extra fund raising....uniforms, instrument repair, music, marching instructors for drum and flag lines do not come cheap...the yearly competition show program is a small fortune...material for the flags , the list goes on and on...even small bands, up to 80 kids, can cost about $50,000 per marching season...and that's bare-bones budget...I have been a volunteer for over 20 years..I have fees go from $50 /year...my days....to $500 /year NOW...school districts in my area allow only $2,000 /band a year for budget ...yep....that's it in my area of the State....Back in the day bands were about 120 kids.....now you are LUCKY to get one with 65 -80...on a good day....Bless our music directors !!!
I'm in a small town high school and we have 16 people in our band. we don't have a drum major but my band director has been hinting it slightly towards me because our band is kinda getting bigger.
Definitely try and do it, especially since he may be hinting at it! No matter how small a band, there is always a need for a leader, whether it is a drum major or not. It is a wonderful experience!!
At least your football coaches are nice to let you guys use the stadium. Our director has to fight every year just so we can have one or two days in the stadium. We have to practice on a blacktop every other day.
And our football coach does not let us step foot on the field unless we are performing our show or doing the national anthem. We march in a parking lot 99% of the time. Our practice is right after school so we just have to pray that all the cars are leaving but if not we just march over cars. If it rains we have to stack chairs in the auditorium and lay down masking tape for yard lines.
We are very blessed to have a nice understanding coach. Our rehearsals are usually in a parking lot that we call the grid. When it rains, we stop learning drill and go inside and just focus on music until we can go back outside!
I was watching and I saw the stadium and was like I KNOW THAT STADIUM! That’s so cool that I happen to know your band. Your band is really good! Always excited when our football teams play so I can hear y’all!
Thank you!!! :) I do wish that I did a few more of these to show different days (since we do different things on different days but for the most part, it's the same) before I graduated high school but oh well :')
The Samson brothers remind me of my drum major and his brother. Once, on of the parents asked for help and they both went and when they did, they walked the exact same, in step and everything.
This is a good video. Our drum majors are our directors favorite. It's sad that you guys have to stay late to clean and stuff. When we have to clean, our whole band stays late and each section gets assigned different areas.
Football coach seems nice. The coaches at my school, on the other hand, kicked us off of the field when we were supposed to be rehearsing outside for the first time in three weeks, the morning of our first competition.
Literally watching this because I'm nervous to auddition for Drum Major thats literally starts 6 hours. I really need to be asleep and prepare but I just cant relax..
Listen y’all…. You don’t just decide to become drum major your junior year. If you haven’t established your ability to be on time, be dedicated to perfection including being a straight A student, able to interact with the entire marching band…. Including your flags and dancers….. fogeddabouuudid. And don’t forget: To be early is to be on time To be on time is to be late To be late is to be left!
This one day at Band Camp... -TBH, I was one of the drumline types. Played BD in the high school, moved on to college and swapped out for SD... all those years, and no regrets. I just wish my school hadn't gotten rid of their band this year-
This was so cute😊 And y'all are really good. How much do drum majors really get to play with the band? It will be my first year in August (I'll be in 8th grade. SO excited!) One of my friends is our section leader, and he will be drum major this year. He will be a junior, I know he's really excited about it, I just hope it doesn't take that much time away from the section
first last drum majors rarely get time to play their instrument during summer band. When school starts, it depends on how your program may do it but they might half it where half the class you are outside working on drill and then the other half you are inside working on region music. It all depends though! Especially if the drum major has a solo in the program as well!
ValerieRae1960 Last year, the drum major played clarinet and she had a solo, but since he plays baritone and trombone, I doubt he will. I hope he still gets to play with us (I kinda have this HUGE crush on him) but whatever happens, this is going to be a great season!
I submitted my drum major audition on Saturday lol, our band is around 30 people with 2 drum majors and only one spot is open so I don’t have high hopes
I do street marching band and next year I am going to high school and I don't know if I am going to do field show though I have one question is it hard???
Your band hall is like a mansion compared to mine. We have the main part where we play. We have the band directors office, instrument room and uniform room which at all relatively the same size.(like a bedroom size) then we have the loading crew room full of water and some percussion things. Then we have the majorette room and color guard room which are all so small you wouldn’t beileive it. My closet is bigger...
We don't clean our band room every day, but we also only have 126 people. It's a ton of responsibility, but I love being head drum major, auditioning was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Our band then was about 280 people and one of the main reasons we cleaned up everyday we didn't want to leave the place all trashed up for our custodians to clean and also, it's our home, you don't want to leave your home messy, ya know? But I get ya, being a drum major/head drum major is a truly tough job both mentally and physically, but I always lived for the small tokens of happiness, appreciation, and all of the fun experiences. Lmao sorry for this long af reply, but yeah :)
Yea our bandies are typically pretty good at cleaning up, except on game days, that's when we normally stay late to clean up (no fun, haha). I get what you mean about the small things, I love helping out with stuff so I volunteer for as many things as I can for the band like hosting bands at our home competition and stuff like this. Band is like the best thing ever.
Awww your band members sound amazing!!!! :'D I also loved volunteering for our band competitions (a lot of them are held at our stadium) Band is truly wonderful! I hope you continue it in college if possible (currently I am in the Longhorn Band at the University of Texas at Austin)
The high School Marching band I was for all four years of high school is quite well known actually.......... We are called the New Philadelphia High School Marching Quaker Band an we've been competition band since the 1970s an we were established in the year 1915 so we one of the oldest bands from Ohio............ an for many years we were the only band from Ohio to go to Grand Nationals an BOAs we are Class AA an at state we are a Class A band........... But we know how to put on a show tho let me tell ya an Im alumni from class of 2014..... I encourage you to watch all our old n new competition vids from the 70s till now an we one of the bands in Ohio we all sliver horn line
My school got rid of Drum majors Since the 80s and I don't know why. Also the band I'm in used to have 100 members we were called the "Marching 100" but after 2013 when the new school got built we dropped to 80 and now that we have a new band director we have 38. The new band room is small.
my band doesn't have lockers we have rooms lol so we have a jazz room, woodwind room, brass room, drumline room and mariachi room with cubbies to put stuff in
