Love this!! I'm wanting to be a math teacher as well!! Finishing up my undergraduate and then going to start a career changer program that our state offers (a training then one year of shadowing an existing teacher). It was working with middle school students in the Americorp program called City Year that sold me on the career. So looking forward to it!! Always so nice to see videos like this and yours was really descriptive!!
I just found this channel! I’m going to be a middle school teacher one day and I wanted to learn about the struggles and benefits:) I haven’t looked at your channel yet( I’m about too) but could you make some videos like that?
HeatherGrace201 Hi and thank you for checking out my channel! Yes; I will think about that topic! I taught 1st and 2nd grade in the first part of my career so that would be interesting.
Hi. I am new to your channel. I liked your video, and I plan on watching more of your content. I go to a regional S.T.E.M university where the math students are like rock stars in our own little world. There is no secondary math teaching degree at my university. If i teach, I would be hesitant to dumb down my expectations for performance. One of my fears about becoming a math teacher is that I would get in trouble for giving homework that calls for "too much" deep understanding. Should I be thinking about lowering the bar, or should I keep my ideals ? I liked your video because it seemed like you included everything that goes on in your day from dawn to dusk. Good work.
Andre GODFREY Thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel! I bet you are a rock star at your university. I absolutely LOVE teaching middle school math. The practice we give for home is not rote or simply procedural practice. If I had my wish, I wouldn’t give any homework or only occasionally. I would say keep your ideals but when it comes to homework, I don’t believe it helps students progress that much, especially with a problem based resource. We do deep thinking in the classroom every day.
How old are the children you teach? I'm currently trying to decide between being a middle or high school STEM teacher. I really would like to do science, but my state (Arkansas) requires us to be certified in two areas if you are a middle school teacher (in which case I'd like to do either science and math or science and social studies.) If I become a high school teacher, I get to have a more specialized area, which means I get to learn more (I'd likely choose biology or physics). I love so many different subjects it's hard to choose.
Michael Anglin Wow, you have a lot of choices ahead! I teach 6th grade math. I love this age group. I have an elementary degree K-9 and am endorsed in math, social studies and language arts.
@@themathreflective Too many choices, it feels like! I just know that everything about life and the world is fascinating to me, and to share that fascination and wonder with others is the absolute best thing I can think of to do with my time! "Curiousity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back" accurately describes my outlook on life. I don't think there is a single thing that runs through my brain that I'm not passionate about, so definitely no problem there!
I like to get my board ready for the next day before I leave each afternoon. I drive about 30 minutes to school and I would hate to come in late with nothing posted. I usually arrive early but then I can use that time to make copies and quickly go through the outline of my lesson for the day.
Facts World Hello! Thank you so much for watching my channel! My contract teaching day is 7:15-2:50. I teach 5 periods that are 40 min each and a 30 minute homeroom. We have team meetings 4 times a week and 30 minute lunches.
Hi from California! I'm thinking of going into teaching and have a few questions: 1) Did you have to obtain a single subject or multi subject teaching credential for 6th grade math? 2) The 6th grade teachers at my middle school taught 2 subjects (math/science or english/history). Do you teach 2 subject too or just math? Thank you!
Zeina Naim thanks for watching! I obtained my first license in Michigan a long time ago. After 12 years as a stay at home mom, I had to get certification in Illinois. I have a k-9 elementary degree but also had to have endorsements to teach middle school: the middle school endorsement, a math endorsement, a language arts endorsement and a social studies one. Not required to get all but the more subjects you are endorsed in, the more marketable you are. Check the guidelines in your state to be certain.
Hi Sarah! I started out teaching first grade for many years before I transitioned to middle school. Certification has changed so much and varies by state. Not sure I can advise you properly!
