I'm horrified i don't want to go to middle school..Literally i feel butterflies in my stomach thinking about it.. Nobody in my school is going to the same middle school as me :(
SmartieStyle I’m starting middle school in like a week. Since of Covid I have to do virtual classes. All I think about is Middle School. I would like if you give me advice.
Don't be nervous about any silence, I promise, they're just nervous. I'm a middle schooler myself, and that's how it was the first few days. We're just nervous about being judged, because there are new people. You seem like an amazing teacher too. Keep up the good work, and congrats on gaining this opportunity! :D
I'm horrified to go to middle school this year, Horrified..I will have no friends and everyone will be a complete stranger..Since i'm going to a school near my house in yorktown since i moved 3 years ago but i stayed in a Newport news school still..I'm feeling more nervous as the days get closer
Haruka Vakery From experience, I promise you’ll be okay. You’re not alone and you’ll get any help you need. You’ll he used to finding everything super quick and your teachers will be very understanding, so don’t worry too much! :)
Yay, you're back! I've been getting my "SmartieStyle " fix by binge watching previous vlogs. Love the title referenced to "Monie in the Middle" throwback 90s' rap song. lol (Telling my age). Godspeed and continued success with all of your endeavors!
I don't know what's more impressive, your desire to stick to a workout routine (waking up at 4 am? YIKES), or your ability to confront the challenges middle school brings with a bright attitude? Whatever the answer, kudos to you for continuing to produce high-quality content despite the serial pressures of your job.
Are you still enjoying middle school or do you miss elementary? Your classroom still looks amazing and is very welcoming. I'm not looking forward to Monday. I am not ready to return.
Oh my word! I had to stop the video for just a second and say how much I loved your "what students want" board! What a great idea! Ok - back to the video :)
I’m excited for you. You have an air about you like you would have no problem commanding a room. I don’t teach language arts but I enjoyed hearing your techniques
"I need this feeling to go away as soon as possible..." Girl! I am there, too! I haven't made any major changes this year, but our whole school adopted a new web-based system for all our class webpages, gradebooks, etc...and MAN, do I feel like I am CONSTANTLY behind!
So glad you had a good first week! I have bee. I have the same problem with my students not wanting to discuss with others. Also, I love that investigate the teacher sheet. Great idea!
I feel like there is way more critical thinking in schools now, good prep for college i think. I can remember feeling a little unprepared for college. Not these kids the transition should be easier. Your organization and dedication is just amazing. Hats off to you. enjoying your vlogs. Im sure you'll enjoy middle school. Love the posters.
Happy School Year!!! You seem to have found your niche with middle schoolers. I just finished my first week of teaching and am now recovering and catching up during a DESPERATELY NEEDED "Reset" weekend. I hope you get the same!
I totally understand your feeling. This is my 12th year teaching but my first time teaching middle school (7th grade Reading). It is definitely a process trying to learn all the newness and how things work on this level. We started last Monday on the 19th. I can’t wait until I can get a routine down.
Love your Monday, August 13th outfit!! The yellow cardigan will the top under it was stunning! Could you link where you got them please? Thank you. Alicia from CT.
Thanks! The jumpsuit underneath the cardigan is from Ann Taylor Loft and the cardigan is from Old Navy. I checked, but neither one of the items are on the websites.
I found your channel and absolutely love it and am so interested in differences you see from elementary to middle school! I'm getting my bachelors currently in elementary education and am super interested in teaching both elementary and then eventually middle school grades...would love to see a video for the differences and how you are liking it if you haven't already !
Would you ever do crochet braids? I've seen people wear them who also workout often. I'm glad you're enjoying middle school so far! I start teaching middle school (180ish sixth graders for trimester 1) next week. My commutes will be tough, but I'm excited to meet the rest of my teams this week and get things going for the school year!
I've heard of crochet braids, the only thing that makes me pause is for some it looks like there's a ton of braids on their heads. I don't get my hair braided to often, but I think I'll stick to traditional braids when I do. I hope meeting your new teams went well!
I definitely feel that middle school is your niche and because you are so organized, things will probably smooth out in a couple of weeks. Leadership does sound like a big responsibility and a lot of work but I know that you're the perfect person for the job but just be sure to get your rest!
Thank you! Middle school feels so right for me. Although it is a big responsibility, I am enjoying working with the leadership kids. It is something I have always been interested in.
Oh yes! I discovered that real quick and if nothing else it make me happier to look at it. You can make folders inside of folders. I love my Google Drive, now that it's organized.
Hi, I'm a homeschool mom. I came across your video about First year teachers being extinct. I knew exactly what you meant. Then you said you were in your first year in middle school. My oldest is in 7th grade now and I think your vlog will be helpful to me in keeping her thinking like other middle schoolers.
Tomorrow is officially my first day starting as a middle ELA teacher. I’m excited but extremely nervous. I am first time year teacher. Love the video very helpful, any advice?
I don't think there are written directions anywhere. This was a structure that the trainer just verbally described. That is why I had to e-mail him for clarification. Basically, a group works on a presentation piece, making sure everyone knows what is to be presented because the will all present. When it is time to present all the seat 1s, 2s. 3s. and 4s travel to every table group in a clockwise rotation. When a student arrives at their table group with their traveling group, they present their groups materials. The other students listen, and give feedback, constructive criticism, or ask any question they may have.
Yay! Tomorrow’s my first day of school! I am going to be taking a break from CMS and come back to CMS in 3-4 years as a new CMS Teacher teaching 3rd Grade in the future! ❤️Aaron
I just graduated this spring and I will be a middle school teacher in the fall. Any advice for a new teacher like me? I have been reading "the first day of school" by Harry Wong, and I am nervous yet excited to work with middle schoolers
Hello and congrats! I think that book is a little outdated in ways. I would suggest reading Better Than Carrots or Sticks to help with building classroom community.
Are you providing your mid schoolers with discussion prompts? They might need a little push to get started. Also I think there is a video you can show from the Teaching Channel that models having collaborative discussions.
Welcome to middle school! You’re schedule is similar to mine, in which I have an hour and a half planning first thing in the morning on odd days. Best of luck... it can be done! I’m 11 years in. I admire your Starbucks run. We start at 7:15 😬.
I am happy to be a part of the middle school world! Loving the prep period and the fast pace of it. I need to get my Starbucks run under control. I just loving having that treat in the morning.
