Hi Victoria, I have been watching your videos for 2 days now, listening to various stories and information about the coding journey. I am overly impressed with you and your workload and dedication. I am starting an excelerated, 12-week medical coding class that I am terrified to take on now. I was very excited and eager to take this on but I keep hearing SO MUCH about how this is not a piece of cake, its a lot of work, there is lots of reading, you have to be ready for these multiple thick books etc. And I don't hear much that excites me about the job. - Don't get me wrong, I'm no stranger to hard work and dedication.... I worked 2 jobs and school all at once with no core reason to do so other than just wanting more for myself. I would be the first one to my job and last one to leave each day, due to my dedication and hard work. But this feels different. ------- After I had my first and only child, **happy birthday to her today** I initially, years ago, wanted to take this job on not because I was interested in coding, but because it is extremely difficult to find work outside the home with having a child's school schedule to juggle as a single-parent. Daycare's are not only expensive but I don't trust them at all, not even with bigger kids, so that is never an option. I don't have any family that could assist with my child. And my daughter's father is in her life but work's overseas with the military, so I don't have him here to help with her. So I needed to find a job that allows me to work at home when she has her 2 week, 1 week, 2 month vacations, sow days etc, out of school. So I thought to do Medical Coding. I figured it would help me make decent money, let me help others the way I like to help people all the time, take care of my daughter, and be proud of myself to have this wonderful employment I could fall back on if I ever was not able to accomplish my goals with the company I want to start. ----- But hearing all of this information and thinking about my habits of getting distracted and not being able to retain loads of information that well, make me more than nervous and even more doubtful about myself. I just keep seeing people say how much work it is and they say it with a sign of warning in their voice as to almost caution you from being able to do this type of work. It seems to be a job for perfectionists and high achieving individuals. I think maybe that last statement should be said to newcomers interested in this. I have an instructor who wants us to answer questions about becoming a Medical Coder before she sends us our textbooks. Now I see why. I hope I don't get dropped from her class but if I do, I understand why. I appreciate all the time and effort you have put into your videos Victoria. They are VERY helpful just like everyone has said. Thank you again. - Take care and good luck on everything.

I'm glad I found this as well. Thank you for your videos! I'm coming from a long career in massage and bodywork dotted with some years managing PT offices/submitting treatment codes to insurance/using an encoder. Hyper aware of the yearly changes! Studied diagnosis codes from dating a lazy psychotherapist who I typed all treatment notes for...I received clinical medical training in high school (in the 90s) including terminology, etc. All I need is a quick *review* of Anatomy/Physiology and Medical Terminology (textbooks I already own), then some ICD-10-CPT-HCPCS coding courses and I could probaby pass the CPC exam easily. Interpreting case notes isn't hard for me. Nor is being a manager in a medical setting. :-) Thanks again!

My gf nudged me into getting started with medical coding during the pandemic. I was laid off, so I used and have been using the extra time to getting a huge head start. It’s a lot of fun, and I hope I can eventually make a new career out of it. You recently put out the e&m coding tips and when I first started working with that area your vids weren’t out, yet. So I am glad you have uploaded them. Maybe at some point you could make some vids wherein you go through e&m scenarios? I know it’s one of the most difficult areas of the coding job

Ahhh!! How fabulous this video is!! I’m super excited that you went all out in detail of the possibilities of what could go down in a work day 💕 I’m graduating from my AAS program in September and am completing the CPC exam through AAPC in the winter. I’m enjoying my classes but I just don’t feel like I’m getting enough “real world” insight, which I feel is super important when preparing myself mentally, for anything really lol. Thank you! Also, if you find the time would you mind explaining how you may query a physician on a document you feel does not provide enough information? I haven’t had this explained in my classes so far. Love your videos! Tina

Yeah it's hard to get a feel for the day since you can't just drop in for shadowing because of HIPAA and not actually being able to show a live EMR or work queue. I tried to capture all the different stuff that goes on in a day and it's great to hear it was helpful! Let's see, as far a query here's something I used to commonly send to my providers via email when they would miss things like lesions sizes. Subject: Coding Addendum Request : MRN 12345678 Dr. X: I'm reviewing the case for {patient name} MRN 12345678 for date of service 8/2/2019. It states the lesion size is 2.0 cm but does not provide a length of the closure. Please review and complete an addendum clarifying the total length of the closure for the lesion removal. Thank you! Victoria The inpatient query process is waaaay more sophisticated. They typically have a much better process built into the system. I admire how brilliant some of those inpatient coders are -- their clinical knowledge is amazing.

Love your videos. I am trying to pass my CPC exam this will be my last chance to take the test and pass it. I want to strengthen my skills. I took time out to get my bachelor's degree in Supervision and Management. But I need to work from home for now because of my elderly mother, I cannot leave her home alone so going out to work as an Office Manager is not a choice. Any suggestion that you would give me regarding the test so I can pass it. I have been in the medical field for over 30 years and I have done every position you can think of. I have done medical coding and billing when it was ICD9, the posting, coding, collection so I need to get back into the ICD10. Any suggestion that you might have to sharpen my skills and bring myself up to date, I would appreciate it. Thank you for your videos.

@ContempoCoding
@ContempoCoding 3 года назад
You can just get a certification. Keep in mind, if you don't already have medical terminology and anatomy under your belt, those are needed in order to understand medical coding. Ideally I think a diploma program through a local community college or tech school is best, but you can also go directly through the AAPC.

Miss Victoria, If possible could you give a thumbnail guesstimate of the number of productive hours you would expect to put in per remote day (eliminating "Dance time" and "Interrupt times" (for various misc reasons)! And to make things quantitatively complete, a SWAG (that's a Scientific Wild A** Guess) on the number of completed patient files are done during the fore mentioned time spent. Please note that I am not yet even employed as a novice coder, but I do appreciate your approach to your craft and your methods in trying to satisfy your expected goals. I am watching more of your videos as well to learn more about it in general as well as doing research online. Are online courses for the classes decent or is a hands on class better from an employer perspective?

How do you maintain 95% accuracy in coding? I know what you mean so I work in Auditing and HCC coding. Auditing- things have already been coded but usually sent back for corrections like an investigation lol. HCC coding or Risk Adjustment deals with connecting a signal diagnosis for each encounter and if it's not there or a connection can not be made then we would have to query the provider. I know this comment was a while ago but spoke to me as a coder feeling the same thing many years ago.

@@nathaliaj2070 It really depends on your end goal. A masters in general psych may be too broad and not specialized enough for certain careers. If you find a specialized field you like you typically will need to go back to school to get certified. The masters can be a huge plus if you’re trying to do something like public speaking or if you want to go on to do your Phd. But after I did my masters in psych I discovered I liked working in ABA. I only needed a bachelors for the position I held in that field. However, to become a BCBA I would be a good candidate because I would only need to do 1 year of schooling bc I already had a masters. Long winded but it really depends.
