Im almost done getting my degree, and honestly its so scary I still feel like I have no idea what im doing , but your channel is definitely helping me to get a grip on things. I feel like there is just so much to remember, its almost overwhelming.
I'm with Brianne below. Already paid for my AAPC course. Finished Terminology and Anatomy. Just started my coding course last week and am supplementing my weekly studying with your videos. I got my degree in pharmacy and was in retail for 20+ years and, well, am now getting into coding! Thank you for your great content! I've been making my way through your Guidelines series but figured I'd watch this one in between.
K C - I am looking at doing this as well... did you get a job already since this was a year ago? I am just now starting to sign up for Medical Terminology and then anatomy or visa -versa and then the coding course.
I'm currently working through my AAPC course right now and have been struggling a lot. I'm so glad I found your videos! They're such a huge help as I've been going through my course! Thank you!
I've never been the type of user to comment on a video. Heck, it took me a minute to find the section to leave a comment. I've been watching your videos as I try to determine which direction to take in the healthcare field and I have to say thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! You have helped me understand so much and I couldn't be more grateful! THANK-YOU!👏
Been watching your videos for a couple weeks and I just recently scheduled my CPC exam for November. I love your videos. They are so informative. As you were talking about the different books I was wondering, how do you know rather to use a CPT code or HCPCS code?
I am so excited to have found your youtube channel! I'm in the Stroudsburg PA area and just registered for my first classes in medical billing and coding at Northampton CC love all the great info for us new to the coding world - thank you!
Really enjoying your videos, thank you. I'm currently living outside the US but plan to move in the future (my husband is a citizen), do you know if I could do my AAPC training while in another country? Thanks!
Hello I just wanna start of by saying that I love your videos . Ive been wanting to get into this field for years I just haven’t made my mind up and also I want pick the right school . I’m currently looking into start my medical billing and coding program with sjvc . What do you think about that school ?
So I do a program for medical coding and get a certificate and knowledge n then go to AACP become a member take the exam to get credentials and then pay every year to keep the credentials and do CEU I just wanna make sure im following the information correctly
@@ContempoCoding great! Thank you! I was wondering if there was another way to connect with you to ask additional questions some time? About niche, foot in the door jobs, etc?
Hello Victoria. I really enjoy your channel. Is this fiend super difficult to get into? Is it very difficult to pass the certification exams? I don’t want to take the course with Preppy and then not be able to pass the exams. Thank you!
Difficulty level is a tough thing to gauge because everyone comes with so many different backgrounds and willingness to learn. I wouldn't say it's easy, but it's certainly worth investing into for yourself and your future.
I left nursing school about a year ago and I'm so lost on what to do career-wise. I'm going back to school soon and I'm wondering what program you think would be best: Medical Information Coder/Biller CCC (College Credit Certificate) or Health Information Technology AS (Associates in Science). I would prefer to get my associates in science as it would look good on my resume, but the CCC program is more affordable for me. Also the CCC program is AHIMA PCAP accredited and the AS program is CAHIM accredited and graduates are eligible to apply and take the national certification exam for RHIA and RHIT. I'm not sure what would be best so some guidance would help a ton!
Hi Victoria. I'm a registered nurse with a background in utilization management and case management. I am definitely an introvert who LOVES analyzing records and isn't a fan of direct patient interaction. I work well with providers and communicate well. Providers love me. Also enjoy advocating for patients, but do not love to interact with them on a regular basis. Looking into coding as a career for my last 10 years of my career before retirement. What are your thoughts on transitioning from nursing to coding? I know the pay is considerably less, but I'm willing to accept that to work autonomously behind the scenes. Please let me know if you think coding would be a good fit for me. Thank you!
Hi! I studied Medical Records and I got a CBCS from NHA but it seems that employees do not hire people with that certification….would I need to get it from AHIMA? Or another organization? I’m seeking job right now something that gets my feet wet into coding….I really like your videos hopefully you respond to my message and thank you!
Yes you need the AHIMA. I have the same certifications as yourself. Various job interviews and that's what they were looking for. She spoke about this in her video. Don't give up.
I just found your channel. I've been in the medical field for years but had to leave to care for aging parents. I'm considering remote medical billing and coding career. My question is if am able to find a remote job what are the percentages of companies requiring a covid vaccine to work remotely?
No degree needed. Medical coding and billing degree helpful. AAPC membership is $190 a year every year plus the examination fee to get certified is $299-$399.
Hi! Ty for the video very informative… I have a question.. Do you know about Dental coding? Is that the same as Medical coder and is recommended to take the CPC certification? Ty for your answer
Hi Victoria, I am a CPC-A. Very difficult to find a job with no experience. I am trying a trainee opportunity to get into it. My question is : “Can I plan my own hours as a coder if I become a remote worker? “ I have kids so I was hoping I can work through the night or weekends? Please let me know your thoughts
So I commented on another video about working at a wound care center and submitting icd10 and charges for our physicians... You made me realize that i am working as a specialist 😅 it's very basic because the doctors have already assigned the diagnosis, BUT my job is to make sure that the charges match what the procedure codes say.. we used to get daily emails and calls from revenue cycle because they kept getting denials but now that rarely ever happens because I am the only person selecting the icd10 and charges... I guess I am doing something right 🤣. But I should be getting paid more for all my work
How long it's take to get degree in medical coding / else certification alone is enough with my nursing degree based on ur recommendations I will take the course
Hello: I am a RN and have worked in utilization management, case management, and disease management mostly in insurance companies for 15-16 years). I have worked with metrics, remotely and I am very familiar with A&P, medical terminology, CPT, HCPCS and ICD 10 codes. The job market for remote positions for RNs is getting very limited since COVID. However I am seeing a few more Billing and Medical Coding professionals. I am currently unemployed and I need to know what I can do to apply to a program and what does the certification exam cost? Thank you. Debra
I am taking a self paced certificate program for medical billing and coding through a local university and am finding it quite overwhelming all of the information and trying to learn it all myself with very little instructions. Any helpful tips would be apprecaited
@@ContempoCoding Yes, money is a concern. And truth be told, I was not sure if the AAPC school counselor was just up-selling me with additional courses and pushing back my timeline, so I would be very interested in the alternative sources that you referred to... What do you suggest?
I actually passed my CCA exam 5 or 6 years ago, but I never was able to find a job. I'm currently working for a hospital obtaining authorizations for OP advanced imaging exams. Are there any programs that you recommend where I can refresh my memory to possibly take another certification exam?
Hello, I would like your advice. I took a medical coding and billing course for 2 semester about 5 years ago. I never took the certification test and now I'm thinking about getting my Medical coding certification. What you do recommended I do to be able to sit in for the test? What kind of materials do you recommend I look at or study from? I've done ICD-10 coding before I just have not done the other codlings.
Hello Victoria, I sent an email via the Contempo Coding website but haven't heard back yet. I have a question for you! I am an LPN. I also just completed my A.S. degree (emphasis in pre-dietetics). I am VERY interested in taking your CRC course and earning this credential. Given my Nursing License and A.S. degree-- I wanted to know your thoughts. If I were to earn the CRC cert, without the CPC, given my other credentials do you feel I would be likely to find a job? What are your thoughts on this? Are the chances of this VERY low? Or possible? Please share your thoughts, I could use a bit of guidance here.
Seems to be a lot of comments about inability to find a job once certified. It's odd as this doesn't sound like a particularly easy job but I've seen many people ask but you aren't replying. I'll check the job search video and see if you address this.
watched your video to get some more information . My community college is offering this class however it is a NHA certificate. Is that a good type of certificate ? Would I have any issue ?what is your opinion?
I've already completed and have my certification in Medical billing and coding course through a tech college, my problem is I didn't find a job in the field got discouraged and switched fields, now I want to put my certification to use. What would be your recommendations for starting over?
Absolutely! I used to teach at a technical school and occasionally would have a student "skip" internship and it typically didn't work out in their favor.

Are there any free classes online where I can get training for free?. I am not working currently and I am so excited to work with Medical code , since I worked with medical code in my country.
Hey there! 🌟 I totally understand your enthusiasm for diving into medical coding, especially with your background. However, it's important to note that fully free learning resources for medical coding are quite limited. This is largely due to copyright fees associated with the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code set. While there are some resources and introductory materials available, the comprehensive study required for proficiency in medical coding typically involves purchasing books, which can cost around $300. Moreover, most employers in the field prefer to hire certified coders. Achieving certification involves membership fees of about $200 and an exam fee of approximately $500. It's an investment in your future career, but it's worth considering these costs as you plan your journey into medical coding. Keep your passion alive, and maybe explore some budget-friendly options or financial aid that could help you get started!
Hello. Thank you for the video:). I am going to be going back to school to become a medical coder. I was curious about what different specialties can a coder work in ? Anything helps I am trying to go back to school while with a new baby
It sounds good but I am concerned about finding a job and then not being automated out to computers. I worked as an RN for over 25years in skilled long-term care and on psych units. Any ideas for me would be appreciated. I would like to work in a clinic like the health department and similar settings. I am going to take an online 4 month coding class at a local community college which prepares me to take that CPC exam. The wages aren't as important to me as the work environment. I will get billing training as well.
Hi! Excuse me Can you tell me that could person start study for coding with zero background education? I want start classes but Im not sure can I do this without any background education.
I have a question I hope you can help me with. I am currently working on a BS in Health Information Management. My plan is to get certified after I graduate so I have both on my resume’ . Do you think it will be at all beneficial to have a four year degree if my plan/hope is to be a work at home coder? I am hoping it will help my chances of getting a job especially with out experience but as much as I would like to earn a bachelors degree if it wont help my job opportunities or income potential maybe I shouldn’t spend the money for it? Thank you 😊
I think a bachelors is not necessary for a work from home coding job. Most people just need the coding credential, so a lot of people just get training from a technical school or directly from AAPC. A bachelor's is only needed if you want to get into a manager role or above.
According to the website I should have a GED degree or high school completed. I'm not in USA but I will in a couple of years with a resident status. I'm from Dominican Republic and I got a bachelors degree here. I've been working in a call center for almost 6 years for Radnet imaging center-california and I'm very familiar with cpt codes, icd codes, insurance carrier codes etc. I want to go through this info deeper because I want to prepare myself when I'm there and avoid wasting time struggling just looking for info. What can you do to help me? Please 🙏
I'm researching about billing and coding because this was a career advertised as a good choice for working from home with children.. So should I not waste my time or money? I'm expecting my 3rd child in september and we need more income but we don't qualify for child care assistance so child care is out of the question I cannot find an option that will cover the costs. I can't find an actual work from home career that will turn any profit and put at least one of my children in daycare. Is this a bad idea too then for what I'm trying to accomplish? Are there any stay at home moms out there that are doing this successfully?
I am looking into going to get my degree but I have a question. I have one community college that has credited courses, I have a state university that has the program but it’s non credited courses. Which is better to take? Thank you
AAPC doesn't have an "accreditation" they just have approved instructors that will allow you to take time off your apprenticeship by using their curriculum for the CPC program. You would look for them to state they are approved by the AAPC or can call the AAPC and ask. AHIMA has certain approved schools for some of their credentials -- mostly in health information. You can verify here: www.cahiim.org/programs/program-directory
Hi there! I just checked and the subtitle option is activated, however RU-vid has not provided the subtitles for this particular video through their auto caption service. I will look into alternative ways to add them manually.
I just found your videos. I’ve been a nurse for 7.5 years, but I’m really interested in this! How difficult do you think the switch would be with a nursing degree? 💜
I'm a nurse and the actual certification was an easy transition. But I've been applying for jobs for 6 wks now and get immediate not interested in every job I apply for. I thought being a nurse would help me get a job but this is proving to be a futile career change. I've even applied at hospitals I've worked at. I chatted with a nurse on the aapc site and she said it's been a year she's been certified and still no job
@@JoJo-vf7lb Congrats. Any tips on how to find a job? We would all appreciate it. And approx. how long did it take you to find a job. Any website you used to find jobs?
@@marisol033 I searched for jobs several times a week and applied and applied and applied. I used indeed and it took about two months to get my first interview which unfortunately the job was taken by someone already in the hospital system. I just started with change healthcare. This year they started an apprentice program so they take cpc-a. I'm only two days into the job but so far my managers have been wonderful.
It really does depend on preference. But if you go online, I would suggest looking for somewhere that least has a weekly live or virtual office hours so you can ask questions.
Hello, I’m so interested in medical coding. Your videos are so helpful and thank you for sharing so much! Have a few questions for you , hope it’s ok, maybe a little long winded. I’m currently working for a health insurance company in a different department then medical coding and want to apply out once I have my CPT. I’ve had A&P & Medical terminology thru the years and enjoy it, would of course need a refresher and I’m trying to learn the medical coding at this point. I’m ADD and could use some guidance what the best course of action would be? Do you have a course I can take thru a membership account? Did I hear that correctly? I’ve been watching the videos of yours and I maybe doing something wrong because I can’t find from Beginning (CPT & ICD - 10 - CM 2020) to the end. Would appreciate any assistance you could provide? Thanks Casper
Hello. My question about this career isn't answered yet with all of the RU-vidr who is into this career. Does all of the coder and billers are inter related with the insurance?
Hey, I doubt you'll see this, but I'm currently in school for this and they told me I will be getting certified at NCCT. Would you know if I should certified elsewhere?
@@davidwilder2790 I just got My CPC-A as well and have been applying for weeks and have not even received a phone call. I have probably applied to over 200 places. It’s very discouraging and I don’t understand how we are supposed to gain experience if not given the opportunity! Wish you all the best.
I’m currently getting my MHA in finance and started my first few classes for both billing and coding...does having a masters degree increase income? Thanks! :)
If I got my BLS and CPC-A would I be more likely to get an entry level medical administrative position that would then leading to a higher paying coding job?
I was looking at doing medical coding classes however looking for jobs they all require minimum 2 year experience! How would you recommend getting a job starting out?
You don't need to have worked in healthcare but you DO need to learn medical terminology and anatomy and physiology before taking your medical coding certification exam.
You need to be an AAPC member to sit for the exam. Membership is $190 annually. The exam is $299 online or $399 in person. The books required to take the exam are around $300-$400. The cost of training varies.

I haven’t yet applied for schooling on medical coding but as you mentioned, the scary part is how employers desire coders with 2-3 years of experience already. I’ve looked through jobs near me and the lowest I’ve seen is for 1 year of experience coding 😫
I'm just now looking into this as a job but on the AAPC site they state that if you choose the teacher led program, and complete the 80hrs work required, it will count as 1yr experience.
