Kazu had a robust private practice before a test cutting competition with Shogo. While reviewing the basics, we also try out more complex techniques. Please take a look at the scenes of our practice of tameshigiri mat cutting of katana.

A small suggestion for aiming above the toothpick, is don’t look at the target on the mat, focus on something far away behind the actual target.

It's kinda amazing to me how different both of your postures look to me, which I think speaks to the amount of experience respective to both of you. Kazu who is fairly new to it is focused more on the function and remembering everything he has to do, whereas for Shogo a lot of it has probably become habit/automatic to the point that he does these thing little... almost flairs or embellishments to his movements, not enough to be distracting or get in the way of the function of the movements, but enough to make it look (and probably feel) more pleasing/cool. You can definitely see it in the side-by-side, and as an artist it's just really cool to notice those. And I look forward to seeing how Kazu relaxes into the art and how he'll look as a seasoned katana wielder! Also, maybe this might help, or maybe not, but I noticed when you were both practicing the left kisa, Shogo widens his stance and bends his knees to get closer to a more straight on view of where he's cutting making it so he has to move his torso as little as possible, while Kazu seemed to bend at the waist, which then changes the cut in a very subtle way- or even if it doesn't change the cut, because it changes his view of the cut it might make some psychological adjustments that lead to physical adjustments without meaning to. Perhaps that has something to do with it?

Thanks for the lesson Shogo, I used to do the same thing but now I just practice the buying of tatami mats got a little expensive and my family needed me more and I put my practice on hold for awhile but you brought me back some memories Shogo again thanks for the lesson. Now I had no teacher just by reading books and watching some movies, no internet back then haha😂

I might suggest a remedy for failed cuts, and haunting images in the mind: swing in the dark. At night time when you *are absolutely positive NOBODY WILL COME NEAR YOU* for obvious reasons. I've had an issue in failing before, and thinking "will I do it right?" I hesitated, then tried to make up for the hesitation with force. As we see here, that doesn't work. One night I decided "I'm just gonna try again. Right now." There was almost no light, but I can see quite well in low light. I took a few swings, felt like I did okay and went to bed. Looking at the cuts in daylight the next day, they were nearly flawless. A huge jump from constant failures. Again do not consider attempting this unless you are absolutely 100% certain you will not harm yourself or others. Katana are not toys.

I do wonder something.. Given that the sharpness of the katana can be a key factor in how well a person does in the competition. Do competitors bring their own katana, that could vary in sharpness, or are katanas provided at the competition?

Your cutting skills are truly masterful shogo! I would love to learn all of your secrets one day. In HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), we cut these tatami matts in competition as well, but with european longswords in a specific series of cuts made special for each competition, some with the forward edge of the longsword, some with the back edge, from different guards and angles. This requires the practitioner to be masterful with all possible cuts at all heights to excel.

If anyone’s wondering why Kazu’s sword or rather koshirae looks different, its’s because it’s a kai gunto (ww2 naval sword). It is kind of unique as it has only 1 “hanger” rather than 2 on the saya which most others have.

Hi Shogo. As a visitor coming to Japan in June, where can one test cut tameshigiri? Obviously I'm not coming into the country with my own shinken, and buying a nihonto is not economically feasible at this time. I do have some cutting experience as I have Dan rank in Mugai-ryū Iai Hyōdō, but not a ton. This will be my first trip to Japan. Thanks!

This is the mat's second life. These aren't for the sole purpose of training. These are used/worn out tatami mats from the floor. They're essentially trash already. They likely got these as donations, or they're old mats from Shogo's house. They're likely going to be recycled again as kindling but there isn't usually more for the mats than this. Just the regular trash bin.
