I graduated H.S. In 1967. I lost my cousin in Spring of '68. I wrote to several young men and my parents helped me to put together a box of food with regularity to send to our guys. I know my Dad loved that part, he was ARMY--Battle of the Bulge, and knew what it meant to get a Package. We did the same for my Grandson M.P. In the Army Reserves😊🇺🇸♥️😊🇺🇸♥️😊🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸😊♥️🇺🇸😊♥️🇺🇸😊👍🏻

I deployed with the 173rd Airborne in support of OEF. Some people talk about a "greatest generation" but I don't subscribe to that concept. We of course very much admire and respect our honored predecessors. But while wars and technology change, the basic DNA of the American fighting man is untouched. If the guys I served with were born in some earlier time you would find them in places like Valley Forge, Antietam, Bastogne, or the A Shau Valley. America has always put its best forward when the going gets tough. We get the job done, we always keep up OUR end of the bargain. If our civilian leadership proves too incompetent to exploit our hard work and sacrifice then that's on them. It's no stain on our honor.

All these Vietnam videos are basically BS. These veterans willingly chose to go to an unwinnable, illegal war. If they say otherwise they are promoting a falsehood. A lot of these people push the image that they could or did win the war, but the "politicians" and the "people back home" lost it. Vietnam was a national American disgrace, tragedy and defeat...and they share in the responsibility of it. The politicians and American people saw that the war was not being won, or was unwinnable. The US never really had the "hearts and minds" of the South Vietnamese people...who they supposedly were fighting for. They don't talk much about the war crimes they committed against the Vietnamese....OR even against their own personnel. Lastly, whether these guys won or lost...the Vietnam war had absolutely NO effect on American freedom, security, safety or way of life. They did NOT sacrifice anything for my...or your freedom. These veterans present themselves as victims and wrongly treated. They are big boys and went to a country to kill or be killed. They shared in the failure. Now they want to be recognized for their "sacrifice" through videos, Honor Flights, endless trips to the Wall in DC or to Vietnam itself. They never grew up and really moved on. They have made themselves an embarrassment to themselves and my generation. Show quoted text

The propaganda companies, uhh I mean the media companies, are still at it today. The real communists in the banks and government’s mission was to make everything the American public believe to be false. At that point they would announce their victory. Something tells me that they are pretty close. Thank you for your service. I know that the soldiers had their hearts in the right place. I’m sorry that our government used and abused you guys like they did. Remember that God loves you and I do too, Brother!

We off-loaded Marines and ammo in DaNang, spent several weeks as a barracks ship for the ATC Riverboats in Vung Tau, and sailed up the Saigon River to Saigon to pick up 1500 Thai Queen Cobra troops and transport them to Bangkok. Upon arrival in Bangkok, the locals treated us like royalty for bringing home their troops. CWO4 USN Ret.

Even as early as 1966 critics of the 'Search and Destroy' policy maintained that there should have been more 'Claim and Hold' operations, i.e. driving the Vietcong out of areas then keeping troops there to stop them returning. Instead of the US troops having to fight over and over again for areas they had already cleared before, but had left, allowing the VC to return, many said that the stationing of units in cleared areas to defend the Vietnamese villages from VC incursions would have been more effective and would have helped winning the hearts and minds of the population. As we however know, nobody listened.

I was there in 1967 in DaNang with 7th Engr Bn. USMC. This film was obviously a propaganda project with staged scenes but it still shows some of what the conditions were like. Few if any of us were in favor of being there or knew what our basic mission was supposed to be. The resentment I still feel towards the war protest wasn't because they were protesting but because they blamed us for it. and by the way...you can't exactly lose a war that didn't define victory well enough to actually accomplish it.

@@ericluk68 Vietnam didn't need us to stop communism; they could've done it themselves. Again, Vietnam didn't have to be communist. It could've been independent and democratic without a war we had helped them become independent right after WW2 then the whole Vietnam war would've been avoided. You see, at the end of WWII Ho Chi Minh came to Truman and asked for his support in seeking Vietnamese independence from the French, and Truman basically brushed him off to support the French in their occupation! And it’s not like Ho Chi Minh just played Truman one visit and then went to Moscow! No, he really respected America and in fact he modeled the Vietnamese declaration of independence directly on the American one, so he sent Truman numerous letters, which Truman chose to ignore in favor of supporting the French! Ok, France was our friend and all who backed our bid for independence, I get that, but France was wrong on this! And we as a self-proclaimed champion of freedom and justice were morally obligated to support the Vietnamese in their quest for independence and freedom! But it gets worse than all that. We turned our backs on the morally correct until Ho Chi Minh got support from the soviets! Then we decided to get involved on the premise that if South Vietnam fell to communism, then all of southeast Asia would follow! But as you can see, after we left and all of Vietnam became communist, that did not happen! So basically 58,000 Americans and several million Vietnamese died for nothing! To me that makes it the worse war! And I can’t help wondering how different Vietnam would be right now if America under Truman had done the morally correct thing! Also, many South Vietnamese felt they could've fought the war themselves without U.S. interference. Now I'm no fan of communism but it's none of our business whether Vietnam is communist or not. Besides, the South Vietnamese felt that they could fight the war themselves without American interference. All they needed was supplies and moral support, nothing more. As one former South Vietnamese officer stated, " We fought for our country with our best,” Vo said. “We didn’t need the Americans to do our job for us. We didn’t need the American GIs to come and fight for us. We needed money, supplies and international support.” And here's my source. www.mercurynews.com/2017/09/29/veterans-angry-disappointed-following-pbs-vietnam-war-documentary/

The 1945-46 War in Vietnam, codenamed Operation Masterdom by the British, and also known as the Southern Resistance War (Vietnamese: Nam Bộ kháng chiến) by the Vietnamese, was a post-World War II armed conflict involving a largely British-Indian and French task force and Japanese troops from the Southern Expeditionary Army Group, versus the Vietnamese communist movement, the Viet Minh, for control of the southern half of the country, after the unconditional Japanese surrender. Western countries recognise three Indochina Wars: the first being France's unsuccessful eight-year conflict with the Viet Minh nationalist forces (1946-1954); the second being the war for control of South Vietnam, featuring an unsuccessful American-led intervention, ending in 1975; finally, the conflict in Cambodia, sparked by the Vietnamese invasion in 1978. This numbering overlooks the brief but significant initial conflict - from 1945 to 1946 - that grew out of the British occupation force landing at Saigon to receive the surrender of Japanese forces. The Viet Minh were defeated by the combined British/French/Japanese force, and southern control of Vietnam was reasserted by the French colonial empire, leading to the First Indochina War.

They don't. Maybe on large missions, but definitely not all the time. They can't possibly support every single mission and every single unit on the ground. They also have to prioritize every support mission AND get approval from Higher. I'll tell you from first hand experience in Iraq and Afghanistan that there simply aren't enough aircraft to support everyone. So while you may think that just because aircraft is in the air, by no means does it mean they're available to help the majority of troops on the ground. We called for CAS on several occasions and couldn't get any. And yes....a lot of times when you do call for CAS they'll scramble the closest available aircraft to assist if they get approval and have any available. Its not a guarantee. USMC Infantry 1996-2020

That why millions of people moved from the north to the south after 1954, although the north government had tried to keep thier people back by many ways. 10 millions of people on the North đie or lost, according to one of thier leader, but they never give up the war, to them victory is more important than life of thier people.

@@KhaiNguyen-vr8ce If it's just for fear of death, say like you, the world doesn't need war. Do you think the US came to help Vietnam fight against communism? Do you know where Vietnam came from? That is from oppression and slavery of the French colonial regime, only the communist road can liberate the people and liberate the people. Ho Chi Minh had also asked the French to recognize the Vietnamese government as a state, accepting some losses to be a state in the French union, but France wanted to rule Vietnam as a slave colony. and when France loses, the US is a capitalist ideology like the French that thinks that it will impose a new colonial regime that wants to divide Vietnam like Korea to exert influence in Southeast Asia. but the US failed. Do you think the US helps Vietnam? Do you ever bring your money to your neighbor's house? if you don't benefit from it, your argument is ridiculous. In 1954 nearly 1 million people migrated to the South according to the call of God, most of them following God and working for France. You should remember that the northern government is not trying to keep these people. if they wanted to keep them from having no door to go, they would run away because of the French involvement. Another thing you say the North died 10 million people from where do you get the data? have any evidence? the data that you have is very vague and does not know anything about the history and formation of the current state of Vietnam. You should remember that if the US or France or China intervenes, Vietnam will be divided forever. you should study world history again. And let me ask you are someone from overseas? and an employee? Do you have national dignity?

@@longdangphi7765 You know nothing about history, I think you are a real product of communism schools. I understand because I used to be like you, admire Ho chi minh and Communist party when I was a student! But now I know that all of that are bull shit! 1. You said that US want to devide VN like Korea. No VN was devided by Geneve agreement. 2. You said ”only the communist road can liberate the people and liberate the people” haha. Most cuntries in the world were colony of French, England, or Spain, but they didn’t need Communist road to liberate the people even a battle with too many people died. However, Vietnam chose the most extreme and stupid way, that is communist. 3. You said “Do you think the US helps Vietnam? Do you ever bring your money to your neighbor's house?” so answer me, why Soviet and China help Communist party? You never have a friend so you never help anybody without profit, I know haha. Poor you! Of course the main reason the US came is to find an ally to fight back communist. What will happen when communist spread out? No Market, no business, no private ownership! Do you want to live in that country?? All your asset will belong to Government. Do you want that life? 4. “In 1954 nearly 1 million people migrated to the South according to the call of God, most of them following God and working for France” there are not only Christans there are also Buddists. I have a question to you! Do you agree to leave your house your land, your ownership to go after God? To pass through a lot of danger and death to come to the south? It is not a short distance it is hundred of kms on foot, cuz there is no motor, bike or even a shoe and FOOD! I will say NO if my homeland is good enough!. In fact they don’t know any things about Geneve agreement, as you know, people in the north was reall poor they have no radio, tv, and free newspaper! How did they get information? Only through government! And u belive that the Gov would say the truth that they were allowed to freely btw to sides? Ultill When Mr. Ngo Dinh Diem came to the north to say the truth, people began to move, because no one told them that info before! If they knew sooner, there was not only more than 1 million. After that people move a lot but the gov don’t let them go and call them TRAITOR. That was really dangerous cuz they could be killed anytime! In that moment, world commission had been found to help people to move to the south, from that moment everything seem to better a little, becouse the north Gov still make a lot of tactics to keep them back. No matter what occurred, they tried their best to go, cuz they know that communist is evil, liars, dictators 5. As you can see my English is not so good, I still live in VN and do my busines here, so most of us know the bad of communist!. I love the country, when there is no dictators and communist! If yes, division is the best like north and south Korea. You want no rich and poor, no private ownership, no market, go to the north, otherwise go to the south, where have no dictator, free newspaper, transparent information, and fair competition! Thanks

@@sargintrock2538 Yes those who fled to Canada were the real heroes. Vietnam didn't need us to stop communism; they could've done it themselves. By 1967 the US forces had lost the Vietnam War. By then they were sending over National Guard units and 18 year olds who had not started shaving yet. We Australians were only there because as Special Forces we wanted to be there. US patrols went out with half of them stoned and the other half scared shitless. They walked down tracks or along creeks and were slaughtered because the didn't know better. They built forts on the top of hills like it was the wild west and Fort Laramie against the Indians. The VC and NVA just skirted them and carried on. By 1968 every province was under VC control and half of US kit was being sold to the VC on the black market. It was the most pathetic effort of soldiering we ever saw. We had been there since 1963 and operated out of Cambodia. There were 100 of us and we did more damage to the VC and NVA than 800,000 US soldiers did in ten years. The US should hang its head in shame for the 60,000 who died and 200,000 who were maimed and wounded. And for what? Vietnam is now second only to Thailand in prosperity in SE Asia.

@@bobbertee5945 I hope you do know 99% of the Vietnam war is now declassified. Once Vietnam was owned and a colony of France, after WW2 Vietnam, known then as French Indochina, wanted independence from France much like the colonies in the Americas wanted independence from Britten. The Viet Minh was formed and started a revolution to kick France out of Vietnam. in 1954 the Viet Minh won that victory at Điện Biên Phủ and temporary independence as Vietnam. Two leaders emerged from that war, Ho Chi Minh in Hanoi and Diem in Saigon, so the country was divided until elections could be held. July of 1955 was supposed to be Vietnam's first election to choose a single leader over a unified Vietnam but polling showed the elections would have gone to Ho Chi Minh and they were called off. Elections were held in both north and south. A little side note on the Elections in the south, now declassified, we now know the Diem government faked the elections and US knew about it. The North did launch the first attack. My father in law was Viet Cong, and there was no forced military service as the video claimed. My father in law met my mother in law when he joined the Viet Cong, she was a teacher for the military and all those entering the fight had to be literate both reading and writing Vietnamese, that was a requirement. At the end if the US just let the elections happen Vietnam was have peacefully reunited under a Democratic Communist government, but we know the US had to meddle in a countries elections because they did not like the government the people chose. Now after the war it is true many mostly in the south were put in prison and even killed, I have heard first hand stories from men who were Viet Cong or NVA that seen and did some nasty stuff. At the end, most tell me all they wanted was an independent Vietnam, they had to first fight France, then fight America in two wars back to back. to make sure there would not be a 3rd war they killed any ranking officer or political member of the ROV, related families got prison but some also were executed. It was very unfortunate and many I have spoken to regretted it, but the people of Vietnam was tired of a war that spanned two generations. So yes, all Vietnam wanted was independence.
