A day of bikepacking and packrafting in Chile. To skip to the proper sections:
00:00:00 Bike setup, gear & quick review
00:19:08 A day of bikepacking and packrafting
00:44:26 Questions & Answers
Hello, this video is not part of the main series but rather an attempt to portray a typical day in of traveling in Chile. There is not much music (except for few little parts) and perhaps you can get a feel of what you can expect if you go biking in the remote regions of the Chilean Andes.
Apologies in advance for any small errors, i simply had a hard time watching the video to check it, as I just can't stand listening to myself talk...
The first section covers gear review and my bike setup, you can find complete gear list at:

for the Q&A part, the questions were collected from Facebook and Instagram and answered in this video. If you have a question that has not been answered in the video, you can post it below and I will do my best to answer it, and maybe add it to the next Q&A video.

I've commented to others on their affinity to 'adopting' pets on the road and they don't realize animals have lives of their own and sometimes, the want of a pet companion (according to local animal laws) can get them caged, quarrantined and unfortunately, euthanized. On tents; you are quite taller than I and i dont see how you were able to use a UL-1 with any comfort! That thing is basically a free standing bivy and so thin its more like a 2 season tent! (It is definitely light!) Good review. I use adjustable fastek straps and long tie downs for basic touring. Gotta try those rubber straps you use.

Iohan, you have inspired me in ways that National Geographic or others can not. Whatever you are in this Universe (or the next) I hope that you are having the time of your life. RIP "friend" (we never met but I backpacked over 3000 km between Argentina and Chile in Patagonia, later in Salta... and more...hitchhiking and adventures), you are a special human and wish I could have been your friend in real life and share some stories over a campfire (done safely) in El Bolson or El Chalten. Descanza en paz hermano, te quiero y extraño mucho. Tu vida, aventuras y cariño hacia los perros son verdaderos ejemplos de felicidad pura.

Hello from your neighbour, Turkey! I really like this video because I prefer to hear gravel, chain noise of bicycle, wind, birds other than songs. You should make more videos with no music. Or you can make 2 different versions (with music & without music). In my opinion, hearing ambient sounds makes me feel like I'm literally there. Thanks for your all efforts.

Somewhere as a joke I made a comment about your next journey to Antarctica after seeing you going through snow wind and ice because I have not seen more unusual and inspiring bike packer on youtube or during my little journies. Maybe there are, but I have not seen anyone who brings a boat with him on a bike - very practical solution to fulfill ambitions of travelling on a next level. Iohan, I wish you to fulfil your travelling plans. When a point comes in your life when you stop following the way of alchemist and get into permanent jobs, household or family maintenance, please know (humbly :) that you have fulfilled your mission 10x over what avarege person could achieve. Anyway, may you find the treasure at the end of your journey. Thank you for putting this experiences on youtube.

Might seem like a obvious question but do the gears skip even after tweaking the derailleur limit screws? And on the highest gear the wire should be pulled snug and then screwed down. Yeah might well just be the wear though, I use old 3 by 5s drive train as the teeth are much thicker. Can't notice them wearing down at all, old shimano 5 freewheels are my favourite as they were the first to have some simple index profiles but still thick teeth, that with non-index top thumb shifters so you have more direct control over the mechanism movement. I can pretty much avoid all chain spitting/skipping like that. I had to find a way to prevent all that, really bugged me every time it started happening. Tbh I am kind of talking out my ass when it comes to experience with this 'kind' of cycling though. A front mech would get in the way of the bags for one thing..
@IohanGueorguiev
@IohanGueorguiev 5 лет назад
@@leifcian4288 it is just old. almost 2 years and i have been rotating 2 chains every 1000km. Even with adjustment there is enough play in the derailleur so that from the 1st gear it can skip and getting the chain stuck between spokes & cassette is really bad. I kind of promised my wheel guy (chris) that i will bring him completely round derailleur pulleys and i am getting close.
@leifcian4288
@leifcian4288 5 лет назад
Shouldn't be too difficult to swap a pair of jockey wheels with a small adjustable spanner. Depends what derailleur your running of cause, I'm use to salvaging 20 year old stuff. I had to change a derailleur recently because it developed some play around first set of rivets but as its all good other than that I'm going to attempt to sure it up at some point when I have the right tools to redo those kind of rivets. Yeah the newer derailleurs with the little clutch do hickys it's a little tricky to get them running with non index shifters, onto the low gears (which is pulling the mech up onto 'low' gears) . Thing is non index shifters although it's tricky to change 'as' smoothly up or down, it's gives more direct control over the mech so as long as the limits are set neatly you don't have to worry about 'every' gear being 'aligned' so much as you just move the lever a little more up or down to work the chain neatly onto a gear. Not ideal in a race when you need to change up or down as soon as you need to, but more versatile for day to day use its better as it needs less constant fine tuning, and you can move directly from the top to bottom gear pretty instantly which is pretty handy for a town bike. I feel a little more connected to my bike as well, the derailleurs become more like an extension of my hand and I can feel how well the chain is sitting. But yeah anyway that's all by the by hope you can get a new cassette or derailleur soon. Be well man:)

I've used Thermorest for years but recently bought an Exped Downmat, which has a layer of down sewn in the top section, very warm even on cold wet grounds, used it on my Alaska trip where it rained most of the time. It has a built in hand pump which does not take up any room. Also I would recommend that you look into Marmot tents, I still have mine that's almost 20 years old now, and still holding up and pretty much still waterproof like the day I bought it. I have used it hiking the Grasslands of Saskatchewan and stood up to crazy winds, to getting snowed on during a hike through BC's Rockwall Trail, not to mention many backpacking and biking trips around Canada and the USA. A nice plus is that it has a couple of small acrylic type windows sewn into the rain fly, so you can easily check on what's going on outside without having to unzip the door. Also packs up small and is very lightweight. I really Enjoy your travelog and wish you many more safe miles. Cheers from Canada, Eh!

I know from a couple of the episodes that you do sometimes experience illness. Have you ever been injured while traveling? Have you seen a local doctor? How is the cost of that covered? Or do you just accept this as part of the risk of traveling? Wishing you well and more great adventure traveling!

Iohan the problem with your gears is most probably because you are letting the chain get too stretched without changing it. Once it passes a certain point it begins to wear into the gears. If you change the chain in time you will get much more life out of the cassette. There is a simple little tool you can check you chain with and weighs almost nothing. Once the stretch is .75 you should change the chain. If it gets over that it will destroy the gears.

Now I don't even ride bikes any longer, but I do still say "thank you" to people trying to assist others. Thank you! I learned something I didn't have any clue about, but now I and others do. Ok, now I want you to picture the decent handful of bikers you've saved from having hidden issues regarding worn out gears. Can you see their imaginary smiles?

that was my plan, if boat sinks, unhook front tire (easy to remove) and throw my red bag on top (important stuff, emergency blanket and two days of food) and swim to shore...
